Politics, politics, politics

Anyway, the football is on. Let's leave this for another day.

For what it’s worth I’m sure this debacle will come to an end and you and your family will be free to come and go as you please. Touch wood.

Freedom is at the heart of what the EU stands for, coming out of the ashes of World War II. Common sense will prevail.

The EU negotiations SHOULD be easy. In a room of reasonable, responsible adults the outcome should be simple. It is in all interests to trade freely (or near as) to the benefit of all.

Instead what we have is weak leadership getting shafted by an EU that is in no way as liberal and altruistic as its fans like to think. It is petty and punitive.

And, frankly, its approach to these talks has only enforced my desire to leave.

Couldn't agree more.

In fact, I've had more than one remain-voting friend express similar feelings to me. I actually suspect that such feelings might be under-appreciated among the wider population right now.

The whole world is short on common sense at the minute.

In which case let's remain - I'm sure the EU will give us the freedom to trade with whomever we want and however we want. I'm sure they'll also allow us the freedom to pay (or refuse) benefits to whomever we want. I'm looking forward to he bit where they allow us the freedom to apply (or not) whatever regulations we choose to ant prodicts that we are not trading with the EU.

You can't have a single market without common standards and you can't have a customs union without a common external tariff. Although there are some forms of customs union that would allow us to agree external FTAs but they would be limited in scope.

No need to apply standards for things that aren't being traded between members - no value in that for anyone. If the EU is about trade, as we are continually told, then there should be no issue with trading with whomever we wish.

All you do then is create loopholes that get argued over. What happens if you import a good that is not traded within the EU but then use that to make something that is? Everyone would spend all of their time in litigation.

It is like our current plan to remain in the single market for goods but not services. There are a lot of services that you can sneak in accompanying goods. It's not going to wash.

Different regulations would also make litigation a lot more expensive and complex. Right now, a court decision in one member state is accepted in all others. That would be impossible without common standards. Companies or individuals would have no option but to litigate in the defendant's jurisdiction.

In which case a group of countries who genuinely had trade at the forefront of their minds would avoid creating external trade barriers.

Of course, if they were a protectionist load of socialists, they might like external barriers.

The EU can't decide about the NI border as such, but NI can with a border poll if it comes to that. You could end up with weird sort of reverse good Friday agreement. NI will be a special case no matter what form brexit takes.

Hold on, did I make you write “guilty” when you described Camron unleashing Brexit? I didn’t put words in your mouth they are your own.

Why not just say, yes it’s a been perfection and I hold Cameron responsible?

“Brexit is the best thing.” Really! Despite us still not knowing what it is, having any positive plan for it, and it costing the UK in jobs, investment and growth now. Hmmm more delusions.

I’ve always seen you as courageous. But it takes greater strength to admit you were wrong rather than glibly trying to hold your ground.

The whole Brexit thing would probably never happened if Cameron had not made promises he could not make and came back from Brussels with his tail between his legs. That was all down to him. As for the rest of your post its all same o same o from you and one of the reasons i usually ignore your posts.

You have said many things on here which have been blown out of the water by the likes of Scara, you back off for a while and then return spouting the same brick.

Cameron wasn’t the first or last Tory leader to make concessions to eurosceptics in the party, those voices have been there since we joined and based on May’s erratic behaviour they are louder now than ever.

He called it, his name is on it, but a Tory govt calling an EU referendum had been inevitable since Major was ousted.

Cameron’s crime was allowing such a low bar for change.

He took no more of a gamble trying to put it back in the box than May took trying to strengthen her hand.

Are there any large developed nations that have complete free trade? African nations have complete trade freedom without any tariffs but it doesn't work well, EU nations have it with each other and it does. The notion that we have complete free trade with everyone without tariffs is a misnomer - it doesn't exist anywhere except in underdeveloped economies that have no trading standards. Same applies to trade regulations. Within the EU we CAN trade without tariffs and we help control the regulations. Most of our international trade is with our neighbours the EU. So yes the EU gives us more freedom and better terms in trade than we'd have otherwise. That's why we're in the Customs Union, and why Thatcher your hero was into it too.

What a good idea but do not hold your breath.

Ive not been directly effected by this sort of thing, so dont have much experience and wont even argue - Ill take your word for how we have done so far.

From what Ive seen the EU has hardly been forthcoming on the other side of the coin either, so a glimmer of hope would be that this is holding ones cards close to ones chest in a bargaining move.

I would be devastated if families like your own were affected in such a way.

Ive expected all along that there would be a cut off point where by if you are here, you are here. Id still hope for no less. Citizenship/right to stay/whatever that may be.

I care not for the complexity at all, ultimately simple things should drive it.

We are neighbours, allies, call it what you will. It is in both our and THEIR interest to play nicely, scratch each others backs, support each other...

To force us to play their way or otherwise punish us doesnt speak to that at all.

Yet you couldn't name or stand up to any one of the supposed things that have been 'blown out the water'. Prove me wrong.
