+++ OMT Tottenham Hotspur v Sunderland 12th April 2026 +++

100% it isn’t all down to the coach. And I agreed that finishing top half this year would be a decent achievement. You don’t go from 17th to 4th or 5th in the league. It very, very rarely happens even allowing for the extenuating circumstances.

However, I think there was a near unanimous belief that our finish last year was an anomaly attributable mainly to the fact we prioritized the Europa League. The vast majority of people expected a big improvement on last year's league campaign and didn’t expect to be in a relegation fight. That was certainly my view. I guess you could say that injuries played a big part last season and this but I’d still say we’ve underachieved hugely. And, at this point, we have a good chunk of our squad back albeit, admittedly, the combination of Kudus, Deki and Maddison being out does leave a big creative gap but this is pretty much it for the season (Bentancur is probably the only notable one to come back?).

So, my belief is that this team is underachieving and just needs that kick start to pick up enough points to get us out of trouble. I had hoped RdZ might provide that and the noises being made by the players seemed positive but yesterday was very disappointing. Of course, RdZ may well still prove to be the difference maker. I believe that he will but I’m not sure what I’m basing it on. If I take yesterday as a taster for the next 6 games, I’d have to say that all my assumptions about why we finished 17th and are currently 18th are wrong and we really are that bad. If that’s the case, GHod help us all.
I mean i have been banging on about this but i just did not see that our league finish was solely down to prioritising EL. After a certain point in time it was clear that the EL was prioritised but only because our league campaign was f*cked after following a similar downward form trend from the season before. That was red flag no. 1

Red flag no. 2 was that the players rotated in for the league games while first teamers were rested should have in theory be busting a gut to give the manager a selection headache for the prestigious EL semis and final games or at least used the opportunity to push for more first team appearances but performances were uniformly flat and devoid of organisation and sometimes effort indicating at best that there was a severe quality and mentality drop off in the second XI/wider squad and at worst there was a deep routed malaise running through the entire squad in terms of conditioning, mentality and ability to come in and do a job in the tactics preferred by the current head coach.

8 defeats in 14 league games between November 2024 and January 2025 (3 wins in 14) at the critical juncture of the season put paid to our league campaign although even into March we were playing strong teams that were nevertheless struggling to avoid defeat in the PL, e.g. lineup for 2-0 defeat to Fulham on 16/03/25: Vicario / Udogie Davies Romero Spence / Bentancur Bissouma Gray / Tel Solanke Johnson

Its head in sand from fans to pretend that the massive red flags of a huge slide in league results weren't there over the last 3 seasons. I will do a trend analysis when i have got time and post it on here.

In typical Spurs fashion we will win at Stamford Bridge but other results will go against us meaning we get relegated anyway.

My theory is we will win our last two games, once it’s mathematically impossible for us to stay up, and we’ll be relegated either by goal difference or by one point.

I tell you what makes me laugh...the usual suspects are getting a slagging in these parts, yet Connor Gallagher is (by comparison) getting away with one. He was so poor today, offered absolutely nothing on either side of the ball, and was moving as if in molasses to get onto the scene when Sunderland scored. What a total waste of money he has been, another pearler of an example of the disastrous January thw Tweedle Twins 'presided' over.
He cannot start next week. Right?
To be fair, it's easy to forget Gallagher exists
