Moussa Sissoko

He's a Spurs player in great form, so I find this thread title to be in really poor taste.

We've seen the difference the support from fans in the stadium has made.. It'd be nice if GG could give him some too.

Very much doubt that anyone in the squad looks at message boards, or cares what they say. This is the internet of the elderly. Anyone young enough to play foorball for a living wouldn’t look beyond Instagram and Twitter, even if they were vanity searching after their best performance to date.

I'm not saying he'll read it though. It's about the precedent it sets.. If you don't think sentiment can spread from message board to the stadium well I'm sorry, but you're dead wrong.

If it was an opposition player I could tolerate the jokey thread names, but for our own players it's just poor form.

This board is far too small to spread sentiment about anything. It’s a collection of obscure private jokes about badgers and custard; mainstream Spurs fandom won’t be infected by its oddities. Further, you could take everyone who posts on here and on TFC and on SC and COYS and whatever other sites are still limping along, and you could fit us into a single block of Wembley. With our wives and children. Even acting in concert, even with the wittiest chant imaginable, even with valid opinions about formations, or in any equally implausible circumstance, message board sentiment is irrelevant.

Are you saying that we in GGWorld, and our opinions, carry no weight in the so-called real world? Does that mean that a poorly formatted OMT does not impact the result of the team? Does that mean that players can't instinctively intuit a lack of cellular-level support on a server somewhere in a basement in the middle of nowhere and perform (or not) accordingly? And you forgot about the more-obscure-by-the-day Bassong suspended reference.

Everytime someone takes the tinkle out of poor old Forest all we get are his mum, cousin and agent telling us all what naughty boys we have been.

Guys it's a forum, Forest doesn't come on here, he doesn't care what we say, we are just taking the Mick, which is more than can be said for some you posting about other Spurs players that are apparently fair game.

Just chill

Please note, I'm calling it now. This geezer will become a Spurs legend. 10 years for now we'll still be chanting his name. Because, in spite of all the abuse he's had this....

What I like about him is his heart and passion. It would have been easy for him to take all the criticism, and there’s been a LOT, to heart and to disappear. Instead, he turns up and does all that he can. He really isn’t the most technical player but he puts in a shift and I like that about him.

Woah there with the second question. No disrespect to the OMT gods was meant. None at all. The outcome of games is entirely down to their happiness or otherwise with the threads offered in their name. That is unarguable. Heresy on that score would be unthinkable. It’s just that there aren’t many humans who look at these boards.

Better offer those gods another badger now, though. Perhaps we should ask them for team news too.

I think the risk is fairly contained, as it seems that all but circa 13 posters have left here for the fighting côck forum, some years ago...

I agree that this board in isolation is small, but I also think the idea that narrative and hive mind kind of does carry some weight. Sissoko was seen as laughing stock material way longer than his performances actually merited it, but because the general vibe is that he sucks, that kind of carries over. Almost every other player got lots of praise, lots of support, lots of understanding if they had a bad game. Sissoko never did.

To be fair to the away fans, they’ve always been great. They offer support and truly get behind the team, and didn’t treat Sissoko any differently. But the home fans treat him as a laughing stock. I still remember Sissoko coming on against Dortmund at Wembley and some kid, probably no more than 15 years old, was giving it the ‘yeah let’s get Sissoko on, that will make a massive difference’ and really dialling the sarcasm up to 11, while looking around at all the blokes in the block giving him knowing nods, as if everyone’s in on the big joke. I just thought...fudge you kid. And most of the blokes generally only need one stray pass (which literally ever player makes multiple times a game) to stand up on their feet and shout ‘fudging HELL SISSOKO!!!!’. It was pressure and scrutiny that no other player needed to deal with, because every single other player got the benefit of our support, which is so important when we aren’t the richest club, we always had the idea that we were one club pulling in the same direction, fans and players all in it together. And as the England players have alluded to over the summer, that stuff helps.

So I don’t think this thread title is actually going to affect much, because luckily most people are now on the side of ‘oh, he’s actually quite good’ and this is more an ironic nod to past criticism. But I will always maintain it was unsavoury at best for the majority of the fan base to single one player out, and it isn’t the first time we have done it. I’m not sure if other clubs do it to the same extent, where they literally treat one player like a laughing stock. And I think the jokes can take root, from forums, to Twitter, to pubs, to the stands. Narratives get established, a hive mind develops and not many people want to be the one to say something different, because everyone is having fun being a part of the group. Luckily now the narrative is shifting, and long may it stay positive. Because whether or not you thought Sissoko was rubbish or average or quite good, no one can tell me singling him out like the way he had to deal with was in any way helpful. Particularly when we’ve given other players who have clearly struggled in the past unwavering support.

message board sentiment is irrelevant.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. You think the misogynist 'incel' clam from the states who shot up a yoga class wasn't involved in an online community?

It's an extreme comparison but you get where I'm coming from.

Stop giving people a lame excuse to behave like cretins. It's poor form and in bad taste, at the very least.

He's been the player to seemingly bring a level of solidarity to the side. We can all see his deficiencies, but he's performing in spite of them and doing so well.

The thing that Sissoko has always had, especially last season when he was putting in decent performances but without quite the quality on the ball he’s now showing, is that he wins his duels. It’s something I think Poch has spoken about recently, and other players too, but the idea of winning your direct battle is so important at the top level.

Sissoko has always sniffed out danger and rarely gets beaten one on one. Even when he wasn’t showing enough on the ball he had that, and it meant we had a really good opportunity of being solid and getting the result with him on the pitch. I’d say Aurier, despite the occasional brain farts, is actually pretty similar in this regard. Get the silly penalties out of his system and he’s actually really good in his direct battles, in a way Trippier isn’t.

You can be a physical player and still lose concentration, or you can be a smaller player and still win your duel more often than not. The important thing is to win it. It’s one of the biggest reasons for our consistency I would say, that we have players that believe they are going to come out on top of any situation with their direct opponent. And Sissoko has played his part in that for a while now.
