Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

I actually believe it myself, if only because if he isn't given the time then DL may as well quit because his judgement will have again been poor. The thing in pochs favour is that people still have in mind the kind of football his soton side played. And that is starting to be translated on to the pitch at times but no where near consistently enough.

I think he'll have at least a couple of transfer windows to sort the squad balance out and bring in players that can play his way. So still a bit of a cull in cm ( if i was demeble or pauli id be worried) lennon and townsend are also on borrowed time. Its clear we are not going to be playing with width anytime soon and the biggest issue with europa league is not having players who can plat the same system each game.

I think that the Champions League is a target this year, but not a requirement. Next season it will be a minimum I'd expect.

Why?

Despite Levy's reputation for sacking managers, I genuinely don't think that he has sacked any of them for specifically failing to get Spurs into the Champions League. He's not stupid. He knows perfectly well that Spurs will always face an uphill struggle to qualify ahead of any of the five teams that have vastly greater resources. What Levy demands, I suspect, is that his manager shares the same philosophy as to how the club should be run and how it should grow; that the manager maximises the potential of the players at his disposal; that the manager is a team player and doesn't follow his own agenda in the media; that the manager doesn't lose the dressing room.

With that in mind, what about the managers that Levy has sacked since we even got close to becoming a team near the top of the table?

Jol - Levy had kept faith with Jol while other board members wanted to get rid but, eventually, he was persuaded that Ramos would do a better job of maximising the players' potential.

Ramos - lost the dressing room.

Redknapp - didn't share Levy's vision for how the club should progress; followed his own agenda in the media.

AVB - despite expectations to the contrary, didn't share Levy's philosophy; lost sections of the dressing room.

Sherwood - lost the dressing room; followed his own agenda in the media; probably only ever a temporary measure anyway.

So I don't think that Poch needs to finish in the top four within the next few years. If he continues to bring young players through; if he has a reasonable understanding of (and agreement with) the kind of players that Spurs can afford to sign; if he can develop an attractive playing philosophy at the club that maximises the players' potential; if the players are happy; and if he represents the club well in the media then, so long as we remain a top five / six club, I'm confident that Levy will give him time to return us to the Champions League.

There was a clear shift upon Pochettino's appointment from Levy from what i remember - he didn't really talk up the importance of CL qualification the way he has done before, there was more focus on developing a style of play and entertaining attacking football - which is telling imv as is the 5 (?) year contract MP was given.

Proof will be in the pudding i guess but those early signs are promising

Poch obviously not happy with the way we were undone again and again tonight by the ball over the top. Dier for me was not on the same wavelength when Fazio and Verts stepped up and it wasn't just for the build up to Hugo's red card. We have had this problem with the high line for some time and it seems that both AVB and Poch are having their team eploited in the same way. There were also times today where Capoue and Dembele both left the deep sitting positions completely exposing the back two, which shouldn't ever happen.

Should we drop the high line?

Or try a settled back four with a specialist right back?

Indeed, there were some very worrying moments. It wasn't the high line, just generally trying to play offside rather than sticking with the runner.

Everything we touched turned to gold, everything they tried went wrong, hence the scoreline, but it was a tight game for a while.

The block from Ben Davies at 1-0 was super important

I agree that the defence is worrying; I also still worry that Capoue is not offering enough protection and working well enough in tandem with his midfield partner.

We got away with it today, but tbf we've been unlucky at other times so maybe we were due this luck (in that we only conceded)

But we aren't playing with a specialist RB as mentioned and once one of them comes back perhaps we will improve drastically

If Stambouli is fully fit I think we'll see him against Saudi Sportswashing Machine. We've got a run of home games against modest opposition, then Asteras and Villa away IIRC, so it's as good a time as any to make some changes/try out different combos.

How does everyone else find his interview? I'm not a fan of his so it hasn't endeared him to me any further. I'm glad he wants perfection though.

Hmmm, do you think he will be played alongside or in place of Capoue?
Doesn't seem likely that Capoue will play 3 straight games in 8 days..

What is it that has turned you off him?

Nothing in particular. Maybe unfairly so but I was underwhelmed by his appointment in the first place which wasn't a great start! I just want the excitement factor back and I didn't see it with this appointment. Tonight we saw it and I hope to be proved wrong this season.

Fair enough. Out of interest, who was the last manager appointed that got you excited (or at least not underwhelmed)?

Glenn Hoddle. Oh how we all wanted him to succeed.

You've got me thinking now. I was underwhelmed by AVB the most but also by Redknapp but was delighted to be proved wrong. Also underwhelmed by Jol, Santini, Graham, Gross and Francis too! Wasn't impressed by Ramos but thought he'd succeed. Not doing too well am I??

Haha; It's the hope that kills isn't it. Out of all of those I wanted Hoddle - a true Spurs man through and through - to succeed. Then probably Jol. You felt like these two were part of the fam-lee!!

Perhaps it's good to be underwhelmed at first, so that you can appreciate the good things more wholesomely (though that didn't help me with Sherwood but let's not go there lol!)
