*** OMT Tottenham Hotspur v The Cottagers ***

I just watched the whole game back.
We did look pretty solid in the first half, but didn't quite have enough cleverness or that spark of skill going forwards, although we had a few good situations that petered out.
We do make it look difficult to create good chances, but then I've seen other good teams go to Craven Cottage and struggle, they are usually well set up by their manager Silva.

We had a few headed chances which we couldn't get on target.

They've had a mix of good results and poor results if you look back since we drew with them in early December e.g. beating Brighton Cheatski Saudi Sportswashing Machine Forest (Leicester Wolves) and drawing with Arse and Pool, but also losing to Spam ManU Palace Brighton so it seems they get up for the big games.

At some point it felt like we needed the guile of Maddison to unlock the defence, but he was mostly poor or not passed to. Son is guilty of head down dribbling when the right pass would cut them open.

Frustrating. Maddison did chest a very sharp one into Solanke who shinned it over, these fine margins. If that had bounced straight in we would be talking about a famous victory, famous because it would be 3 straight away wins in the league for the first time since 2020.

I completely agree with those clips MotD pulled out; jogging from Tel, players SOMETIMES not full committing e.g. Spence was awesome, charging back and forth, winning challenges he had no right to, beating 2 or 3 players whilst lying down and being murdered, then he just switched off at the end and Sess scores a top bins worldy with his right foot, I mean since when has that been a thing. Also it was in the 30 seconds when Gray went to LCB and Davies went to RCB for no great reason.

I'm gonna assume Bergvall didn't attack Muniz for the goal because Gray and Bentancur were goal side and about to engage but neither actually did.

It is these bits for me with this coach. Our players CONSISTENTLY seem unsure of what their role is (what to do) in these key defensive situations. It leads to:
- passing on opposition players to nobody.
- costly hesitation
- last ditch sprints and lunges (that increse injury risk)

We clearly do not work on defensive shape and roles enough. Why do I think that?

1) because Postecoglu has said he doesn't work on these things and almost wears it like a badge of honour like he's discovered some hitherto undiscovered secret to winning. Football matches (remember his "There's a very good reason for that, which I'm not going to get into" quote?)

2) the evidence of my own eyes.

It even seaps into our attacking play on occasions? Remember a few weeks back two of our players running into each other and falling over in an attacking move where they both went to strike the same ball?

That's a lack of training on shape, structure, ROLE and zones of responsibility.

We consistently look like a total amateur hour mess in a way that no other PL team does. Only our superior quality has prevented us from finishing bottom of the league IMO.

I'm still on the fence with the clips. Sure, they're not a good look for the players but they also need to manage their output throughout the game. Nobody can run around at 100mph for 90s. So, rather than criticise their attitude, I'd say maybe they weren't very clever about - they didn't pick the right time to switch gears. That's to be expected from younger players, who don't necessarily read the game as well as more seasoned pros.

It's also part of a larger debate as, in my opinion, some players are asked to cover way too much ground these days. What you gain in structure and cohesiveness, you lose in technical ability and vision (as you need to be in your comfort zone in order to make the most of your skills), but that's another matter.

Back to the point, on any given action, anyone can be made to look lazy/bad but that's also part of Postecoglou's system: it's so high risks/high rewards that players need to be on top of their game pretty much all the time if you don't want situations like these to happen.

As for our attacking play, it was centered on our ability to press the opposition very high up the pitch and effectively. Now that we can't do that any more, we're exposed for what we are: a hard-working without a playing patterns and without the ability, vision and playmaking skills to orchestrate our attacking moves.

Edit: Now that I've reached the 'John Scales' level, I remember reading a piece at the time with a quote from the Badger saying: 'it's not often a player of such quality becomes available'.

i think high risk high reward was in the scottish league and maybe the first half of last season.
this season its been pretty much high risk low reward and the table doesn't lie.
from the start, angeball in the epl has been highly inefficient and it took just 10 game for the opposition to adjust and we've never really recovered since. just look at the results at the start of this season before the injuries set in.
