*** OMT Tottenham Hotspur v Wycombe Wanderers ***

Phew, i hope Poch learns from this for the next rounds. I would love a cup win, more than a 4th place finish.
Not sure what there is for Poch to learn. He played a similar team against Villa and we went through without getting bothered much, so why would he field a stronger team against a team that's two leagues lower? Just happened to be one of those days and we did come back playing a man down.

It's not gone for another generation.

Our best side is as good as anyone's and we'll only get better with age. We can also improve further by bringing some new players in.

To say it's gone for a generation is bordering on the absurd.

I haven't got over last season.

I've seen enough in my time to know that whilst these are good times and our level of consistency is far better than it has ever been in the last 2 decades, I stand by my assertion that our chance has gone.

That team we put out today has bossed decent teams in Europe. Wycombe were just great and that's the magic of the cup.

Gazza dug us out of a similar pickle against Notts County in 1991 IIRC.

This is the Chinese year of the roosterrel. Name. On. The. Cup

Just watched the match. I was expecting an absolute brick show given the post match narrative and fan reaction's, but I have no idea how some people were so tinkley about it. Maybe it was the fact that we are the mighty Tottenham and we shouldn't be winning a game against a League 2 side in injury time, but we were nowhere near as bad as some make out. Son was absolutely diabolical in front of goal today. He made all the right runs, got in some great position's and should've had a brace before half time.

As for the poor players, Vorm had a stinker whilst Wimmer looked off the pace. Maybe it was Akinfenwa making them look over the shoulder's all the time, but Wimmer never looked assured enough on the ball. Sissoko and Onomah had a bad first half and I'm not convinced either should be playing behing the front man. Neither of those two have the instincts that Son, Alli and Eriksen have and are a split second too slow to break into the box. Sissoko was better in the second half, a lot of our play came through him, whilst Onomah got pushed out wide, where he never looked comfortable. GKN for me had a bright opening 30. He did fade after that, but he kept attacking his fullback and put in some decent crosses (some weren't good, but most were).

We played well for large spells of the game and whilst I feel bad for Wycombe and the manner in which we won it, we did create enough today to win the game.

With hindsight, an exciting cup tie although it didn't always feel like it during the game.
Our first half was very disappointing and we were very shaky defensively - but it was a totally different back five, unaccustomed to playing together, and it didn't seem like anyone was controlling the line or directing their positioning.
Son was frustrating - and selfish on a couple of occasions- and spent too much time outside the box. Better second half (obviously, with the goals). N'Koudou had some promising moments. Sissoko? Hmm. Heavy first touch too many times but unlucky on at least one occasion when Son should have played him in. I thought Onomah tried hard, and from a skim through this thread I think he has been given a harder time than he deserves.
We lacked creativity. Winks ( my MOTM ) was probably our most creative for the first hour which shows what we were missing. He did very well indeed - a very, very good player in the making.
I knew it was coming but I hated the boos at the half time whistle. Whatever your frustrations as a fan, it really can't help a youngish and relatively inexperienced team. They may not have deserved a standing ovation but they would have known it wasn't good enough without the booing as they walked off to face the Poch music.

We looked better second half. I feel for Janssen as every time he got near the ball he was practically bear hugged or hauled down. It was good to see his determination to take the ball for the penalty. He came close on a few occasions especially with the header near the end : the Wycombe goalie is not only very tall but seemed to have extremely disproportionately long arms even for such a tall body. Against most goalkeepers that would have been a goal.
Dele is special, although he tried a few too many back heeled flicks. But he is our conjurer and there is always a frisson of excitement when he gets on the ball.
Resilience showed through in the end and Wycombe may be rueing some of the time wasting that led to at least one of the added six minutes.
If it hadn't been against us I would have felt very sorry for them. They came to us and went for it. Got away with more than would be allowed in the PL but they did their supporters proud and were deserving of the ovation they got from the home crowd at the end.
It was far from our most convincing performance but in the second half (with the addition of Dele and Dembele no doubt helping) we looked more settled and did enough to deserve to win.
We live to fight another round.

Nicely conjured sentence too.

well i'm just pleased we won because it was the last leg of a 4 team accumulator ;)

In all seriousness, thank GHod we don't have a replay and I'd rather win this than the Europa

I wonder if CCV and Onomah would not benefit from loans.
I felt Alli was battle hardened due to his experience with MK Dons and Wycombe didn't faze him. CCV and Onomah need the same.
Not just physical hardening but also decision making. CCV for example did not need to make the tackle for the pen, the ball was close to the bye line, he just needed to cover the run. A bit more experience should help with decisions.
Onomah has skill and vision but I feel he is losing confidence, just regular games somewhere might help to re-build this.

I thought Kashket, Hayes and Akinfenwa were a lot better than Onomah, and Pierre was better than CCV, so I'm not sure they would get "regular games" at League 2 level

Just watched on MotD, and it really didn't do much other than the goals.

They were cheating from the off. Their No.2 had hold of, pushed, shirt-pulled NKoudou for the first 2 minutes - mainly when the ball was nowhere near. He even trod on his heel and tried pushing him over while he was kneeling to pull his boot back on.

And this was going on all over the pitch. The referee only gave fouls against us when their chap had simply thrown himself to the floor. Their penalty wasn't, CCV got the ball, which is why it came to a near stop and changed direction.

2nd half there were rugby tackles, judo holds sometimes lasting 7or8 seconds or 10yds, mahoosive time-wasting.

Eventually our guys started pushing them around, and the ref realised he'd overdone his 'equaliser' rôle.

It was a shame, because their forward play was good enough (well taken goals), especially against our defenders who had decided to show off their full range of clangers. Not that our midfield didn't chip in, most notably JO who consistently demonstated his inability to slice the Dijon. Moussa is saving his 30mill performance for when we sell him for 10mill.

Son never gave up, but was leaning back too much. His second was deffo an OG, but at that moment we were due something. My MotM, for never giving it up, and knowing which way it is to the opponents area ..... Harry Winks.

The old Spurs circus is back ! Thought we would never see the circus score of 4-3, 4-4, 5-4 under Pochettino again. But they are back again ! The last time we beat a team 4-3, it became the turning point in their history as they got inspired so much that they turned from a relegation fighting team to winning the PL the following season ! That team was Leicester ! So, don't be surprised if Wycombe get inspired from this and go on to win the League 2, League 1, Championship and ultimately the PL title in 2020 ! Afterall, we are experts at inspiring all the teams around us !

Really hate these topsy-turvy matches. It only shows how shyte both defences have been. This match proves that our fringe players and youngsters are not good enough. There is no glory in coming from 2-0 down to win 4-3 against a League 2 team at home, even if we played with 10 men for the last 20 minutes. It is really unacceptable to concede 3 goals at home to a League 2 team in the first place. In fact, Wycombe could have scored a few more goals if they had been more clinical.

Credit to Son, Janssen and Alli for the goals. But Son also wasted 2 or 3 easy chances to score earlier. His biggest blunder was failing to score when there was only a defender to beat after a goalie blunder in the first half. If he had scored, it could have improved our performance much earlier. Janssen did well to win and then score the penalty after coming on as the sub. But he really should have started this match. Alli took his goal really well after being set up by Dembele.

Really annoyed with Nkoudou and Sissoko. This was the chance for them to prove their worth but they were both poor. Expected more from Sissoko after his good performances earlier in the season. Instead we needed Alli and Dembele to come on and inspire us. This match proves that our defence is unreliable if we don't have Vertonghen or Alderweireld playing. Wimmer, Carlton-Vickers and Dier are too error-prone. Vorm did well in earlier Cup matches but he was not very convincing this time.

Despite the poor performance, glad we managed to progress to the FA cup Round 5. But we need to play much better if we want to go all the way to win the FA cup this season.

Dier was captain and the only word I can use to describe him is lackadaisical. The free kick that directly led to their third goal was truly abysmal, and Dier did not react how I'd want from such an error. He needs to up his game to be in the XI right now, simply not making the grade.

At that point I was fuming, as posted earlier. We had started doing 'Barcelona backflicks' several times instead of keeping it basic. There is a time and place to try neat tricks, but for me it isnt 2-2 when your are in a battle

This match showed me one thing

In Cup Football irrelevant of the opposition you need to still have 11 players playing as a team

We have changed too many player around too many times in these games and it is gonna bite us

I'm all for resting players and giving people a chance but you need the balance of "new entrants" with "settled first team players"

It's exactly why are out for me as Klopp just churned out a whole new side that looked like they have never met

It's rarely about ability if people are not familiar or settled

Overall the quality won over the hard work and brute force. Poch may have learned a lesson here (we will see)

All that matters now is we're in the next round

Hats off to Wycombe thought they played and fought well. Akinfenwa up front for them surprised me he does a job and won almost everything in the air against our defence. How he gets around the pitch I'll never know!

Don't get the disinterest in the cup on here when we clearly won't win the league, our chance was last season and it's gone for another generation. So 2nd and a cup win would be a great season.

Upto a few seasons ago, based on the strength of the teams around us and the money some have, my target for the season was always min 6th and a trip to Wembley of some sorts (LC FInal/FA Semi).
Expectations have changed a touch recently and yes, 2nd/3rd and a Cup win would be a great season, and we have put ourselves in a position where that has become more than a distant possibility

As you say you need the right balance of the first team with a couple of juniors, then rest some first team players when you are ahead....

Poch would have got slagged off big time if we had lost this tie..rightfully so as well..
I can,t understand lack of passion by some of our so called fans.

We have won sweet f all, in the last thirty years...
Unless you count a fudging league cup.

Anyway....come on you Spurs for the real fans...............
That would be 2 league cups actually which I do count and an FA cup. I count every competitive trophy we win the feeling of winning a trophy is amazing. I feel sorry for fans who don't get that.
