Ross Barkley

That's not what I said though

Yer right. you did not answer my first point which was the following. Or do you not have a opinion on that?

Fair point, but who is in the best position to judge what is a sustainable level, Levy or the fans who in all reality have no idea what we have or not have?

I do have an opinion on that and have already posted a lengthy reply which you totally misconstrued.

Poch, who I think you may agree, is in the best position to know what the squad needs, has said we need at least two or three (and maybe four) new signings before the window closes. He is the one who has our TEAM matters on the pitch at the forefront of his mind.

Let me put a contrary scenario. We spend no money. We don't invest in the team. Rose leaves. We don't have a great season. The team, which was on the cusp of great things, breaks up. Poch gets frustrated and leaves. Our key players leave. We have a new stadium and fantastic training facilities, but we don't have a team any more nor a top quality manager. We slide into a cycle of decay like Leeds.

I think the above scenario is just as likely if we don't invest in the squad now. No one is suggesting investing to the levels that are unsustainable. However, we must have banked at least £75 million from our sales and have freed up a lot of salary space from letting players go. If we buy 3 players at say £25million that isn't going to break the bank or put us in an unsustainable position going forward.

In any business, you need to invest to go forward. For those saying we are good enough with the existing squad. We simply aren't. Others have strengthened. We have come up short twice and we have a thinner squad now. We simply must buy some quality before the window ends.

I don't disagree with this at all.

I quote your message only because your first paragraph reminded me of something Dan Kilpatrick said on the Tottenham Way podcast this week. At one of the US press conferences when a question about transfers (in) was asked, Poch said that it was him who had decided to walk away from a number of the players they had been looking at. Pereira was one that was mentioned, and I think another was Foyth (albeit now in the 'google' player category) . The reason being he did not believe the fees being asked represented good value. I know that's only two of a long list that we have been linked with (probably falsely in many cases). But it was interesting because Poch apparently said that Levy wanted him to spend but it was he, Poch, that was being cautious and looking for value.
I mention it only because it is easy to just assume lack of transfer activity is Levy trying to negotiate everything to the nth degree and not backing Poch. Maybe that is not always the case and we need to be aware of the role that Poch plays here as well.

Something no other club does right? ALL transfer are a gamble and ALL clubs lose out on some players they sign.

Obviously, but if you look back at what I was replying to, someone said that our process for identifying players was now so slick and successful that other clubs with more money could just follow us and gazump us each time

I hear you all asking it, particularly @Jordinho "What is happening with Barkley" and so to answer, i have turned to the font of all knowledge, The Goat

Who: The Goat
When: 10th August
Where: SC

The Goat hears that the hold up with Barkley isn't at our end, it's due to Everton not wanting to weaken their bargaining position with Swansea. The Goat's source says to expect Barkley to arrive as soon as they sign Sigurdsson.

The Goat also hears that Barkley wants Spurs, he's convinced Pochettino will make him a top class player.

Asked if he believed Spurs are waiting to pounce, Koeman said: “I do not know. I am not sure. I have some experience.

“When I was in Southampton we lost some players, but I am mentioning the name of no club.”

Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama was sold by Saints last summer just after Koeman left for Everton but the Dutchman was still at St Mary’s when Spurs first made their move.

Wanyama had just one year left on his contract too and Spurs got him on a cut price deal of £11m - £1.5m less than Southampton paid Celtic for him three years earlier.

Koeman also insists the deal for Gylfi Sigurdsson from Swansea remains “close” despite reports this week that talks were on the brink of collapse.

Serious relegation fears. :D

On a more sensible note on the bolded part, I really don't think finishing 3rd and 2nd is coming up short at all.

Hitting 86 points is an incredible feat for us.

Since when did we benchmark by winning the league?

I do have an opinion on that and have already posted a lengthy reply which you totally misconstrued.

I have just gone back to your post and saw that you had edited it to include a lengthy reply after i had posted my response to your shorter version. So i did not misconstrue it. But i agree you updated post makes you view a lot clearer.

I agree that Poch is the one who knows better what we need or do not need and as i have said i have no problem when/IF we bring in more players. My point was that some fans will never be happy about how many and how much we spend as they will always think we need more. The point is that fans have NO idea what is going on behind closed doors at the club and it great to speculate about it.

However there is a massive difference between having a opinion and foaming at the mouth saying the club has no ambition and Levy has got it all wrong. Lets be honest mate we have heard from some fans who have been screaming blue murder about what we are or are not doing and in all honesty they/we know nothing about what is happening and will not until the window closes.

There is no need for frothing and moaning about Levy and the clubs lack of ambition until then.

Thanks for posting that, it shows ( if true) that all those who are ONCE again accusing Levy of having no ambition/ holding the club back are talking out of their arses again. As i have said before they are fans who will take any chance to dig Levy out, not because they have any real proof that he is (lacking ambition/holding the club back) but because they have this agenda about him and can not wait to wade in and rehash the stuff they have been saying for years about him. Sad really.

Ok... I just looked and compared passing and dribbles:
Here
Interesting that he compares favorably to Lamela here in terms of dribbling and passing and I don't think people describe Lamela as lacking a brain?
The two perform a very different function.

Everton pack deep behind the ball and Barkley is their go to man on a break - the one they look to release first. Lamela is usually facing a packed defence and the person we look to to do something unexpected in order to thread the ball through the defence.

Agree.

I also think ambition comes in many forms, one measure of which is certainly signing players.

But whether we sign anyone or not this summer (I think we will, however) I really don't think our (mid to long) term ambition can be questioned. Especially, if as mentioned above, it's Poch being conservative in the market, not Levy.

Currently we're the most ambitious club in the league.

Wonder how many people you'll get to bite at that monstrous joke of a statement, you scamp.
He really was a lot better. His ability was absolutely clear and he stood head and shoulders above what was a good youth side at the time.

The first time I watched him (I work in near proximity to Mos Eisley so had a few chances) I'd never seen someone strike a ball so cleanly. *

Actually, never is a slight exaggeration but someone like Zola was probably the last.

That's interesting. If true,it is then Poch that needs to understand the market has changed. However, I find it hard to believe that Poch, having identified the targets, it is then him that "walks away" on the grounds of value if Levy has sanctioned the transfer.

Strange times indeed.
