Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

Good, realistic and grown-up budget, and very well delivered. Sunak ending his days in a prominent political position looking like an angry, entitled fool. Obviously very upset about the non-dom changes.

Budget was set out very impressively by Reeves.

£40 billion to be raised

Big tax hike on employers NI.
Big change on pension funds falling into IHT - but didn’t mention anything in relation to the tax free cash.
A covid corruption commissioner to be appointed
Big Money set aside for both the haemophiliac blood scandal and the post office scandal.
So fluffing around the edges.

Just another gimmick budget maintaining the status quo

My only criticism is they could have gone harder on capital gains, and used that to give some relief to SMEs and public sector employers over NI.

Think businesses will really struggle with that budget. It's a stranglehold on the economy, make no mistake.
All that budget does is make money for the government to waste on things, as I very much doubt it will go where it is needed.

It also puts no money into the pockets of the lowest earners.

Add HS2 to Euston, I thought this was being scraped?

Lowest earners will pay more for goods as companies will increase prices.

Labour have no ideas how to take the country forward.

5 billion on building homes? Where are you going to build them? Flood plains, Farmland or Forest? Many brown fill sites are generally very good for nature as they are left alone.

It's an appalling budget that does nothing to help the lower end of workers.

Brexit chickens coming home to roost. This budget is now paying for the lost fiance jobs and corresponding income tax, the lost companies who moved into the EU and their corporation tax revenue. Ultimately making the UK a more expensive place to do business.

Still waiting for those upsides. Brexit hasn't made the quasi-bigots happy either, the 'burner accounts' in this thread maybe characters dropped in to entertain us, but they only mirror real disaffected narratives. What a great farce and embarrassment of UK history Brexit has been.

I agree, the brexiteers constantly lie about everything. Just look that the devastation in UK finance jobs since Brexit as you say. We shot ourselves in the foot and continue to pay the price.

So many untruths in one post.

Yeh I have not mulled of it too much but I am ok with it, we knew there would be a change of tact and whats laid out seems to take into account more the people who most need it in this country. As I say I need to go into it in more detail, but it was laid out in confident terms

Thats really not a bad thing. We really needed to rebalance our economy away from a capital class moving money in circles, creaming off a profit, to useful jobs that contribute to society.

Can't be good can it ^ @Kompakted There are no fantasy worlds where this is a good thing for the UK economy and exchequer.

The data is damning:

Long the jewel in the British industrial crown, the country's financial sector has also been in decline.

Economic output in the heart of Britain's financial sector, including banks and wealth funds, has fallen by more than 15% since late 2019, just before the UK formally left the EU.

Overall, financial services output in Britain has fallen by 1% since late 2019 - a stark contrast with France and Germany, where it has increased by 8%, and Ireland's 18% growth, national account data shows.

Politicians can't say why there is such a big deficit, as no one wants to go back and open those wounds.

I was having a beer with my old sociology lecturer the other week as he is a good mate of mine now and he is Spurs, we had abit of an extended chat about this (so bear with me hahaha), started off about kids and young adults consuming their life choices through social media more and more, one major reason there is a decline in having kids is because kids are seeing experiences promoted by influencers like travel and food and they are actively choosing experiences in life over families.

Anyway to fastforward the point was people are clearly consuming their data and heroes through the net now. People are making their moves through the internet with great influence, Tate, Rogan, Robinson (in Robinson case to crown men) so we are at a peak of "Personality Culting" (love that BTW) and its on steroids with social media. His point was that in 20 years time traditional politics and voting will change for good because people won't be listening to politicians in the traditional sense and social media influence will have created to much discourse for it not too, how that looks who knows but Its def a theory I agree with.

So Personality Culting is going to be the key IMO moving forward, its here now to stay, how thats tapped into is going to be a problem for politicians to solve
Agreed! It has been a massive issue for US dems in the last decade plus for sure.

That maybe true.

But it the police covering up information again.

When did they know?

When did Starmer know?

"If" he had converted Islam, why didn't they tell us

How long did the government know.

Once again it seems the government and police have been hiding things from the general public again.

Creating further divisions in the country.

This is my concern.

Until there is something concrete proving this to be the case, I see it as reasonable caution. Given the baying for blood and misinformation at the time, I think it makes sense to be careful. Truthfully, they've gone early with the whole niacin thing as there is apparently another possible explanation. If they indeed find there is no terrorist link to this niacin trace, will some assume it is a cover up?

The thing is, the data isn't damning. It is ironic that despite those thar were opposed to Brexit claiming that Brexit was based on lies, people have had to endure an almost endless stream of complete nonsense. I mean look at that buffoon you quoted there, says "we used to have 525,000 jobs in the city, but I estimate that we're lost 70,000. Now there is over 600K and we are booming in tech as well as finance now- but brexit has been devastating." It's almost a parody.

Both Jobs and Gates refused their children such technology. As they understood the dangers.

They were designed for an adult world.

Indeed!
In terms of unregulated -indeed, actively promoted!- 'weapons', smart phones have to be among the biggest our society has ever seen. Just like weapons, without education and awareness, they remain dangerous. How many people do we know who think they 'consume' news when they are actually 'consuming' opinions? And that's the tip of the iceberg.

I find the arguments over inheritance tax largely odd

I will hopefully be able to leave my son a nice egg, depending how work goes in the next 10 years maybe a nice large egg, but I would have hoped if I go by 75-80 (GHod willing) he will be 35-40 so I would hope well into his own journey, anything left by me, even if taxed to death will be a nice windfall and one to supplement his already built life. I would worry if he was not progressing on hope I pop my clogs

With respect, aren't you the parody? :p

Could not agree more.

But it's the financial services that have drag this country down as it centred wealth creation around London, the financial centre of Britian, with branches in other major towns, leaving the rest of the country behind.

Also, Ireland is a tax haven with low corporation tax of 12.5% , that many remain remainers cried about the UK becoming like this. Most of the left and remainers would be frothing at the mouth with rage, if a Tory government did this.

I would guess there is more to those figures than it first seems.
