I’m with you all the way - and have been arguing the same in the thread over in General - but I do think there is one interesting caveat. If they pitch the role to him as ‘we are changing our model, we want you to build something, it’s all about our youth and we will get you a superstar or two to compliment them’, then does it tempt him?
I still think it would be the wrong move, because I don’t think you can change the innate DNA of a club, or where they sit in the hierarchy. Chelsea have been trying to move this way since they signed AVB, and it’s taken them almost 7 years to fully extract themselves from their previous way of thinking, to move out the existing power players in the dressing room, to get the fans onside with a longer term strategy and more prudence etc, and almost finally they appear ready. There’s a good chance it’s a painful couple of years for them as they try and truly get on to the new model, and I don’t think Madrid are in any way minded to go through similar pain.
Nor do they need to. 4 CLs in the last 5 years. Yes they have some ageing stars. Yes they have some youth that can have more game time. But this is still Real Madrid, with its circus, with its media, with its expectations of the fans, with its need to be a brand rather than a football team. I can see then making the pitch to Poch and him turning it down, quite easily, because he’s always thought more about the long term than the short term. I think he would fancy a crack at taking on Barcelona with their most well equipped rival one day, but I think he would want to build his legacy first. He’ll want to take us as far as he can. Madrid aren’t going to change to suit Poch, and Poch isn’t at the right time in his career to really suit them.
Wenger or Guti for me.
