Last season’s results were

W 4 D 1 L 2

Same results this season gives us 70 points. 68 points has been enough to ensure 4th place in every season since the EPL went to 20 teams in 1995 I believe.

EDIT:

Our last 7 games last season W 3 D 2 L 2. Same again gives us 68 points.

potentially our games after mid week European football will be :

Everton, Southampton and Sunderland at home
Chelsea and Wigan away

firstly looking at the two games we know we have to play for certain after Euro football (Everton and Chelsea) we shouldn't be too worried about the effects on our players for the Everton game as we are at home in Europe prior to that game so there should be minimal interference in our preparation for the game and we can take comfort in the fact that Chelsea have to travel to Russia and play on an artificial pitch, potentially causing them more disruption than our trip to Switzerland (home and in bed the night of the game with any luck) in the other game.

should we advance to the semis, Southampton at home and Wigan away will be the two league games played after Euro ties, with Wigan being sandwiched in between two mid week games - potentially that is a fixture we could drop points in as a tight fixture list will take it's toll somewhere also taking in to account Wigans seemingly yearly end of season champions league form.

Stoke away several days before what could potentially be a European Cup final is another game to take in to account, don't think it's an ideal fixture to be playing what with their rough and ready reputation - im sure it's not beyond Pullis to play on the fact we (potentially) have a cup final a few days later and to try and scare us out of the game with some typically Stoke type football. would be worried about this game under these circumstances

Sunderland at home a week later will be impossible to call at this point but you'd like to think it's a game we'd have enough in our locker to win no matter the circumstances

*unless Chelsea beat United tomorrow and our match against them is rearranged*

:p

oh yeah, any ideas as to when that would be moved to?

think id prefer to play them on the current date, that trip to Russia is going to cause them problems i think

The Semi final would be on the weekend we play Chelsea.

No idea where a free midweek would be to replay that though.

I would agree. Plus they could be smarting. If we play them that weekend they will be out of the FA cup, and with any luck they could be out of the Europa as well, after a gruelling trip to Russia with extra time and a penalty heartache..

A man can dream right? :p

Couldn't find the run-in prediction thread so will put this in here.

Just did the BBC Predictor, came up with this:

1. Man Utd 97pts
2. City 83pts
3. Arsenal 72pts
4. Chelsea 72pts
5. Spurs 70pts
6. Everton 61pts

As always is the case with these, I was fairly generous to the teams around us and had us losing to both City and Chelsea, whilst drawing away to Stoke and winning the other games. Hopefully a couple of decent results our way with Chelsea and Woolwich, plus us getting our own results in the tough fixtures could mean we are in a strong position.

Of course, we have no clue what will happen over the coming weeks. I would love it if we got 6/7 points from our next three games.

Pretty similar to the one I did, had us 5th on GD. Have a bad feeling that GD is going to be our downfall, and it will be our luck that we will no doubt set the record for most points for a team finishing 5th

Had a bit of time on my hands this morning, so I've had a look at all the 20 Premier League tables since formation.
I ruled out the first three as they were played over 42 games.

Since the reduction to 38games in 1995/96

You need to look at the 5th place teams. Liverpool got 76 points in 2007-8 but Everton in 5th only got 65 points.
So Liverpool only needed 66 points to finish 4th.

I don't think any PL team has ever needed more than 70 pts for 4th? In which case this season looks likely to be a record high.

Which is funny considering most will comment on a percieved drop in quality this season around the top 4

I would be surprised if 70pts didn't get you top 4 but in a weaker league you'd need more points to finish higher than usual because the mid-table teams are easier to beat. Definitely an easier league this year than for a long time in England.

It won't happen this season either. The league never works like fans think it does. The reason ourselves, Chelsea and Arsenal are not fighting for the title is that we aren't good enough not to throw away silly points. All three of us will throw away silly points again before the season is out.
