Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

I'd be surprised if Poch is truly Real Madrid's number 1 target. Don't get me wrong he's done a great job for us on the whole but he must be at least one of the reasons why we always seem to fall short in crunch games. Not saying he's the only or main reason as it's a collective effort but I'm not sure how his lack of trophies really fits in with Madrid's dominance in Europe over the past 5 years and their incredible history of winning trophies in general.

Would have thought they would go for some one with a pedigree and proven track record when it comes to silverware.

Completely agree.

I don’t for a second think he’d turn it down, but I can’t see him being offered it this time around.

You couldn't blame him for taking it if he was offered the job but I think it's too soon for him. Maybe in 2-3 years if we continue to improve and win at least one trophy.

Had Zidane won a trophy as a manager when appointed to manage Madrid?

Well no but he had an illustrious history with them as a player which clearly helped him get his foot in the door. Also helps that he's one of the most famous names in world football from the last 30 years.

He doesn’t, but does anyone before the offer is on the table, if I get a call tomorrow saying “come and work for us, we’ll triple the salary and after 6 months if you are not up to it we’ll let you leave with 5 years cash in your back pocket” then I won’t even bother hanging up the phone, I’ll have already run out of the old place.

He jumped at the better offer we made him and before that the better offer Southampton made, which is possibly more relevant as he joined Southampton from a club where he was emotionally attached. Not only was each move for more money, but a step up too. As Madrid would clearly be.

It’s Madrid, along with coaching the Dallas Cowboys or driving for Ferrari F1 it’s the biggest job in sport, nobody turns it down.

He left Southampton because Cortese left and they were about to sell a bunch of their players that summer. He makes a big deal about loyalty. He's just got new contracts agreed for players like Eriksen and Sanchez.

If it's the right time, I'm sure he does go. But I'm saying he is probably going to be someone that judges whether now is the right time or not, for it to be the best long term move. I don't think he would go right now just because there's a load of money on offer which he blindly accepts.

Poch is one of a select few managers who have beaten Madrid ok Europe under Zidane

They have lost 4 games under his tenure in Europe...

People also forget that if Poch is really on £8.5M a year for 5 years Madrid have to buy that out... £42.5m just for him and probably another £16m for his back room team

Let’s call it £60m for round numbers

They haven’t spent money like they have in the past and do have financial issues... would they really want to spend £60m on a management team when people are available who would cost nothing

Madrid would need to pay £60m ish it buy him and his team out of their contracts.

They can get Wenger, conte or the ex Napoli manager for free...

Madrid need to spend big on players now and have had financial “challenges”

I don’t see Poch going there now

I don’t see him going there ever as by the time the next vacancy is there another manager will be flavour of the month

Among other factors hopefully having to deal with Levy again will put them off .Too early for poch to go there anyway. They will either appoint some Madrid guy or wenger.

Mate this trophy thing is ridiculous, if he wins the League cup or FA cup will he magically be ready for Real? Will they appoint Ranieri because he won the League with Leicester? Had Pellegrini won any Major European trophies before we they appointed him? His stock is high with what he has achieved already. It may not be enough for some Spurs fans but I think it would be enough for Madrid.

Why?
People need to start thinking about it from Pochettino’s perspective and career. It makes literally no sense to go there now. None.

I’m with you all the way - and have been arguing the same in the thread over in General - but I do think there is one interesting caveat. If they pitch the role to him as ‘we are changing our model, we want you to build something, it’s all about our youth and we will get you a superstar or two to compliment them’, then does it tempt him?

I still think it would be the wrong move, because I don’t think you can change the innate DNA of a club, or where they sit in the hierarchy. Chelsea have been trying to move this way since they signed AVB, and it’s taken them almost 7 years to fully extract themselves from their previous way of thinking, to move out the existing power players in the dressing room, to get the fans onside with a longer term strategy and more prudence etc, and almost finally they appear ready. There’s a good chance it’s a painful couple of years for them as they try and truly get on to the new model, and I don’t think Madrid are in any way minded to go through similar pain.

Nor do they need to. 4 CLs in the last 5 years. Yes they have some ageing stars. Yes they have some youth that can have more game time. But this is still Real Madrid, with its circus, with its media, with its expectations of the fans, with its need to be a brand rather than a football team. I can see then making the pitch to Poch and him turning it down, quite easily, because he’s always thought more about the long term than the short term. I think he would fancy a crack at taking on Barcelona with their most well equipped rival one day, but I think he would want to build his legacy first. He’ll want to take us as far as he can. Madrid aren’t going to change to suit Poch, and Poch isn’t at the right time in his career to really suit them.

Wenger or Guti for me.

That conversation won’t happen mate. Put simply, Poch will never, ever have the opportunity to build like he has with us again. Real Madrid? If he doesn’t win/sign galacticos in his first season, then he would be pilloried.

I think if Conte gets the boot he would be a great fit.
If I were Chelski I’d deal him to Madrid on the understanding they don’t go for Hazard...

Yeah I’m with you. And hopefully this ends up being a good thing for us. For Poch to be able to say (not literally, but in the players’ minds) that he could have gone to Madrid but he wants to build something great at Spurs, that should go some way to inspiring loyalty in our players. Maybe it gives them that 1% extra to push on this coming year.

I think from a level perspective, Conte is almost perfect. Only problem for me would be his style of football. He’s not quite Mourinho but he isn’t exactly Ardiles either. Maybe he shifts to get the best out of what he would have at Real.
