OMT *** Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool ***

You've got to take in to consideration our opponents style of play and how we'd counter it though - would you be confident in a Wanyama/Dier partnership being able to pass their way out of trouble if being relentlessly pressed? I think CM is the key position tactically going in to the game and having someone with a good short quick passing game in there is vital

Indeed. I think Wanyama is a bit too cumbersome on the ball for a team deploying a high press against us.

They beat Barcelona, ok in friendly, 4 zip then win 4-3 at Emirates then lose to Burnley 2 zip.

Who knows?

Yeah good idea - let's drop our man of the match from the previous game and throw a young player in at the deep end in a massive game against a rival who's game plan is about high pressing and denying our midfielders time on the ball.

That's exactly how you break a promising youngster's confidence and get the fans and media saying he's not ready or even not good enough for the first team, and that we need to loan him out or sell him to Bournemouth.

This forum never ceases to amaze me sometimes...

@Gutter Boy was totally against us signing Wanyama because he claimed he was mediocre and not good enough for us. So now even when Wanyama has a very good performance and scores the winning goal you should not be surprised that he would make a case for Winks ahead of Wanayama.

Even when we signed Wanyama @Gutter Boy still insisted he would be no more than a backup player for Dyer so I am not surprised he would play Winks ahead of him.

I would keep Dier and wanyama in midfield to combat their press, but also to allow us to press really hard and still leave a strong defensive unit.
Have alli, eriksen, Lamella and janssen up front. Lamella and janssen to press like maniacs for 60 or 70 mins before bringing on Harry and son.

Poch gave Mason his first start in a NLD and he thrived. If they are good enough...

I might be inclined to give your post a bit more credit if Winks had come off the bench in mid-week and scored a confidence boosting screamer to turn around a cup tie. Or if the player he'd be replacing in the starting XI was Paulinho.

Draw written all over this one. 1-1. Would love us to stuff the scousers but we don't exactly have a great record in recent times do we!?

We'll see something similar to Palace. We completely stifled them centrally and all they managed was to get the ball to an isolated Zaha or Townsend. Liverpool, despite having 80 % possession, didn't create anything against Burnley. Two solid blocks of four saw the dippers attacking play reduced to aimless crosses and long range shots.

if not for their midweek game i would have feared for the worst and predicted our first loss.

i'm upgrading it to a frustrating draw.

as per my earlier post in the thread i think it'll be important to have a CM who can pass well under pressure to cope with Liverpools press - i can see us getting penned in if we start with both Dier and Wanyama as i think we'll go sideways/backwards too often which will give Liverpool the incentive to come forwards. Carroll, despite his faults, is cool and calm with the ball under pressure, has great awareness and seems to always find a man in space as opposed to just getting rid of the ball to the nearest player, which will be important as we try to relieve pressure and counter quickly.

id bring Son in to add some pace to our attack, i expect Liverpool to try and take the game to us and i think having Son there to get in behind and exploit space could be a handy out-ball - I have chosen to go with Kane as 10 over Eriksen/Alli because i saw a little bit of a partnership brewing with him and Janssen on Saturday and i think they could further exploit Liverpools backline.

Barring any injuries - if there's any changes to Saturday's starting lineup other than Alli coming in I'll be gobsmacked.

Eriksen or Janssen will be the ones to make way.
