Mousa Dembele

Although Dembele was OK today I prefer Dier in the holding role. Dier is a cleaner, safer tackler, and busier too. Dembele is a bit languid. If he was a bit more confident about taking on players and shooting I'd rather he was a back up #10 as slowing down play in their penalty area or holding the ball up there isn't so much of a problem as doing the same thing in midfield.

Poch has always played with quick incisive passers in central midfield whenever one has been available. I like Dembele but he does not fit this criteria.

But that wasn't because of Dembele today

Dembele came in and did his defensive job to an exceptional standard hence why Hugo made no saves of note and we kept a clean sheet

The issue was a lack of shots from others in attack and we didn't create enough considering we were the better side. Again not Dembeles job today
 
Moussa was excellent today. Simply top class. He's not most people's cup of tea on this site, but I think he has been underused by Pochettino. And he showed today that he can do the job as a designated defensive midfielder which is important. I was worried about Dier being our only option in that role. His defending was excellent, a number of great tackles and intelligent positioning. His ability to hold on the ball in tight situations is also very important against teams that try to put us under pressure in our own half. We know he has weaknesses when it comes to his passing ability/creativity, but in a lot of games he can be a very important player for us. Against tough opposition, pressing sides and in difficult away matches, I always feel more at ease when he is playing.
 
He was excellent today and did everything that the position dictated from him and more. Under pressure he gets away with the ball with ease. And can dribble himself out of very very tough positions. We all know he is too slow in passing, and hesitant around the box. That is why Jol moved him into midfield and why Sherwood and Earlier Poch attempts to get him further up the pitch are a waste of time.

He was so impressive today. The ball looks glued to his feet. As others have said, it was up to Lamela, Clinton, Kane and Eriksen today to get the goals along with Alli. This was the perfect game for Mason with his high action. I still really like Dembele and if we keep him we have to use him in this position. And that is it. Either that or sell him.

Spurs were also without their best three central midfield options: Eric Dier, Nabil Bentaleb and Ryan Mason. The makeshift combination of Mousa Dembele and Dele Alli doesn't offer the defensive discipline or midfield control required against a side playing with two central playmakers, and in the opening stages Spurs simply struggled to get into the game.
They improved once the tempo dropped. Dembele was able to ease past less intense opposition challenges, while Alli's consistently excellent first touch bought him time in the centre of the pitch.
 
Can you imagine how frenetic that midfield battle would have been had Dier and Mason played today. They are two players who really do raise the intensity of our performance.

Dembele is a fine footballer and did well today, but as others have said has a very different set of tools to others.

I think it was vital to have someone there like Dembele who could calm things down and who coudl actually receive the ball under pressure without losing it.
 
I thought Dembele was excellent today and soes not deserve to be dropped for our next match which is interesting because Dier has to start next match
 
Dembele didn't do anything I haven't seen him do before - strong in the tackle, impossible to get the ball off of, beating players at will etc. One thing I did notice as different was that he seemed fitter, getting around the pitch better,didn't look as cumbersome as he can do....
 
Personally I think Dembe was brilliant today. It is a top class player - not world class - but very good of PL-standard player in there. In the past he's been a bit hit and miss, but this season - also before he got injured - I think he has shown a bit more of what is needed in a Poch team. Running a lot, winning tackles, passing it more quickly. And his body strenght is a joy to watch.
I would still like to see him be a bit more prolific and pick out key passes in the offensive zone, but I'm happy with his contribution to the side.
And: Dembe and Alli doing it well today, creates even more competition in the middle of the park. Can't be bad, we have a lot of games to play in the coming months :)

I'm looking forward to seeing Dembele when he is better than OK then! He was at least as good today as Dier has been this season putting in some beautifully timed tackles and looked pretty damned busy to me, yet seems to get a rough ride by so many. What the fudge does "cleaner" mean or matter? There's a serious agenda amongst many on this MB - some players will get away with average performances (Kane as an example) yet others will be scrutinised so harshly!
Got to love Shaney's flimflam about Poch's team blah blah blah too in one of the other threads - if that doesn't prove there's an agenda then nothing will. I'm all for people having an opinion but when it's this laughable it's just embarassing!
 
I think cleaner is diers give and go

Dembele doesn't do that much. What he does is beat half the opposition before giving a relatively simple pass

I don't think he has the clever pass in his locker, but then how many players have what he has dribbling wise or ball retention wise?!?

Dier has been a revolution but plays the role differently to Dembele but as effectively
