That was a poor pen. His run up was way too straight, so he could barely shoot to the right, hence it was way inside the post and the keeper should have got it.

Why didn't Son take it, was he on the pitch?

If they do similarly well, they may well do that. But they don't have one of the biggest footballers in the world (and easily the countries biggest star) putting pressure on them.

The reason that Asian games get it but the Asian cup doesn't even though its an inferior football tournament is due to a backlash after the WC, they can't be seen giving football preference again.

I am told kpop and baseball have bigger stars than him and they were not given a way out, don't expect any favours.

Good point, i would imagine that becaus he is their biggest star he would be feeling under big pressure with the hopes of a nation resting on his shoulders. Some players thrive under that pressure but Sonny always comes across as a laid back guy so who knows.

Nope, certainly don’t know anything more, just from the other examaples in that article when talking about Park Ji-Sung and Ki, as well as talking with a Korean friend from work (hardly a notable source.) I completely respect the fact that they won’t let you off just because you’re a footballer, but at the same time it is unfair. A normal citizen’s career is much longer and 2 years out isn’t as big as 2 years in a 10-15 year football career.

I just feel (or perhaps hope) that if they get to the final, there may be a reduction or exemption. Let’s hope it’s a mute point after they win it.

As per wiki that is not a loophole but the rule and its gold for the Asian cup...(the football team were not given the exception on a whim from 2004 http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/english/doc/2004-09/02/content_371041.htm) , there was a big backlash after the WC and baseball in 2008 and they doubled down on the rules so unlikely to change again

Current conscription regulations stipulate that athletes who win medals in the Olympic Games or gold medals in the Asian Games are granted exemptions from military service and are placed in Grade 4. They are required to do four weeks of basic military training and engage in sports field for 42 months... In practice, after athletes finish their four weeks of basic military training, they are able to continue their own sports career during the 34 months of duty
