Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

Fair enough, I don't want to come fourth either. :p Let's compromise - get three points at home to United and *then* go on holiday? Job done, 80 points, 2nd in the bag, and we can be generous to Hull.

You're compromising because you want a perfect end to the season and this wouldn't be it. I'm compromising because I would admittedly like us to utterly ravage Leicester in revenge for all their odious rubbish over the last two seasons. But we both get a *bit* of what we want. ;)

I think your posts on GG after last nights defeat have been far off mate. You sound like you suggesting we can go into the last three games not giving a toss because of our improved points position to last year.

Let me tell you points on the board mean nothing compared to where your position is on the table and furthermore these last three games I think will go long away in determining our season next year.

We talk about winning trophies well let me say that to win trophies you need to have the mentality to go to Leceister and win you need to have the mentality to beat Man U at home

Yes we can blame the European championship for our slow start to this season but do you not think it is also realistic to put some blame on the way we started this season on the way we finished last season. I think so.

For me to finish the season on high is a must and will bode well for the start of next season which we will need being at Wembly

I love this club more than ever. Poch will go down as our best manage ever. He will stay u til we win lots and lots of trophies.

We are playing such great football and the squad spirit is high. Results like tonight are gutting, but this (and most of last) season have been bloody buggery brilliant. And it's down to Poch. And Levy for hiring him. Long may it last.

Did I mention how much I love this club?
What irritates me mate is that it seems to always be one of the unholy trinity of WHAM, Chelsea and Arsenal that stand between us and our dreams. Not sure which one to dislike the most; ah probably Chelsea as they are our most realistic challengers.

Indeed, it never ceases to amaze me how Wet Spam fans see us as their most hated rivals (after Milwall) so their players will put in a once a season performance against us but they will happily bend over and spread their cheeks for ARSEnal and Chavski

Since their most recent return to the top flight... o_O

I've disagreed with this position for ages, so I'm not about to start agreeing with it now. Where you finish in the table is at least partly out of your hands - it is dependent on all sorts of other factors, including the relative strength of the league, the over/under-performance of other teams and so on.

All we can control is how many points we accumulate. Thus, getting more points than we previously ended up getting should be the aim every season - and, equally, if we reach that goal, the actual *position* we finish in becomes somewhat ephemeral. The more points we get, the likelier we are to finish top/near the top. That's just an unarguable truth. All else is dependent on factors out of our control.

We talk about winning trophies well let me say that to win trophies you need to have the mentality to go to Leceister and win you need to have the mentality to beat Man U at home

Or beat Arsenal at home. Or beat Chelsea at home. Or go to Palace and win. Or go to City and come back from two goals down to draw. Or go to Swansea and come back from a one-goal deficit in the final ten minutes to win 3-1. You get my point. If there's one thing we've displayed throughout this season, it's a winning mentality. I fail to see how dead rubbers against Leicester or United would in any way prove more than what our exploits so far have. They're important to win - but we can afford not to win them, if it comes down to that.

Too few data points to categorically state that one season's finish bleeds over into the next. Let's see what happens this summer before proclaiming a judgement on that - if we end up struggling to begin with despite winning against (say) Leicester, then there is no correlation. Likewise, if we struggle now but come out of the gate swinging in August, then, again, there's no real relationship.

I agree points are important but a difference of one or 2 points between seasons is not evidence of progress or regress. That's why I never held much stock in AVB's 72 compared to Harry's 71 etc. To me a point or two difference across a whole 38 game season is not a statistically significant measure of progress.

However, getting into the 80s is unchartered territory, psychologically it breaks through a barrier we have never come through before. It is also the point range where genuine title contenders end their season. In fact I think Leicester won the title with 81 points last season. That's why I believe we need to be somewhere in the 80 points this season to harbour a realistic hope of winning the title in the near future.

Of course we also have the "monkey on our back" of folding in the last 3 games last season. So it is important to maintain our momentum this year which means these final games are far from"dead rubber."

We've talked about this before. ;) Depends on how you take it - if we are accustomed to finishing on 70 points, get 72 and then herald that as just an unusually good season in an otherwise consistent 70-point run, then sure. If you take it as the new bar- i.e, get 72, then *demand* at least 72 and very preferably more than that, then that becomes a stepping stone to progress. A continual climb upward, however slow.

I don't think we can feasibly expect jumping from 70 points to 80 and then to 85 or 90 - those are gigantic leaps, in footballing terms, and we haven't had anywhere near the amount of investment or development necessary to justify such expectations. As it is, with a small net spend, we've managed to go from 72 to 77 - an extra win and two extra draws, more or less, with three games still to play. That is definite progress, whether or not we hit the 80 point mark.

Well, even breaking the 72-point mark was a barrier we hadn't surmounted, prior to last month. To finish with 80+ would be great, but given that we've already made tangible progress towards a new standard in the high-70's (in itself unthinkable prior to the events of the last few seasons), it would be a bit too demanding to delineate an 80+ point finish as the new standard to follow so soon after vaulting that aforementioned barrier, imo. All about progress, but I'm happy with it being a bit slow as long as it is *assured*.

Of course we also have the "monkey on our back" of folding in the last 3 games last season. So it is important to maintain our momentum this year which means these final games are far from"dead rubber."

We'll see. Suppose we win against United but lose against Hull and Leicester? It would still be folding across the last two games of the season, or of folding in the last four (three losses and just the one win). And yet, we would have met your 80-point target.

It isn't necessarily indicative of folding, is my point.

We must surely consider context. If we were competing around 4th/5th as we were in the days of Harry and AVB and we managed get to 77 points on the last game then yes it should be regarded as progress because that is where the team are at. But this season we have blitzed our way to 77 points with 4 games left to play (3 points off our target) and having built ourselves up as title contenders. We have made that rod for our backs. We simply must achieve 80 points or it could conceivably be said we were never really genuine title contenders.

I don't think 72 points was a barrier last season (not one which Poch would have taken seriously, anyway). We didn't achieve it because 2/3 matches before the end of the season we lost our best players. That's what I mean by small margins, with points totals that close together there are just too many permutations over a 38 game season for one to read too much into 1 or 2 points difference.

The target of 80 points and giving a good account of ourselves in the final 3 games are 2 separate but important things. The first because it shows what we can achieve as a team and gives us a platform for next season. The second because it keeps the hounds at bay with their "bottlers" tag. I think finishing the season strongly is very important, because stumbling in the final few games two seasons in a row might cast doubt in young minds that we can ever finish strongly.

its been a phenomenal season considering how shattering the end to last season was, plus the poor England performances with our lads involved during the Euros last summer.....To have come back this season and played like they have and gained as many points as they have has been unbelievable.

Key for Poch now is at least remaining unbeaten till the end of this season and then more importantly starting next season much better than we have the previous two seasons. If we can be amongst the top 3 and close to 1st from the start until around christmas then we really will have an excellent chance of actually winning the league. Chasing and clawing back huge points gaps is hard as we have seen.

IMO the number of points are immaterial, all that counts is what position you finish in. I would rather win the league with 78 points than come second with 88 points.

West Ham once got relegated with over 40 points. Do you think they consoled themselves by the fact that getting to that mark would've had them safe in any other season?.... of course they didn't.

Our target at the moment is to win the league. When that becomes mathematically impossible, our target then changes to finishing second, when that becomes mathematically certain then I expect the manager to wind things down and play some fringe players. The players have had a long, hard season with many also being involved in International competitions last summer. If we can win at the weekend and guarantee second place then the team can go into holiday mode.

Poch just wants to WIN ALL the remaining games. I know I do. Then it's all done and dusted, onto next season.

I wonder how quick Levy is on the blower to get signings in - but also sew up those who's contracts we need to improve and tie up.

Ignore the points, we are in a one off where hopefully after we get a point against Utd we have absolutely zero to play for.

Really Really want to see for last 2 games Edwards, KWP and possibly even Omonah in CM tested out, its perfect opportunity to see if they are ready or not, and that can then inform our transfer policy.

If KWP comes in looks stable, then no need to replace walker if he goes. If not then he goes out on loan and we get in a replacement for 2yrs
If Edwards looks very bright then equally we need a backup to erikksen/alli but we can consider a older experienced player
if Omonah looks better in CM then we may be able to get him a loan to brighton or somebody in that position

Poch would be mad to get caught up in the, we must run through a brick wall, if we get to the last week and are guaranteed 2nd thats proof enough.

bit unfair to judge them on two games, and especially two games where if the team has zero to play for there is every chance the other players will be in holiday mode and not perform as they normally would.

Let them play and simply get PL minutes under their belt. Thats all.

Disagree really with KWP and Edwards we would be looking at physical strength, Positioning and if they can beat a man/attack at this level. All of which we should be able to judge. Not saying we then get rid, but it should tell us, they are ready now or they need another year and then re-assess and maybe send them on loan.

Kane is desperate to chase down Lukaku, and Son is desperate to get to 20. so play

Lloris
KWP Dier Toby Jan Rose
Wanyama Omonah
Edwards Son
Kane

Or

KWP Toby Jan Rose
Dier Omonah Nkoudou
Edwards Kane Son

They are now on international duty so aren't going to be playing for us this season.

Onomah and KWP re on England U20s duty in mid-late May so it's unlikely they would be involved.
And whilst seeing young players featuring in the last couple of games might give US the fans an opportunity to see if they are ready or not, I would expect Poch and McDermott and co.. to be able to make that assessment without having to throw the players in. Therefore if Edwards is not picked to play for the senior team, it is because he is not yet ready to do so.

Serie A giants Inter Milan are reportedly ready to offer Mauricio Pochettino double his current Tottenham wages to try and lure him to Italy.

The Nerazzurri sacked their head coach Stefano Pioli on Tuesday evening and have placed Stefano Vecchi in charge for the final three games of the season.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has been strongly linked with the job but seems likely to stay at Champions-elect Chelsea, so Inter have now turned their attentions to Pochettino and outgoing Barcelona chief Luis Enrique, reports Football Italia.

According to Sky Sport Italia pundit Gianluca Di Marzio, Inter are ready to offer the Spurs chief 10m euros a year but if he turns the job down then Enrique, along with Diego Simeone of Atletico Madrid and Roma’s Luciano Spalletti, will be targeted.

Enrique has previous experience working in Italy after his one-year spell in charge at Roma and is still friends with Inter director Walter Sabatini, who used to be the director of sport at the Giallorossi during Enrique’s time there.
