Matt Doherty

Story seems to be, there was interest in him last summer from other clubs and he agreed to stay one more season, so perhaps one of those agreements where the club is a little more reasonable as result.

If this happens then I’m very happy with the transfer. I know I was critical elsewhere about Spurs transfer activity. But, to have three squad signings completed in relatively quick turnaround would be good moves, especially with the players all having Premier League experience, all therefore more likely to adapt quickly to playing for us, and with reasonable prices. The price that’s been talked about for Doherty is a complete bargain. And yes, he supports Arsenal but I couldn’t care less about that as long as he puts in his maximum efforts when playing for us. This is a job for them, and there are plenty of examples of footballers who went on to have very successful careers for the clubs that were the rivals of those that they had supported. Gerrard and Carragher, for example, did ok at Liverpool, and they were Everton supporters.

You had me until the carragher bit.

Wolves fans think he's a bit of a steal.

Nice to see!

I have no idea, I was hoping an article about a defender would have informed me of that, rather than how many touches he has in the opposition box.
No chance
People seem
To rate full backs in their attacking alone now. Odd I know but no one seems to care if they can defend at all

This is my biggest worry with the guy - Wolves fans are pretty miserable that he's leaving, but seem to think he was an excellent wing-back and a sub-par defender (actually, many of them are saying he was atrocious in a back-four or when asked to defend).

I don't want a souped-up Aurier, tbh - rather we get a decently capable full-back adept at both ends. Still would be a great signing, but I'm worried that his defensive capabilities come up so little in discussion of him.

Clearly we don’t think or want a “traditional” full back. Just want one who isn’t a fudgetard like Aurier
I’m far form convinced about his defensive side but he doesn’t suffer form the brain farts whenever I’ve seen them play. He also has that knack of coming inside which gives us an overload in a key area
We need to see but he has passed his medical today so it’s happening

He seems to like getting forward and cutting inside, So doesn't seem to cross much. I wonder how that would work in our system? We like to spread the play wide to Aurier to try and get crosses in but if that is not Doherty's game then will whoever is playing in front of him need to stay wider like a traditional winger no? His stats seem to look like a prefect fit to pay behind an Aaron Lennon etc.

Either way he is obviously highly rated so will look forward to seeing him.

I like it - would give more variation going forward. We also lack bodies in the box sometimes so having him bursting a gut to get on the end of a cross would be helpful too

I believe the way we will play with him is just that
We will have the left side owners by son and the right owned by Moura or another player who stays wide and takes the FB out
We can then overload the inside areas

How old was Walker when we sold him? Maybe there are some parallels. Walker wasn't the best player for us in his early 20s. Many fans were critical. But he came good, matured, and by the time he left he was a rounded player. We weren't that sorry to see him go as he was never perfect. But in hindsight, we never replaced him fully.

Doherty is possibly similar in that he's developed into a good player, Wolves fans didn't really expect him to be transferred as he's not one of their stand out performers. But he's a solid mature fullback who gets goals and would be an upgrade for us.

I believe that he's got the most assists of any fullback after TAA over the last couple of seasons. I'll be happy to see an end to all of our attacking play going through Aurier, his delivery is not that good and it is easy to defend against.
