Politics, politics, politics

All Israeli governments since Six-Day War have generally done bad things, particularly the settlements. It's long past time they got off war footing and started normalising relations. I think maybe they could be offered NATO membership in exchange for fully surrendering Gaza, West Bank and Golan
I think that would be a good offer, but think through the logical outcome of Israel having NATO membership.

Within months we'd have to take out Palestine, probably Egypt too at some point.

I guess that would solve the issue but not in the way most people who want Israel to recognise Palestine as a state would like.

The type of immigration they voted against (uncontrolled unskilled economic migration to undercut wages) is one strand of gloablisation. But so are other Brexit grievances like erosion of sovereignty and wealth inequality.

The nationalisation party didn't win in 2017 because people were nervous Corbyn couldn't contain his Europhiles, so the Tories seemed a safer bet for delivering Brexit. That won't hold people back next time after when we are out
Globalisation and uncontrolled immigration are only linked because it suits your argument, its not a requirement.

The second point is you taking an advent that runs contradictory to your argument and trying to justify it .. There really is nothing to suggest (let alone be probable) your path will happen, its pie in the sky.

Of course they are linked. Multinationals make money by finding cheaper labour. The two ways to do this are either to shut down domestic production and manufacture in poorer parts of the world (the globalisation we saw in the 70s-90s) or import the sweatshops through social dumping (the globalisation we've had in the 00s and 10s).

Undermining wages and conditions is what defines globalisation (in contrast to internationalism, which is a positive thing)

The US and uncontrolled migration.

The US and Globalisation.

Which one is more strongly linked?

I thought this was quite an interesting talk re. lexit (left-wing brexit) thinking (quite long, so if you have an hour of your life to waste, go for it).

So Frank Field has resigned the Labour Whip. Over anti-Semitism apparently...of course it is Frank.

I don't like him or his politics, so good riddance as far as I'm concerned. And the real reason he's resigned is because he will very likely be de-selected in future, because mandatory re-selection seems on the cards after the coming Labour Party Conference.

The EU Commission is proposing to end the practice of adjusting clocks by an hour in spring and autumn after a survey found most Europeans opposed it.

Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said millions "believe that in future, summer time should be year-round, and that's what will happen".

The Commission's proposal requires support from the 28 national governments and MEPs to become law.

In the EU clocks switch between winter and summer under daylight saving time.

A European Parliament resolution says it is "crucial to maintain a unified EU time regime".

However, the Commission has not yet announced details of the proposed change. In a consultation paper it said one option would be to let each member state decide whether to go for permanent summer or winter time.

But the Commission warns that uncoordinated time changes between member states would cause economic harm.

In the survey, reported by German ZDF television, 80% of the 4.6 million respondents called for scrapping the spring and autumn clock change.

The UK is one of the 28 nations, but is due to leave the European Union in March 2019. Any change would be unlikely to happen before then.

Why do many dislike Europe's daylight saving time?
Some studies cited by the Commission point to adverse health impacts from the clock changes.

"Findings suggest that the effect on the human biorhythm may be more severe than previously thought," it says.

Clocks go forward by an hour on the last Sunday in March and switch back to winter time on the last Sunday in October.

Finland called for daylight saving to be abolished EU-wide, after a petition gathered more than 70,000 signatures from citizens calling for such a change.

Daylight saving was introduced in 1980 based on the argument that it would reduce energy costs. But the Commission says the data on energy-saving is inconclusive.

There is also no reliable evidence that the clock changes reduce traffic accidents, the Commission says.

The current seasonal clock changes are controversial partly because there is a big difference in daylight hours experienced by Scandinavia and by southern Europe.

Nordic countries have long, dark nights in winter and short nights in summer. The pattern in the south is more even across the seasons.

There are anomalies too. For example, neighbours Portugal and Spain are in different time zones, as are Sweden and Finland.

I thought daylight savings was as a benefit to Farmers?

We need to stay on BST (lighter evenings), not revert to GMT (lighter mornings) all year. I think the proposal is for darker summer evenings.

But as a general point, why the fudge is the EU getting involved in something like that? It's absolutely none of their business. America has 3 time zones in one country, Russia 9. Why the fudge do they want to try and homogenise a continent? The whole criticism is what works for southern europe doesn't work for northern europe

FWIW...

In response to the European Parliament resolution, the Commission has therefore committed to assess the two main policy alternatives available to ensure such a harmonised regime, which are:

  1. Keeping the current EU summertime arrangements as set out in Directive 2000/84/EC, or
  2. Discontinuing the current bi-annual time changes for all Member States and prohibiting periodic switches; again this would not affect the choice of time zone, and it would ultimately remain each Member State's decision whether to go for permanent summer or wintertime (or a different time).”
