Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

Not too much more than Johnson spent on refurbishing the Downing Street flat.

Definitely millions less than Sunak spent on helicopters for trips inside the UK which could easily have been made by train.

And hundreds of millions less than the so-called PPE bought from buddies during the pandemic.

At least when it’s the Foreign Office spending in this kind of area there is a pretty obvious reason.
Oh FFS not the old "the PM should make trips by bus and train like normal people" rubbish again.

Sorry everyone, you need to clear the station for the next hour while MI5 and the police do a security sweep prior to the train arriving from Leeds. Then we they need to do a sweep of the train itself. Then we need to get the PM and his staff and sexurity detail through the station and onto the train. We also need to make sure the track is swept by security before it sets off. PS you cant go into the same carriage where the PM is or youll get an MP5 in the face from an SAS in plain clothes. All stations the train passes through will have the platforms closed to the public and every station it stops at will be a high security vetting event for those trying to board.....and so on and so forth...

I think its more the hypocrisy on the reporting than the issue that he is on a helicopter

Just driven back from the gym using the wife's car.

Some bloke on radio 2 was talking to the presenter and apparently he has a podcast series from Eastern Germany and he said the is not even that much immigration in Eastern Germany and for anyone to vote the way they did means thee just racist really.

Now I'm fully aware what a few of you on here think of me. Bit well I'm of the opinion that some immigration is a good thing but completely uncontrolled immigration causes problems and allow the far right in.

Voted Labour last time, would have done the one before that if Corbyn had not flip flopped on leaving the EU. I got to say as someone who could easily be described as one of those red wall midlands (I live in the south actually) type voter. Some on the left just don't get it, whether it's this country or Germany or America.

And there is usually a high correlation between people that vote along anti migration lines and those that have lesser exposure to migrants.

It's easy (I'd say lazy. But I also appreciate some people don't have the capacity to counter) to believe propaganda and being scared of "the other" - it's a natural human trait, hard wired into us for survival.

Have you read/listened to "the nazi mind"?
I'm part way through - it's really fascinating, and has very different content than you might think.

Never listened to it. Will put it on the list to listen to.

I feel the is a ying yanf effect where things swung to far left then to far right.

I guess what I think the issue is sometimes people govern just for "their" side and not for the good of society in general.

That's been one of my biggest annoyances for decades and why I'd like to see coalition politics here.

But I'm no longer sure that's the case because even countries that have a coalition focus are moved to the right and far right

Most, if not all, parties generally care more about being in power than actually enacting the policies that they campaigned on. A coalition obviously have to agree on a joint platform before they can form a government and that can be a benefit as you avoid going too far in any direction, but you also get the extremist fringe parties in actual positions of power.

In Norway we have too many small parties in the parliament and there's a lot of overlap on policies. I didn't vote last time as I can't find anyone I agree with and it's the same people standing as candidates year after year. Politics these days is just full of grifters and extremists. Regular, decent people prefer staying out of it.

This is basically the Preface chapter (is a preface a chapter? It must be, Surely) to the 2050 book "How Corporate became Governance"

Thanks for saving me the bother @Grays 1980.

He's either right to get in a helicopter or be driven around in armoured cars with security detail and wrong to go waltzing around amongst the general joes on the tube or train with a huge target on his head saying "please shoot me here" or he's not. I don't see any hypocrisy in reporting. The hypocrisy inherent in tribal politics is picking apart literally everything "the other side" does even if its the right thing to do and what every other head of government and head of state in the world does.

The Queen used to travel on the train all the time. British security has always been based on the mundane, rather than the showy American style. Black cabs and train carriages that just have 'door out of order' signs on them.

The King of Norway has always been famous for using public transport. He says he doesnt need a bodyguard because he has 5 million of them

Wasn’t he posting on here? A royal yid!

You mean she travelled on her own private royal train? She didn't get on the 10:00 Kings Cross to Edinburgh did she? It is probably cheaper to maintain and fly a helicopter.

I like simple politics, Labour supports and lead media complain about excess use of choppers, Tories moan about food expenditure when most sensible people realise the PM can't travel by rail and you don't host foreign super powers in McDonalds. But I get Mikeys point when directed at the twitter poster who is trying to make a hypocritic point.

Anyway days calling

Fair enough. I agree.

2.6% GDP to be spent on defence (2.5% def plus 0.1% cyber. Not quite sure why they are separate) from 2027 (appx 14bn P/A)
And 3% in next parliament.

Funded by cutting development aid by 0.2% GNI.

Definitely a bit of a wartime speech Starmer has just delivered. As well as drawing lines in the sand before meeting Trump.

Starmer and Macron are standing up to Trump.
Let's see what he does
(Badonoch still Batbrick)

Strange times we live in.

By "standing up to Trump" you mean suddenly implementing the defence spending Trump said he'd mandate other NATO countries to do otherwise he'd walk the US out? Trump is calling the tune on everything. It absolutely had to be done BTW. I said in my previous post that decades of degrading our armed forces meant that 2% NATO target no longer would cut it and it would take 3% to get us back to where we need to be in about 5 years time.

I'm glad Starmer has reached the same conclusion, but let's be clear: Trump has been saying Europe has to look after itself for years and that it's going to be "America first" from now on while he's in office. So I don't equate this to standing up to Trump, I equated this to being kicked out the home by the wife after decades of taking the p*** and then going "oh well guess i best get my act together and get myself my own house"
