Rule changes in football

I think I hate pretty much all of those

all for fixing handball though, nothing wrong with the rule imo, just the wild variations in how it's enforced

it does feel a little like an attack on defending generally though, time wasting is an art form, it's as much part of football as dribbling and scoring

Great more time for punditry and adverts. DO you think sky will drop their prices or clubs the season tickets by a third, only fair if the game is a third shorter.

How is it going to be shorter? Just because the stadium clock is stopped, doesn't mean that the time between stopping and starting the game just disappears! Effective playing time is on average under 30 minutes per half, so you'll actually get to see MORE football.

it's all "football", whether the ball is moving or not, defenders don't stop tracking when the ball is being collected for a throw, attackers don't stop looking for space to move into, the pauses aid the performance

I could actually see it make "time wasting" more effective, if the clock is being stopped anyway you can really slow things down, you're not killing the clock but you can kill opposition momentum and give your players longer recovery breaks

I quite like the idea of the clock. Additional time is a complete farce, would be nice to fix that.

Handball's need to be clearer too. Non of this intent stuff - what other foul requires intent? If you gain an advantage, or disadvantage the other time, it should be handball.

Why don't they wear helmets (would've saved Ryan) and body armour (Sonny). Why don't we have specialist teams (free-kick/penalty takers or a penalty keeper). Why don't we have time-outs (Arsenal are all forward in search of an equaliser in the dying minutes. Hugo claims the ball and rolls it out to Toby, who spots Harry on his own on the centre spot. Toby launches the perfect 40 yard ball to Harry who surges towards the empty goal at the South Stand. 17,000 Yids beckon Harry towards them and the victory confirming 6th Spurs goal of a 10 goal thriller. BUT...Wenger, yep he's still there, calls a time-out and play is called back for a drop ball in the centre circle after everybody has had a sip of their Carabao and pointed the label to the cameras as per contract. Meanwhile Paxton & his Missus have missed their last train back to Warrrington because, the one Saturday 3 o'clock kick of the season, has now dragged on until 11:30 pm). Works for me!

With ads sandwiched into the stoppages before long. It won't take long for Jose to find ways of delaying the game. This is all about ad revenue, nothing more, nothing less.

Football reforms: Scrapping 45-minute half to be debated at Ifab

A proposal to scrap 45-minute halves is to be looked at by football's lawmakers to deter time-wasting.

Instead, there could be two periods of 30 minutes with the clock stopped whenever the ball goes out of play.

Lawmaking body the International Football Association Board (Ifab) says matches only see about 60 minutes of "effective playing time" out of 90.
.

There is nothing new in this part, Back in the late 90's we did a paper on the amount of time the ball is actually in play and we got it to 58 mins per game. The paper was done to show players the importance of what they do " off the ball" is just as important as what they do on it. We cut it down that on a even game both sides would be in possession of the ball for about 29 mins, brake that down between the 11 players on a side it would work out at roughly just over 2 minutes each player. Now of course some would be in the game more then others but it showed the importance of what players when not in possession that they keep moving and effect the game.

I've mixed feelings about the clock idea. It would ensure that we saw a certain amount of football (probbaly a bit more), but it seems like following American sports for the sake of it. As the article points out, they also suggest a lot could be done within the current rules if the referee stopped the clock for more things.

Overall I don't object to any too strongly. They all seem to be done for a good reason. Another suggestion I heard mentioned in a radio report on the proposals is to allow players to receive medical attention while play goes on (i.e. to stop fake injuries delaying the game).

P.S. On handball, I'd like to see unintentional handball be an indirect free kick. Not as drastic as a penalty, but indirect free kicks in the area are fun.

The beauty of the game was always from top to bottom it was the same.

I ask myself if these rules were not proposed would you be sitting at home hating on the game and hoping that someone would come up with a rule to change the clock etc? I doubt it, the rules are not needed really and the changes we see are for change sake. Even this video ref thing got pulled apart.

There's not much wrong with the game as it is.

I would say little to nothing. A few nagging issues like cheating and moaning from managers for me, other than that I like the game as it is, I dont have the obsession to have it perfect in terms of decisions really and the game length is fine for me

Doesn't this come up every year? Are these not serious proposals for changes but discussion points.

I think a new rule should be if you need 5+ replays and those lines on the screen to find out if a guy is offside or not - the refs / lino's decision is good. Feck being outraged that his knee was slightly in front etc

Yeah, in the same way that maniacs running over people with cars and chopping down people is a failure of the police.

analogy doesn't match, it's only a game

and would the game really be better if everybody played it in the same way?

it's entertainment, it needs bad guys
