And people were worried that, without Jeremy Paxman, the BBC had lost its ability to put politicians on the spot.

During an interview with BBC’s Andrew Marr regarding his public image, the interviewer handed the Labour leader caricatures of him as Wallace from Wallace And Gromit.

The pictures included one of Miliband/Wallace on fire as he tried to convince the leader of the Opposition: ‘It is not enough to say ‘it [your image] doesn’t matter.’

This discussion topic followed Mr Miliband recent speech where he declared: ‘There’s more to politics than the photo op.’

Marr turned up the heat on the under-fire politician, stating: ‘It is the job, it is the duty of a political leader to be better at it than you have been… It does matter, it’s the way things are done.’

Miliband replied quietly through gritted teeth: ‘I will keep trying.’

I agree with Miliband that a politician's career shouldn't rest upon being photographed well, instead their policies should be scrutinised. However, to be granted the chance to be scrutinised you must be deemed PR passable, and Ed just isn't.

It's the modern side of politics. Churchill, with his drinking and cigar smoking, would possibly not have been a success as a politician in today's world due to PR and image being the first hurdles that a politician encounters. It's the Obama effect, or perhaps just the Americanisation of British politics.

Unfortunately, the wrong brother was elected leader of the Labour party.... David had by the better image, however, the unions backed Ed. Not that I mind anyway but just saying...

Milibland made me laugh with that speech though.

Made his main point that image should be ignored and that policies should be what we talk about. Then spoke about his image for ages and presented no policies of any substance.

Well done David's brother =D>

Find it pathetic that the media make an issiue over such things and even more pathetic that the BBC stooped so low - leave that **** to The Sun and other **** rags.

When politicians do talk politics it's usually about what everyone else is doing wrong and barely anything on what they would do themselves.

I'm pretty sure David's brother brought it on himself by making his "politics should be about content and not image" speech void of content and all about image.

Did any one here Ed Balls on radio 4 after the gdp figures came out?, it was bloody embarrassing he had no answers and all he could say was that if they had been in power they would have grown the economy and increased standards of living. Sounded like a right ****.

If they get in again the country will go to the dogs again, the coalition has basically got us back to where we were pre-recession

That's just not the world we live in. Image matters in every walk of life and every profession. Good looking, confident, charming people are more successful, period.

The problem with Ed Miliand is that the medias portrayal of Ed Miliband is quite actually a fair reflection of his image. If Obama was caught in a photo eating a bacon sandwich like that it wouldn't be news, because Obama doesn't have that awkward, geeky image.

This isn't new. The 1960 debates were a turning point in the JFK vs Nixon race, in no small part because JFK was the younger, better looking man and Nixon refused to wear makeup, making him look pale and tired.

There's a very good Freakonomics podcast on that.

Sometimes makes me doubt my ability and wonder if my success is all down to being really, really, ridiculously good looking.

He is seriously embarassing. I can't believe that he is understudy to one of the most important political positions in the country. All I ever see him do at PMQ's is sit there and grin like a simpering chimp whilst nodding or shaking his head like the dog off of Churchills Insurance.

They all do it but Ed Balls can never just accept that in the end, the course of action taken has actually had some positive effects with regards the economy. Good figures come out and all he says is that its all well and good but complacency being shown will set us back again. What Complacency?

I saw a good quote from him early last year that said the financial plan was obviously wrong, we were going to flounder and the Chancellor should have changed course 18 months ago, which would have made it mid way through 2011 for his idea of when George Osbourne should have changed course.

I just cannot comprehend this man being in any position of authority or power. He is rivalled only by Harriet Harman in levels of serious irritation.

What I liked was the fact that Ed flew to the States for a 25 minute chat and photo op with Obama just a couple of days before his chat with Marr.

I'm starting to think the Conservatives need to ease up on the ****-taking a little.

If Labour sack David's brother and replace him with literally anyone else they will instantly improve their chances of winning the next election.

Miliband is getting it both barrells every which way. Still can't believe they voted him in over his brother, the Blair wannab. You have to admire the amount of effort and time it must have taken for him to mimick his every mannerism.

There's something beautifully Faustian about Milibland's situation.

He sells his soul to the union devils in order to get power. Now he has it, he can't move to the right and make himself electable. In fact, they want him to keep moving dangerously to the left, which makes him not only unelectable but also a hate figure in his own power-hungry party.

I think Miliband is doing a fabulous job. The more unelectable he makes his party the better!
