Next Manager?

I disagree. I think that we have the core of a good squad here but Mourinho has been unable to get more than the sum of its parts and by alienating key members of it, has backed himself into a corner. His tactics have also left the weakest part of the team horribly exposed.

I think that three smart signings and a progressive manager and we are in a good position to finish in the top four again next season.

By most accounts we had a progressive manager previously, and I personally think that the last months of that reign were worse than what we are seeing at the moment.

The squad is a problem whoever the manager is, they are accepting of failure, I think some of them embrace it.

We could bring SAF out of retirement, or Clough back from the dead, but this group would still fall short.

We've seen significant investment in the team over the last couple of years. This isn't the same team that was failing under Poch.

Talking about the end of Poch's time is deflecting from the issues that we face now. It isn't working right now. We need a new manager who can unite the squad, use the resources available well and improve players.

Gallardo - he took over one of Argentina's oldest clubs, River Plate, at one of their lowest-ever ebbs - they had been relegated for the first time a few years earlier (Lamela was actually a part of the squad that got relegated). Since his appointment, he's gone on to revolutionize them, returning them to the top of Argentinian football. In the process, he became the most successful manager in their history in just six years, winning the South American equivalent of the Champions League twice.
Barcelona have long been interested in him, but the timing was never quite right, and he's pretty loyal to River. But he's an absolutely masterful coach, who will take Europe by storm when he returns (he was here as a player, with Monaco and PSG).

Marcelino - has had a long career in Spain, and has improved every side he's managed. His last job was with Valencia, where, despite utterly chaotic ownership, he won them their first trophy in yonks and got them into the CL. He was sacked after disagreements with their crazy owner, and took over Bilbao, where he's led them to a cup final at the first time of asking.

Other potentially left-field appointments include Niko Kovac (Frankfurt, Bayern, now Monaco) and Adi Hutter (Frankfurt). Erik ten Hag also a pretty good candidate - he's done well in the Eredivisie, but that's to be expected. More impressive are his consistent long runs in Europe, getting to the EL final in 2018, the CL semi in 2019, and now the EL semi final in 2021.
That's a more impressive trophy haul than I realised for Gallardo. Two concerns though, one, River Plate are one of the two richest clubs in Argentina, wouldn't be the case with us and two, how would he settle into English/European management with bigger players etc. Still someone worth considering.

Really? So we have to compete with City, United, Liverpool, Chelsea ... its going to take more than 3 smart signings and a "progressive" manager ... perhaps three miracle signings and a magician of a manager ... I'd agree.

Just out of pie in the sky discussion currently going on ... who would be this manager and the signings be out of interest?

I don't think that our squad is significantly worse than United or Chelsea and Liverpool as going to go through a period of transition. We should have finished in the too four this season and with smart additions this summer, that should be our aim again. We are where we are because Mourinho has mismanaged the squad.

Our squad is not on par with any of those teams mentioned ... not a patch its glaring to see that only kane and Son genuinely walk into those teams, Ndombele, PEH, GLC and Reguilon as good as they are do not walk into top four teams.

Lloris, Sanchez, Alderwierald, Aurier, sissoko, lamely, Lucas, Dier, Rodon are mid table players.

We do not have the finances to buy 3 top notch players, and soo much dead wood to flog.

It's going to be a few painful years watching this team build up to be genuinely top four ... however we do have a few x factors in Sessegnon and Skipp. We have some outstanding young players also, but again it will be wrong to hang your hat on them.

And this manager? Can you suggest one that can add three players of this value to this mob and get us across the line ...

This is all compounded with the other four teams plus Everton, Arsenal, West ham etc all adding to their squad's.

Its amazing that s ome fans can not see that a lot of the same players who downed tools under Poch are still at the club and are now doing the same under Jose. Those who think we only need 2/3 players are fooling themselves IF they really believe that.

Don't really see that anyone has downed tools. A few players obviously have a prob with the manager, but that is of Mourinhos making e.g. treatment of Dele, Bale has a few good performances then a bad 45 mins (along with all the team) and gets discarded, Toby and Aurier called out in the press and it turns out Mourinho is telling blatant lies, hard for players like that not to have a problem with the manager. Players are playing with fear, again down to the manager.

Also there's 9 players that weren't there under Poch, it's a different squad now.

Get a proper manager in and a lot of the issues go. Yes we need some signings, but if you don't think we have a better squad than the likes of West Ham...

Well Stop! Hammer time but i can not agree with you at all, we have a large number of players here who downed tools under Poch and they are still here. That kind of player in the dressing room is toxic and until they are cleared out a new manager will still have the same problems that have exsited under two managers now.

But as i say Stop! Hammer time.

Yup, it's just about opinions, we don't know what's going on in the dressing room. Mourinho has caused issues at the end with nearly every club he's been with, for me, he's the toxic one

Sure you can say that, but a defence with Dier and Sanchez is not going anywhere fast, throw temperamental players like Aurier into the defence and a rapidly declining Lloris .... we may as well say it how it is. This team or squad is not good enough, no manager can polish this turd. None.

Three signings would be the minimum and even then they would have to be 2 xCBs and 1x GK

So you think the same players gave their all for Poch at the end?

I think just about everyone has stated that we need new CBs and Lloris will need to be replaced in the next couple of seasons. That does not mean the full squad is crap and needs replacing

Again with the Poch, he's gone, it's about the issue now. I'll bite, it goes both ways, Poch wasn't giving his all for his final season, it cuts both ways.

But can you not see that IF some of those players let Poch down ( and most fans think they did) then having that type of player with that attitude in the dressing room will ( has done) persist under any manager.

I am not trying to absolve Jose from the situation but those players need to be shipped out so they do not do the same under the new man.

No one is saying the FULL squad is crap but as long as we have those who were a problem under Poch and Jose then we will still have problems.

For me, Poch and Jose are data points on the same side the argument here.

We have a squad of technically exceptional players without the mental strength to execute on their ability.

I think that we have a lot of very good players who are currently under performing because the team is dysfunctional under this manager and is massively under performing. I agree that we have quite a few players that need moving on, some more urgently than others.

I think that most managers could get more out of this squad than Mourinho is. To look for proof of this, you only need to see what Moyes has done at West Ham this season with a vastly inferior squad. I think that we are a top quality centre back and right back away from being a very good side.

By way of encouragement, we should look to Mourinho's second spell at Chelsea. He was sacked with them flirting with relegation having won 4 games in 16. That summer Chelsea brought in Kante, Luiz and Alonso and went on the win the Premier League the following season.

I get the Mourinho not getting the best out of these players, but these players don't fit into his mentality or style of play.

Any manager that is due to come in will have to sell and buy a lot more than three players in key positions.

I dont think you can compare Chelsea to spurs, that Chelsea squad still had players that knew how to win titles and cups, experience and cohesion. This current mob have done nothing to suggest that they would replicate anything close to that.

Too simple to put it on Mourinho and not the players, they are not winners or fighters.

Pochettino almost got the leopard to change its spots but that year of transfer stagnation lead to a painful gestation which has seen the rebirth of the sexy we’ve known all too well these past 4 decades.

It is not much of a stretch to suggest that their form during this calendar year has been that of relegation battlers. In fact, no Premier League side has lost more matches in all competitions than Pochettino's side (18).

With 25 points from their last 24 games, Tottenham have been in relegation-battling form for the last nine months.
