OMT - Tottenham Hotspur vs. Everton FA Cup

All true but they were in a tight line and he was the one player behind the line playing Bernard onside. [emoji2379]
Who Doherty?
Watch it from the original pass he is playing the man he is marking off. The issue is that Bernard ran through from midfield so now he is onside and no one has tracked him
The one that was super poor was Richarlsons too
Toby has to control the line but he can’t be off at Tanguy is on the floor
Sanchez can’t see that but Toby is look at it
I know people will defend him and I’m in the extreme but the guy has simply not got any redeeming features anymore like most of our CBS

Fantastically frustrating. The bright spot is that we played quite well, rest of the season could be fun if we keep attacking like this. Can only hope we got our individual defensive errors out of the way in one game for a while, but not at all confident about that.

Is this why we've been playing so deep? Are we really just so extremely porous defensively that our defenders need all that protection to look even alright?

Yes.

And we need to stop conceding cheap penalties. That cost us last night as well as in games against Saudi Sportswashing Machine, Liverpool, Leicester and Chelsea.

The point is to enjoy a match of football once or twice a week. I'd love us to win a trophy, but not at all costs. I've been saying this all along. I'd much rather enjoy one or two matches of football a week rather than hate watching football for a year and celebrate winning a trophy one night in May. I don't see the point of that. The journey is also the point in following football for me. It's not all about trophies. Anyone who'll have me believe that, I'm just going to disagree with. If you win a trophy for having played blistering football, fine! Love it. But win a trophy by sitting back and being a negative boring team to watch - fudge that. Gives me very very little, personally. I think people put too much emphasis on trophies.
Could not agree more! It's a very long time since I enjoyed a game of football as much as I did yesterday! It was a fantastic game of football, with some very good attacking football from both teams, and ditto bad defending from both teams.
But it was the most entertaining game I've seen for ages! It was end to end stuff for 120 minutes! What more can you ask for?
Of course it would be nice if we came out on top, but it's not the end of the world that we didn't. We still have more than enough games left as it is, so going out of the FA cup is not really all that bad.
I'd have this kind of games every week if I could choose, and we'd win the majority.
Chillax and try to enjoy the football!

Or we could have lost
I mean what we have shown consistently is we defend like utter tossers

I don't think that's true, i think we've made our share of defensive mistakes that have ended up costing us more points than they should have because we aren't attacking well enough.

At the game in his interview Jose was asked could he do something different...
He said
We could be more defensive but we could lose 1 nil as a mistake is always there

don’t forget in the panache game for example we had more than enough chances to win
Same as Fulham where their keeper made some good saves
The atfack does need to convert more
But the defending is the worst we have seen in a very long time

It happens too often and yet he is meant to be the leader of the line (that’s part of the issue as we have no leaders still)
I mean it can be argued that he is last man so calls the line but he just doesn’t move anywhere quick enough
People are remembering good Toby.... that players not been here for 2 years

I don’t think a single person is trying to argue that Toby is at the level he was years ago.

I am just arguing that he is still better than Dier and Sanchez. And that he was defensively less bad than Sanchez last night.

We paid the price for wasteful finishing and truly appalling defending. It seems strange to lay so much blame at the door of a player that didn’t even come on until it was 4-4 (Winks). However, his contribution in his half hour on the field was so overwhelmingly negative that he deserves to be called out on it. Dele was rubbish too, although he hasn’t played any minutes (particularly against decent opposition) for months. The main takeaway is to reiterate that we desperately need new defenders.

We very rarely concede more than one goal, mistakes or not - that shouldn't be a problem if the other end of the pitch is doing it's job.

If argue that the mistakes are being made because the players can’t defend
The goals that everyone skimps back too like Palace example are very very defendable.
That ultimately comes down to poor play by those players.

Yep
I agree
We have to take out chances too
I mean Saudi Sportswashing Machine don’t draw with their only shot of the game if we’re not wasteful in front of goal
Palace too
That’s two games where we lost points because we didn’t take chances and in the case of both games too didnt deal with a set piece (all be it the rules cost us cs Saudi Sportswashing Machine too)
I even wolves away we really didn’t create much so that’s a shocker
West Ham... we set a league record for goals conceded in that timeframe
Fulham... had chances and didn’t take them
Then conceded the ball like a grenade

But that var is sooo low
I mean like grass level low
So he is on par with two guys who no one wants in the team. I mean to me he has shown nothing better than them in the games ... unless we go back to the low block 6 man defence which is when Toby had some great games

There in is the problem, we've not played well lately but we are being beaten due to individual errors, this type of problem drains confidence in the whole team. It's totally against Mourinho's strategy but we might as well go total "Ossie" in games, forget about control and "game management" and hope we an out score teams.

Palace was a goal from a set piece wasn't it? We're about mid table on the goals conceded table in that manner iirc and most goals from set pieces should have been defended better.

I think if you were to analyse every teams goals conceded you would see a similar level of 'defensive mistskes' - it's just for us people are going in looking for players to pin goals on. Confirmation bias?

If we were winning those games no ones worrying about the goal conceded and so no ones talking about defensive mistskes

It is a low bar, but I’m just saying that until we buy someone new Toby should be our #1 CB. We’ll just have to agree to disagree at this point though if you think his performances have been no better than Dier or Sanchez.

I think we should bear in mind that one of the goals was a very soft / dodgy penalty (IMO), and most of the others were good to very good finishes. As bad as some of the individual mistakes were, I don’t think they would normally lead to five goals being conceded. We were just punished by Everton being very clinical. Indeed, I think that kind of overall performance is much more likely to lead to victory than our Brighton or Chelsea performance, for example. So I hope we continue to play in this attacking way, and gradually the results will turn our way (even if we can’t completely stop the mistakes).

Defending is football too, if everyone just attacked all of the time football would turn into basketball with scores to match. There has to be balance, the game needs both, else it will be boring.
