With hindsight, an exciting cup tie although it didn't always feel like it during the game.
Our first half was very disappointing and we were very shaky defensively - but it was a totally different back five, unaccustomed to playing together, and it didn't seem like anyone was controlling the line or directing their positioning.
Son was frustrating - and selfish on a couple of occasions- and spent too much time outside the box. Better second half (obviously, with the goals). N'Koudou had some promising moments. Sissoko? Hmm. Heavy first touch too many times but unlucky on at least one occasion when Son should have played him in. I thought Onomah tried hard, and from a skim through this thread I think he has been given a harder time than he deserves.
We lacked creativity. Winks ( my MOTM ) was probably our most creative for the first hour which shows what we were missing. He did very well indeed - a very, very good player in the making.
I knew it was coming but I hated the boos at the half time whistle. Whatever your frustrations as a fan, it really can't help a youngish and relatively inexperienced team. They may not have deserved a standing ovation but they would have known it wasn't good enough without the booing as they walked off to face the Poch music.
We looked better second half. I feel for Janssen as every time he got near the ball he was practically bear hugged or hauled down. It was good to see his determination to take the ball for the penalty. He came close on a few occasions especially with the header near the end : the Wycombe goalie is not only very tall but seemed to have extremely disproportionately long arms even for such a tall body. Against most goalkeepers that would have been a goal.
Dele is special, although he tried a few too many back heeled flicks. But he is our conjurer and there is always a frisson of excitement when he gets on the ball.
Resilience showed through in the end and Wycombe may be rueing some of the time wasting that led to at least one of the added six minutes.
If it hadn't been against us I would have felt very sorry for them. They came to us and went for it. Got away with more than would be allowed in the PL but they did their supporters proud and were deserving of the ovation they got from the home crowd at the end.
It was far from our most convincing performance but in the second half (with the addition of Dele and Dembele no doubt helping) we looked more settled and did enough to deserve to win.
We live to fight another round.
