Redknapp ready to unleash Defoe

Spurs boss backing patient frontman to lead the charge against City

Last Updated: January 20, 2012 9:39am

Harry Redknapp understands Jermain Defoe's frustration at a lack of playing time, but is backing him to play a big part in Tottenham's title push.

The England international recently played down talk of him making a move during the January transfer window, but he is keen to find regular action.

The depth Spurs now have in their squad means Redknapp cannot guarantee him a starting place, with Emmanuel Adebayor and Roman Pavlyuchenko also competing for a striking berth, while Rafael van der Vaart is often deployed in a deep-lying role.

Defoe has had to be patient this season, making just seven starts, but he is set to be handed a starring role in Spurs' crunch clash with league leaders Emirates Marketing Project on Sunday.

With Adebayor ineligible due to the terms of his loan deal from City, Redknapp is ready to turn to a man he considers to be among the best frontmen in English football.

"Jermain Defoe is one of the best finishers I've seen," the Spurs boss wrote in his column in The Sun.

"It's been difficult for him at Tottenham this season and I can understand his frustration.

"With Emmanuel Adebayor here, it's been a case of Manu and who else up front?

"Now, with Manu's loan terms preventing him playing against his parent club Emirates Marketing Project, Jermain has a chance to make a huge impact on the title race and the competition to get into the Champions League next season.

"City have won all 10 Prem home games this term but it would be a fantastic achievement for us to go there and change that.

"Defoe could have a key role in that. I watch him in training and he has the shortest backlift of any striker, he barely bends his leg when teeing up a shot but then he is a brilliant finisher.

"I've taken Jermain with me to nearly all the clubs I've managed. I signed him as a little kid at West Ham, he has been with me at Portsmouth and now at Spurs.

"Our squad is more than capable of coming away with something from Emirates Marketing Project, and it could be a big day for Defoe."

Emirates Marketing Project host Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday 22nd January 2012 in the 22nd round of Premier League matches in the 2011-12 season.

City come into the match as Premier League leaders on 51 points with Spurs in third place on 46 points.

This will be the 144th time the two teams have met.

The first meeting came on 16th January 1909 in the FA Cup 1st round (today's 3rd round) at Hyde Road in Ardwick (City's original name) in a match which Spurs won 4-3.

The first League meeting came in the First Division in December 1910 at White Hart Lane and resulted in a 1-1 draw. Walter Tull, who was the first black outfield footballer to play League football scored Tottenham's goal. City won the reverse fixture in January 1911 2-1.

All the League meetings between Spurs and City up to season 1934-35 took place in the First Division.

The clubs were drawn together in the 1913-14 FA Cup 2nd round with City wining 2-1 at Hyde Road (City would move to Maine Road in 1923 and stay there for the next 80 years) and also met in the 1921-22 FA Cup 3rd round with FA Cup holders Tottenham beating City 2-1 at White Hart Lane.

The only League meetings between the clubs outside the Top Flight took place either side of the Second World War with City winning both Second Division matches in the 1938-39 season and taking three points out of four off Spurs in the Second Division matches played in 1946-47.

Spurs and City resumed their Top Flight meetings in the 1951-52 season.

The clubs contested the 1956 FA Cup Semi-Final at Villa Park with City winning 1-0 with a goal scored by Bobby Johnstone. City would go on to win the FA Cup that season, beating Birmingham City 3-1 in the Final at Wembley.

Tottenham Hotspur and Emirates Marketing Project contested the centenary FA Cup Final in 1981. The match finished in a 1-1 draw after extra time after Tommy Hutchison had put City ahead but also scored an unfortunate own goal.

The replay was the first to be played at Wembley and Spurs won 3-2 with a brace from Ricky Villa and a goal from Garth Crooks. City goals were scored by Steve MacKenzie and Kevin Reeves. Ricky Villa's second goal was voted Goal of the Century and the match is one of the best remembered Finals of all-time.

The first of three Football League Cup meetings came in the 1992 3rd Round with Spurs winning 1-0 at Maine Road with a Vinny Samways goal. Tottenham also won the other two matches - a 4th Round match in 2003 3-1 and a 5th round match in 2007 2-0.

City had an amazing comeback in the 2004 FA Cup 4th Round replay at White Hart Lane after going three goals down to goals from Ledley King, Robbie Keane and Christian Ziege in the first half. City, who had been reduced to ten men after Joey Barton received a second yellow card, scored four second half goals from Sylvain Distin, Paul Bosvelt, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Jonathan Macken to win a memorable game 4-3.

Both Spurs and City were founder-members of the Premier League, although City have only competed in 15 of the 20 seasons played in the competition so far, while Spurs have been one of seven ever-present clubs.

Spurs have generally had the upper hand during this era with nineteen wins to City's five wins and five matches drawn. In fact, City have only won three times in the past 17 meetings between the clubs in all competitions.

In 2009-10, Spurs did the 'double' over City with a 3-0 win at the Lane with goals from Nico Kranjcar (2) and Jermain Defoe followed by a vital 1-0 end of season win at Eastlands, which secured fourth place and Champions League football for Spurs thanks to a Peter Crouch goal.

Last season's fixtures featured an opening day of the season match at White Hart Lane which finished in a 0-0 draw and a late season game at Eastlands which City won 1-0 thanks to a Peter Crouch own goal.

During the summer, Spurs secured the services of Emirates Marketing Project's Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor on a season's loan.

The match at White Hart Lane earlier this season ended in a comprehensive 5-1 win to Emirates Marketing Project with Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko scoring four goals for the visitors, who were 2-0 up at half-time. Sergio Aguero also scored for City while Tottenham's goal came from Younes Kaboul.

Overall, City have won 52 games, Spurs have won 57 games and the remaining 34 matches played have been drawn.

From the press conference today:

Sandro and Gallas not fit

King a game-time decision

Defoe set to start in Ades absence

In which case I'll be betting on over 25 offsides, in the first half

I dont care. A player like Ade or Defoe will be caught off side because they play off the shoulder of the last defender. However there will be times when they get it just right - it may be once or twice a game. Look at Ade against Wolves - the one time he got it right he scored (ok disallowed but still got it right). I dont mind if they get offside.

I think we'll create chances but struggle to put it past Hart, and I'll be amazed if we score more than once without Adebayor. I hope I'm wrong, but I reckon 0-1 will be the limit for us, and if they score first, we won't win. I said 1-1 last week, so I'm sticking with that.

Youre just a brick statto

Blimey, City have won all ten of their Prem home games?! Impressive. I'll go for a score draw 1-1 like someone else says provided King plays.....

Easy to put up the team this time:

------------------Fridel------------------
Walker---King-------Dawson-----BAE
Lennon----Parker---Modric------Bale
------------VDV-----------------------
--------------------ADE--------------

Emirates Marketing Project and Tottenham have a long and shameful history of, to put it in the politest possible way, ballsing things up. In City’s case this tendency to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory is so ingrained in the club’s psyche that there was a comprehensive Wikipedia page headlined “typical City” detailing past indiscretions (it’s disappeared now – you’re inevitably going to lose some things when turn your website off and on again to make a point.)
Tottenham have a similar history of coming agonisingly close to triumph and faltering under close examination, but these are different times. Spurs have frequently looked like the best team in the league this season, while City have all of that delicious money, which theoretically exempts them from the sort of Bad Times that spring to mind when you hear names like Thaksin Shinawatra, Jamie Pollock or Brian Horton.
Sunday’s game could be the making of one of these sides. City, on an uncertain run, can banish all that troubling talk of experience deficits and valuable missing Toures, with a decisive win. Spurs are right back in the title race at the time of year when that phrase begins to mean something if they can inflict City’s first home league defeat of the season. On past form there’s every chance that one of these sides will give the other a gigantic helping hand along the way.
So probably a draw, then.

From todays Telegraph. The biggest difference is Emirates Marketing Project. Their current club is the same only in name and dull witted support. Spurs are still the same club they have always been, only now, we have got a team fit to grace the name of the club that did the double.

you might like to reconsider your team, you may have missed a vital statistic
