I agree with you that we were definitely braver in some of our play. Something concerning though is that we ALWAYS try to play out from the back, even when the only pass the goalkeeper can make is a dangerous one in behind our fullback who sometimes then is facing his own goalline with two or three players converging on him. When only that ball is on then I think the keeper has to go long, at the very least that might turn the opposition as well as causing them to consider whether they continue to commit so many players to their press (Liverpool pressed us with zero consequence of an early ball in behind their high line yesterday, which meant that they had even numbers and sometimes even outnumbered us as we were trying to play it out).
Its very noble trying to always play out from the back but not particularly sensible. Especially when the opposition are overcommitting to the press as Liverpool were quite often on Sunday.
With Richy in the side, yes. With the frontline we had out there first-half, what's the point? In fact, I applaud trying to play out. The biggest issue was lack of bravery in the whole principle. You offered a great example re: Porro/Bentancur. There are so many instances of that since we beat Villa 4-0. In fact, that over-commital to the press could've been a gift for us. It's well worth debating that had Maddison started the game we might well have exploited that more.
It is where the 6 is vital in the sense of they have to take more risks, ditto I think we have some real issues with playing at pace right now (because of this partially). For me, the long ball we don't play enough are the diagonals quickly and in behinf for Johnson. With Werner out I think Ange is stuffed if he wants to accomodate Deki uptop as it renders all three forwards relatively ineffective in this system. It has to be Son on the left, Richy centre and Johnson on the right.
