OMT ***Tottenham Hotspur v West Bromwich Albion***

Sissoko's was okay - there was that one horribly miscued shot that was luckily deflected behind (otherwise we'd have been treated to the sight of our record signing shooting so far wide that it goes out for a throw in), but otherwise, he did the basics well. Much like Janssen, only Sissoko doesn't have the additional responsibility if actually making runs in behind and offering options off the shoulder.

Important to not read too much into the fact that we "struggle to beat teams like West Brom". Not true, we should have easily scored 2 or 3 and been out of sight. The only thing to work on is being more clinical.
We didn't struggle to deal with their style of play. Only thing that was evident was that if you don't put a team away they can sucker punch and score themselves. That's just football

No, that's particularly Spurs football at the moment. Our finishing needs working on big time. Our goals to chances created is very poor IMO.
 
I didn't see the game. Obviously disappointing to not take the chance to go top, hopefully not the sign of things to come.

I think Dier will do fine filling in for Toby, hopefully Toby won't be out too long.

Phucking West Brom, they seem to be one of those teams for us at the moment.

At least, with City drawing, we are the same number of points from the top, still unbeaten and have a couple of big players to come back into the side soon and give us a big boost.
 
Going top at this stage is irrelevant.

It doesn't matter whether we're 1st or 4th at the moment. As long as we're in the mix points-wise, that's the important thing.

Of course, being in touch (max 3 points off top, for example) by definition means we'll be close to the top, but actual positions mean naff all in October.

It could be argued that being top adds pressure. I don't necessarily buy that but it's a consideration.

It'll come. He's young, he's new, he's adapting.
 
I thought we earned a creditable point today, Foster always reserves his best performances against us and that last minute free kick save would have beaten just about every other 'keeper. We're not good at breaking down teams and we really played into Pulis's gameplan today. Fingers crossed on Toby and we did boss the midfield but a lack of a cutting edge in the final third really handicaps us, Janssen is not the forward we were expecting to put it politely.

Jimmy Greaves was firstly a centre forward and secondly did it all the time

Chaldi is a winger and went missing most games last season when he got a chance

Poch was annoyed about that in the post-match presser, but I wonder if that's not an intrinsic part of the way we play, tbh. I said last season with Lamela, when he'd work really hard, get into great positions and then *just* mis-time a pass or a through-ball - essentially, all the closing down we do and the pace we play at means that, when we do get on the ball, our players are a) a bit more tired than players in less demanding systems, and b) are expected to nonetheless play it around quicker than players in more measured tactical setups.

When it comes to finishing chances, maybe that's why we're not putting away as many as we could be - it's just a consequence of our high-tempo style that players have less time and space to finish moves than their counterparts elsewhere, and that leads to a lot of misses.

I don't have an issue with him but people comparing him with Sissoko is odd... And then comparing him to Jimmy greaves

I'd argue Son is the replacement for Chaldi as he plays the same side
 
The determination we showed when 1-0, and Son on, was what we needed earlier. Poch entertaining title talk didn't help - too entitled - when we needed to go into the game hungry fighting back. But we made chances, and they defended manfully. Eriksen, Lamela, Sissoko, Davies, Alli not ruthless enough with their shots. None were easy, but at this level you have to take them. A lot of young players, bar Sissoko who's no goal scorer, and we showed a lack of maturity to kill them off. It's not a new problem.

How does Poch fix it? Son is a good finisher, better than Lamela in terms of attacking end product. Sissoko hasn't scored goals anywhere. Eriksen, so accurate in the past, doesn't find the corer of the goal enough. When we break or attack we don't seem to have a shape, a bit school yard in our movement - all sprinting without much plan often bunched together. So there is work to do - breaking, passing on the break, and being clinical. Taking emotion out of attacking, and working the ball into space and then finding the corner of the net.

Poch was a defender, and while we have some silky skills in attack, we need to hone our attacking play to be more clinical.
