Poch and Mitchell admire Jonjo Shelvey

I think we'd have to be looking to sell a centre midfielder before buying one.

Try 5.

If we assume Bentaleb, Mason and Alli are going to make up 3 of our 4 CMs, that leaves just one space for Capoue, Paulinho, Dembele, Stambouli and Carroll, before any incomings.

if Poch only wants one centre mid, and he is going to be a first team player, then id be disappointed if we delayed bringing him in just because we need to get rid of what we currently have.

Poch knows who he has to sell, we have all summer to offload, he must be allowed to bring his main midfield target asap so he can get to work the squad he wants for the start of pre season.

i'd expect Carroll and Alli to be back out on loan next season

Carroll is 23. You can't send players that age out on loan - you have to back them or sack them.

He's made just 20 EPl appearances. Compare that to Shelvey, who is the same age, and already made 100. Or Eriksen - again the same age- and 175 top flight appearances and more than 50 national caps.

I can see us bringing in one CM regardless of movement out, but this guy? Why do the papers even bother?

why do they bother? is not hard to see why we are linked and there maybe something in it. Going by all the signings made under Poch so far, this is the kind of level we seem to be after. Plus, we have a good relationship with Swansea with players going both ways, as i mentioned earlier Shelvey's agent is a big mate of Levy, Shelvey is the kind of young, mobile energetic midfielder which Poch seems to like. Into the last 2 years of his deal, maybe Swansea want to cash in

I dont rate him either, but heyho what does it matter what fans think.

it's not just an age thing, players mature at different rates

We have to get a CM player in as priority because what we have is not good enough, not sure Shelvy is the answer though.

We need an upgrade on what we have in central midfield, not more of the same. We already have plenty of mediocre central midfielders, we don't need another one in Shelvey.

I wasn't aware of this rule that didn't allow players over 23 to be loaned out.... Has anybody told this to the numerous European clubs that have players out on loan older than 23?

It is slightly churlish to compare Carroll to a player like Shelvey. Carroll's slight stature always meant that he was likely to take longer to be ready for top level football and Eriksen was able to do his developing in a far less physical and fast paced league.

Carroll could well develop further by being given another PL loan next season. Even though he is 23 already, it is probably still slightly too early to either keep him or sell him. If we keep him then he would be unlikely to get too many games for us and if we sell him now we could regret it as there is definitely a good football there who just needs more experience and confidence to start really demanding the ball and trying to really run games in the way that Modric did.

He could improve us as a backup no 10 to Eriksen. We currently have no one that can play well in that position.
