Dont think this will be interesting for many people but thought i'd post it anyway.

I work in a restaraunt in a trendy part of Munich and Schweinsteiger is a regular here. He was in yesterday again and sat in my section with his missus and a couple of mates as well as Markus Babbel. I had a chat with him for a few minutes about football; he asked where i come from blah blah blah I said England and that I was a Tottenham fan, and he said "ah cool, respect - the Spurs from White Hart Lane." He reckons we're well known for having the best atmosphere in England along with Liverpool and said he hopes to play there before the new stadium comes along.

His mate added "yeah you haven't played there because they don't get Champs League often enough" and he half defended us- "nah nah they were in it a couple of years ago and should've been again last season." It was just like chatting to a football fan really. Proper nice guy, his missus is always pretty friendly too.

You can tell by what he orders that he really looks after himself, and I was wondering if his actual love for the game and knowledge / attitude may have helped (along with talent of course) in getting him to the top. Sat in a street cafe having a bite to eat with your friends and your girlfriend whilst chatting to the waiter about football seems a million miles away from getting in fights on VIP tables at 03.00 am in London.... I wonder if half our players could even point to Hamburg on a map for example!!
 
I am impressed that he even knows we are trying to build a new stadium! There aren't many high profile British footballers who would behave like this with a fan... although to be fair you were serving him, and he was therfore being civil... can't imagine many of our own players having such an intimate knowledge of say, German football beyond Dortmund and Bayern tbh.

I don't know... real ITK and not in Transfers or Random! ;)
 
Love this. I lived in Turkey back in the early 90's and all the footy fans knew who Spurs were and what they were about.

Travelled through SE Asia during our CL run and when I was wearing the top got loads of locals wanting to talk 'the spur' with me.

We may not be a top, top club by recent reputation, but we are a renowned club. Maybe helped more by players that have donned our colours rather than success. But, Forest and Villa have won the European Cup and are not held in the same regard as us worldwide.

I'd hazard a guess that players/agents/fans know about our plans for the future because we are building something very promising round these parts.


Or, Levy made an offer for Bastian and he's being polite after turning down our promise of trust and wonderment at The Lane...

In terms of the other points made re: player respectability. That is something I feel is drilled into players at an early age in the continent more so than our domestic players.
 
im sure Bastian knows all about us after his spot kick miss in the CL final contributed to us to missing out on CL football

id have taken a lickle p!ss in his beer and served it to him with a smile

Which area of Munich btw? I stayed in the Lehel area last summer and it was excellent.

I think the attitude is more common amongst German players and their football culture as a whole. The Bayern players celebrate Oktoberfest with fans and the public, they go out as normal people and the prices are more in line with most people's salaries. It's a more fan-focused game.

I think you're right, strikes me as a true professional. IIRC he started his career as a more creative attacking midfielder, often playing in wide positions. In my opinion he would have made a good, but far from great, attacking midfielder. Instead of being happy with that, playing for a big club in Germany, frequent caps, the lifestyle he pushed himself. Must have taken a lot of hard work to get both physically and defensively ready for that deeper central midfield role, but he did that and now he's one of the better players in the world in his position and an easy first choice both for Bayern and Germany.

Yeah Lehel is a nice part of town. The place I work is in the Glockenbachviertel.
 
Great story, thanks for posting.

Still have a bit of residual loathing for Schweinsteiger (2011-2012, you ****!), but it's refreshing to see footballers with their heads screwed on: just enjoying a meal, interacting with ordinary people, nothing major. It's apparently fairly common in Germany as well, so yet another reason to envy them: a football culture that isn't entirely based on flash and celebrity, with players still accessible to the fans that pay their wages.
 
Good story, seems like a down to earth lad.

So is his missus, Sarah Brandner, as nice looking in the flesh as she appears on TV? As I remember her being picked out by the cameras in the crowd at a Euro 2008 game and she was very easy on the eye!

Had another chat with him the other day again. About Spurs and Bayern/Pep etc. It wasn't earth shattering necessarily but interesting none the less.

If anyone is interested in what he had to say (i wont write it here as it involved a couple of players) then drop me a PM.
