Best lead singer there ever was.

Such a sad story. I knew him from the first album and he was a vibrant, fun, sarcastically funny and cool guy. Saw a lot of him the following few years as they made their climb, and he was great…then you saw the slide happen. It was weird. No-one was able to do anything because some of them were in their own stuff and worlds. The whole Mike Starr thing really blew a hole in them I think spiritually…by the end it was just so gut-wrenchingly inevitable. He could not get off that train, and he just became a total recluse. It was grim.

I think their first two albums and Jar of Flies are fantastic.

And I've been listening alot to these two albums lately, if anybody here enjoys metal (METARU!!!!11), these are definitely some of the best from last year.

No hip-hop fans on GG anymore?

For Xmas my sister had a t-shirt made for me which is just a black T with the first verse from 'Excursions' by A Tribe Called Quest written on the front. All caps white writing with 'Abstract' in red.

"Back in the days when I was a teenager,
Before I had status and before I had a pager,
You could find the Abstract listening to Hip Hop,
My pops used to say it reminded him of Be-Bop"

If you watch the Michael Rapaport documentary Q-Tip is wearing one but its impossible to find/not available so she had one made exactly the same for me!

So yes, I do like a little hippity hoppity every now and again. :)

Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty by Big Boi is one of the best hip hop/rap albums I've ever listened to. I know it's old and you've probably heard it, but it's excellent, especially while stoned or k'd out. Shutterbug, General Patton and Turns Me On are my fave three tracks.

Loving Asgeir right now but I'm disappointed in the album. Their studio/radio recordings and live they are excellent. A perfect blend of electro and analog. When you have a singer with a voice like Asgeir's you don't need to layer, **** about, just let the guy sing and on the album the arrangements feel a bit over produced which is a shame. IMHO the album version of Going Home is just not on the same planet.

I happened to dig out my Mad Season CD to lend to a friend The other week, as she'd introduced me to Temple of the Dog. Cornell and Vedder's vocals just seem somewhat underwhelming in comparison to Staley.

Scott Weiland from the Stone Temple Pilots was probably my next favourite grunge lead singer.

I think what some people forget about Layne Staley is that his voice was assisted hugely by having Jerry Cantrell harmonizing on most of their songs.

Cornell is hands down the best vocalist of that whole scene.

He might be technically the best singer/vocalist, but the most engaging and unique voice was Kurt Cobain IMO.

Mulletperm - 2 questions:

1. Are you going to Soundwave or BDO?

2. Is your name Mulletperm because you have a mullet - with false curls?

So many good bands at Soundwave this year. I think it gets better each year.

1. Fraid not mate. I'm popping back to the UK in Feb and get back into Perth on the day of Soundwave, BDO doesn't really appeal apart from PJ.
2. Hahah no - when I was in my teens (in the mid-80's) I wanted to look like James Hetfield (as below). I had the long-hair (still do) but not the curl. So asked my Mum's mate, who was a hairdresser, to sort it. I ended up with some awful tight curl perm/mullet. Was awful.
