As well as his work with the German youth sides, remember Freund was also Nigeria's assistant manager for a spell, working alongside Berti Vogts.

He also has other experience of coaching adults in his 15 months as AVB's assistant, something Timmeh had never done till Xmas.

A spell as Nigeria's assistant manager? He was Bertie Vogts assistant during the AFON which was a 3 week tournament. Nigeria were knocked out in the quarter finals and so therefore participated in the tournament for 2 weeks. I really don't think that was long enough to gain a huge amount of knowledge. Just because Steffan seems like a nice chap it doesn't mean that he would make a better management alternative than Tim.

It's still infinitely more experience coaching adults than YTS

And its infinitely harder to coach the unfinished article than 2 weeks as an assistant to full time professionals at international level.

Freund has no more exposure to top quality coaching than Sherwood does.

Of course he does - he's worked with some very good managers. YTS is 'Arry's son's mate.

Just reading all the little bits and pieces online and predictably we are being linked to many Italian coaches. Apparently Baldini has put forward a selection of names to Levy including Di Matteo, Prandelli and a certain Mr Spalletti.

From the article....According to agent Sandor Varga, the ex-Zenit coach is ready to coach in the Premier League and feels that Spalletti can adapt very easily: “Working at Zenit showed that Spalletti can calmly adapt to another country and get results. I wouldn't be surprised if Spalletti managed Tottenham. He knows how to work with stars, which is very important to their current chairman, Daniel Levy”.

Without meaning to sound negative it does read like his agent fishing for work and of course we are most likely the biggest club in the EPL with a managerial vacancy this summer (I still think Moyes will be given time but Sherwood will be off). The Russian media are apparently linking him to the post if Sherwood gets the chop.

On a side note, I also read Vertonghen's comments to skysports yesterday, “I think we do have the players to qualify for the Champions League and I hope we can achieve it next year.”

Now a few things spring to mind. Firstly, over the last few weeks we have heard nothing more from him than comments regarding his future at the club and how he will wait to see how the season goes before making any decisions but now his tune has changed. What has happened in the last week to make him think that another year at Tottenham is worth it? I would think that as one of our teams senior pros he most likely wants to know what the game plan is for the club and it wouldn't suprise me if he or his agent has sought talks with the clubs heirarchy recently. What is the probability that he has been told something that has made him want to stick around, something like who our next manager is?

I know I'm likely looking too far into things but this change in tune made my mind race through many things. Maybe we all ready have our man lined up.

I do not want an Italian manager it sounds like someone who will be mates with Baldini and will probably give him a kick back for getting him the nice highly paid job at Tottenham. Nope lets get in LVG he has the experience he has the reputation. Sherwood could turn out to be a good coach but he has to do it in the lower leagues before getting the chance in the prem.

Also agree it was more positive from verts there maybe his agent told him no other clubs want him.

You are wonderful evidence, a prime specimen and testament of the power of self-delusion through repetition and force of will.
A remarkable case study.

You absolutely utterly must believe the words you say to be true, there can be no other explanation. Fascinating.

if we can get him, it has to be LVG...

Why though?
Because he's the name most mentioned.
We should try to get the best candidate we can, not just the first good name that throws his hat in the ring.

Personally I want Ancellotti. He could be sacked given the ultimate humiliation of Atletico winning the league against of Real.
And what about Antonio Conte, Diego Simeone, De Boer or Spalletti?

I'd still take LVG over all of the others you've mentioned. Simeone comes close but I doubt he'd want to come to us.

Carlo Ancelotti - impossible. Even if, even if Madrid sack him - which they won't - he'd go straight into the Man Utd job. I'm certain of it. He is destined for bigger things than Spurs now. We should have gone for him when he left Chelsea, but that ship has truly sailed.

Antonio Conte - possibly, Juve aren't what they were, but he is Juve through and through. His Juve record is fantastic, sure, but they are the best team in a poor Serie A (until this season where Roma and Napoli look good also) I doubt he'd leave them for us though - would certainly take him though.

Diego Simeone - the one worth fighting tooth and nail for IF and I repeat IF we're prepared to give someone 2, 3 or even 4 years to get it right. He'd need time, as a young coach, but I think he'd have us playing some great football and could bring some big names too - only downside is, Athletico won't let him go easily, similar situation to Conte really.

Frank De Boer - done well with Ajax, brought through some great players, is charismatic, a good leader of mean, seems tactically astute, but is the one plying his trade in the weakest league of the candidates. Is he worth passing up so another team can find out what he's all about? I think so - based on nothing but a hunch.

Luciano Spalletti - I admit to not knowing a great deal about this guy, other than his Roma side were very, very good to watch. He could be just the man for the job, but I can't help but think I'd be a bit underwhelmed if he was our new boss, still, at least he isn't Tim Sherwood?

Louis Van Gaal - The chosen one. The man has won a trophy EVERY season. Every one! In 3 different countries, with 4 different clubs. Sure, Ajax, Bayern and Barca were 3 of them. But there's a reason he got those jobs. There's a reason Carlo Ancelotti has managed Milan, Chelsea, PSG and Real Madrid. A reason Rafa Benitez has managed Valencia, Liverpool, Inter, Chelsea and Napoli. A reason Guardio managed Barca and Bayern. A reason Mourinho has manged Chelsea, Inter, Real and Chelsea again. These guys are the best in the world at what they do - and the biggest clubs fight tooth and nail for them. Van Gaal, if he wants it should the job. He should also get whatever else he wants. Look at his record. He's won 19 trophies as a manager. Tottenham Hotspur has won 29 trophies in its entire history. People that want to pass on him need to get some perspective.

If you have any other basis to suggest how YTS got his career started I'd be interested to hear it.

yeah i can see that.....i have a lot of time for Carlo

however, i think Real are on for the La Liga/CL double this season. I think theyll do it

no one, neither you nor i can predict the future...so we evaluate and take calculated risks and they are just that...risks. based on the fact that he has an immense pedigree in several of the biggest leagues, certainly more than those 4 names you mention combined, is an authoritarian, instills discipline, his teams attempt to play good football, likes a challenge and has the strength of character much like fergie or mourinho, i would take a punt on him. of course, things can go tits up, odds are they will, but when someone of his caliber and experience is available and willing, we should take that calculated risk and give him a chance.

and NOT because his name is most often mentioned..

just read this..=D>

The idea we could get Simeone is pretty delusional. Why would he leave Athletico for us?

because Ossie was his his hero when growing up and its always been his dream to represent the white of Tottingham

I'm not anti Van Gaal but some of this stuff if made up and other cherry picked.
He hasn't won a trophy every season. In fact he's only won 3 trophys since the 90s.
He hasn't been in a decent job for more than 2 years since then neither.

He isnt gonna stay around to built anything that's my problem with him.
