Poch and Mitchell admire Jonjo Shelvey

According to The Guardian, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Swansea City midfielder Jonjo Shelvey this summer.

Spurs have already landed one summer signing in Koln defender Kevin Wimmer, and The Guardian believe that a deal for Burnley right back Kieran Trippier is also edging ever closer to completion.

Intriguingly, they add that Swansea ace Shelvey is also a target, despite fellow midfielder Dele Alli returning from his loan spell at former club MK Dons.

Shelvey, 23, hit three goals for Swansea last season, playing a key role in Garry Monk's midfield as he continues to improve in South Wales, and is now considered to be one of the more underrated English midfielders.

Now though, The Guardian believe that Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino and Head of Recruitment Paul Mitchell are keen admirers of Shelvey, and are considering a shock summer bid to lure him to White Hart Lane.

Shelvey was not only born in London but spent much of his early career in the capital, joining Arsenal and West Ham as a youngster before moving on to Charlton, where he impressed enough to earn a 2010 move to Liverpool.

After struggling to make the grade at Anfield, Shelvey was sold to Swansea in 2013, and having impressed at the Liberty Stadium, he could make a move back to London this summer.

Spurs and Swansea appear to have a strong relationship having seen the likes of Michel Vorm, Ben Davies, Kyle Naughton and Gylfi Sigurdsson move between the clubs in the last 12 months, and Pochettino could look to exploit that once again this summer.

He's not actually a bad player tbh. For all the Tom Carroll advocates, he was the guy who kept Carroll out of the team all this last season (and they are the same age).

He reminds me quite a bit of Danny Murphy (and not just follically). I don't think he's quite our level though (similar to Murphy)
 
he has the same agents as Bale, Caulker, Sigurdsson, Trippier. Stellar Group, run by Levy's mate Johnathan Barnett. Former Spurs players D Bent and P Crouch are also clients

I don't dislike Shelvey, lots of energy and a good range of passing on him. Is he better than what we have already? Probably not, but he'd compliment our existing midfield.

Also he's only 23 and since getting regular football at Swansea has improved a fair bit, playing well in the second half of last season.
 
I like the guy as a player: energetic, fiery, good passer, possesses a whomper of a shot. However, I don't think he's suited for either of our pivot spots, and if we're thinking about buying him to fill the AM position...why? Mason can do a good job there, if for some reason Eriksen, Pritchard, Lamela cutting in from out wide and Dembele aren't enough options to have for that role.

Mason never played this position but Poch saw something and trusted him to do a job there. Maybe he sees potential in Shelvey to drop back

It might make sense if Dembele wants out to get first team football in a Euro Championship season

Possibly, although Dembele doesn't seem to be the ambitious type. However, we'd be better served just replacing him with Alli or Carroll in that case, imo.

True, but you know, square pegs in round holes. A specialist would be perfect for us: repurposing a player who'll likely cost us quite a bit doesn't seem like the most judicious use of resources, especially given that, as above, we can just use Alli or Carroll for that role if we had that idea.
