Roberto Soldado

someone mentioned that he could make a living in the hole....that does sound like a plan...but with that position comes a level of defensive responsibility towards the team when we dont have the ball. do people think solly will do that?

Not so much in a 4-2-3-1 where you have two deeper sitting CMs.

He's not been asked to track back much in his career with us so far, but he does appear to have a decent work ethic

Maybe because as an out and out striker he's just not scoring so Poch doesn't know where to play him.

Everyone keeps saying play him in the hole but we have 3 others who can play that role in Lamela, Eriksen and Kane and arguably play that role better.

I like the idea of a very fluid front 4 of any combination of Soldado, Kane, Lamela, Eriksen and Chadli (complimented by Townsend and Ade when we need a Plan B).

That interchangeability could be a real strength.

Soldado was a top top player in Spain but playing in a system that suited him. They took a successful player in a system and tried to make him something he wasn't under AVB and that was a lone striker.

I honestly believe the AVB era killed him, he was never someone to play up top alone with no service, his goals came from service and support. Now we are experiencing a player rank out of form/confidence who is being played in a multitude of systems and under 3 managers in 1.25 seasons.

I still rate him as I rate Erik, the clubs killed him, not the other way round

I think he'll come good. It was mentioned in a different thread yesterday how Demichelis and Coloccini were written off/ridiculed at similar stages in their EPL careers, but their quality eventually shone through. Soldado's got every tool, he just needs a bit of luck to bring the confidence back.

People clutching at straws as to why he will come good. He is clearly technically a good player but he is not a good fit for us or this league.

Mormon - As for playing better than eriksen has ever done in the hole? Are you sure mate - he showed some nice touches in first 20mins and then was anonymous as usual. Then for someone else to say he has a good workrate - I disagree and often think he is completely lazy and unmotivated.

Someone commented that he would have buried that chance that Ade missed against villa. I agree that Ade never looked like scoring but Soldado has missed sitter after sitter for us - so many in fact that it has almost been embarrassing. It's not the fact he's missing these chances, it's the fact he misses so badly. Maybe he would have scored but I would also have bet against it.

This is obv due to confidence and AVB clearly ruined him in the first 4 months. What is super disappointing is how he isn't even missing chances any more. TS gave him a good run in the team and there was something strangely positive about him consistently fluffing his lines - I thought 'it will come' however now He isn't running in behind, isn't busting a gut to get in the box and to me it looks like he is scared of missing chances which is unacceptable. With this attitude it will never come unless he starts to show a bit of bravery and put his neck on the line.

For 28m you have to be scoring goals, getting assists and being a focal point in our team - I have zero confidence he will do this even if given a run in the side. By all means give him a start against stoke with Kane but don't hold your breath.

I have seen enough of him in La Liga to know he is a good player.

His finishing in the 31 goal season was unreal at times but you look at his service then to now, its also different league

Agreed.

You simply don't lose the ability to score some of the goals he did. Service is crucial, a shame he joined on the back of Bale leaving.

In his last season bale provided nothing - he was all about goals. I think he read he only got 3 assists when played down te middle?

We should think with the fact that he is staying with us in our mind. We can noy buy him by less than 15 million pounds and that won't happen. Thus we have to look for the most valuable way to ues him.

One thing I've noticed is that Bobby has curbed his aggression since arriving in England. In La Liga he was quite fiery and up for a scrap.

Anyway only Tottenham would dare to buy a 26 mill striker and set the team up to play in a way that cannot get the best out of him. Well done everybody.

It could also be argued that if you are a 26 million pound player you shouldn't need the team set up a particular way to be able to perform.

Is he a 26m pound player though.... Ask avb and while you at it ask him about pauline

I dont agree with that, Ive seen him on quite a few occassions look fiery/aggressive and confronting either players or the referee and concluded that he could be a bit temperamental and I hadnt really seen much of him to Spain to think he had this side to him....

But Sold ado has always been a striker that thrived on quick clever service. He has never been the type to score great individual goals, make his own opportunities. The way he has been asked to operate since arriving has gone against his natural inclinations. Why the heck did AVB and Baldini buy him.

Poch is having the same problems. Both Poch and AVB favour one up front, inverted wide men, all the football mainly going through the congested centre.

He was like that in spain

The main person to blame for soldado's failures here is AVB. Absolutely sabotaged him by forcing him to feed of scraps and cutting of his supply line. A clueless manager that is given a poacher type striker then proceeds to stop the attacking midfielders from playing the ball early/quickly.

I think you did say at the time of the signing that Soldado was completly the wrong type of striker for how AVB wanted his teams set up.

It was actually the good form of Townsend and Lennon at the start of the season that saw him first placed in such an unsympathetic setup.

If AVB had got the inverted creative player he wanted (Willian), things might have been very different. Remember AVB's first choice CF was David Villa, who is very similar to Soldado, so there obviously was a plan.

Villa are Soldado are not similar though? they're not even close to being the same type of player.

You can't keep passing the buck onto the fact that AVB wasn't given first choice players. He had decent enough players in the squad to create more than they were creating (Which was practically nothing) and he could have chose a system better suited to Soldado's strengths if he wanted to.

Michael Owen said that when he was at Madrid he didn't particularly rate him and found it surprising that spurs splashed out the amount they did
