Played 90 minutes against Bayern Munich in a game which Shalke got a draw. Too good a player to just let go IMO. Get him back in place of Tom Carroll. Plenty of games to play this season, we'll regret not having enough in reserve if by April we're down to bare bones.

He isn't coming back, Poch doesn't want him and when that's the case the player is done at Spurs.
Why exactly who knows? personally I think his contract negotiations plus his early season performances put him on Poch's list and now he's done.

Squad member. Have you seen the amount of games we've got coming up? One injury to Kane or Dembele (both have history) and and who would you suggest steps in? Winks alone isn't up to it. Dier is needed in defence.

Sounds good in theory, but by all accounts Bentaleb wasn't a player prepared to just "step in"...
That may well be but he is a natural cover/ long term replacement for Dembele, he can also cover LB, LWB and has had his best moments as an AM for Schalke. Are we sure we can't rehabilitate him, especially when we seemed to have considered buying Kessie as another mid?

Bentaleb knows as well as anyone that a year can be a long time in the career of a footballer. He went from one of the first names on the team sheet to fringes of the squad in less than six months. He can tinkle around with Shalke if he wants but he's contracted to Spurs and we aren't exactly doing badly these days, new stadium, Champions League more often than not, amazing training ground, coach and squad. Hell of a lot easier for him to convince Poch from London than Germany.

Maybe I took your reference to him coming back in Tom Carroll's place too literally. My question was based on the fact that Carroll as a squad member wasn't even making our bench so taking Carroll's place wouldn't be palatable for Bentaleb.
We let Carroll go, so Poch must be happy with the cover he has.
For the record, if Bentaleb could be brought back into the fold I'd have no issue with that at all, far from it. But IF the rumours about him insisting on game time and giving ultimatums are in any way true, then I find it hard to see a way back in for him.

Nothing per se. But if the player insists on it and the manager won't grant it, then it's likely to lead to a parting of ways somewhere along the line.
Mason and Chadli both left because they wanted more regular first team football but their situations seemed a whole lot more amicable than that of Bentaleb. (I don't recall Poch saying they weren't in his plans).
Poch is on record as saying a player signs a contract to train and then it's up to the manager to decide whether he plays. So by extension, a player demanding game time is questioning the authority of the manager.
Of course we all want players who are keen to play week in week out and not be happy to idly pick up a wage packet. It just seems that Bentaleb's approach to this put him at odds with Poch. Which is a great shame.

Bentaleb was terrible in his rare chances last season. His chances were rare because he lost his place due to injury so it was a bit unfortunate for him. However it feels to me like Poch needs the guys to train hard and be ready to step in when required, he doesn't want to wait for weeks to build up form. Same problem Wimmer is having right now.
Seems a little harsh as ideally you'd want more patience with young players, but the standards at our club are higher now.

Aye however life is not a set of rules and players need game time to develop themselves. Training time can only help to a point.

I think that the point Poch was making is that players have to earn their place in the first team by hard work on the training ground. If Bentaleb wasn't happy with this, it was right for us to move him on.

I love that philosophy. It keeps players on their toes and is part of the reason Poch is so successful in improving players. Sadly the downside is that some players will not be happy sitting around waiting for their chance. Bentaleb and Siggurdson are the only ones we have let go who, imho, could have staked a claim for a starting place. Even Chadli,who I liked a lot , has been surpassed by Son.
