Mathys Tel

Not trying to make excuses for Tel but I do wonder if Charlton were doubling up more on our left hand side last night, seeing Tel / Udogie as more of a threat than Moore / Gray, who seemed to have more space.

Anyway, I think Tel is really quite good, and unfortunately a lot of the opinions on him are coloured by the fact that for most of his time at the club, the club has been an absolute basket case.

You're right in that he didn't have a good performance Tuesday night (he was better against a good PL RB on Saturday weirdly) but at the same time outside of the goal I don't think Moore was particularly impressive either. Neither were Bergvall, Gray, Udogie, JPVH, Davies or Solanke if we're being fair. The only real bright sparks for me were Bentancur and Fernandes.

Both Tel and Gray are being judged on two games though, and in a team which is not playing cohesively as we bring back starters and integrate the new players into RDZ's system. I'd be ok with both as backups or sending Moore out on loan if we bring in another winger to start on the left, but my concern is highlighting individual players in a system which is not yet performing at anywhere near its' optimal level. It's a slippery slope.

I agree. If we had brought him in this summer many on here would be praising his attitude in trying to always be positive.

He didn't have a good game but he wasn't the only one. I thought he was our best player Saturday though.

But we're a new team playing a new system. Give it time.
 
I know people get defensive when he's criticised, but he's no where near good enough. Doesn't have a trick to beat a player and doesn't have pace to beat a player. Must be so easy to defend against for a Premier league quality full back.

Lots of little touches, lots of little touches, cut back get blocked off or pass backwards.

The decision to make his loan permanent was really poor.
 
I still think the lad is worth persevering with. Maybe not as a starter but I’d still have him around the first eleven.

He had a poor game today no doubt. Unfortunately, the free kick is gif-worthy but it isn’t fair IMO.

His first two touches today were poison. Lost it twice. But he kept showing for the ball, he kept trying things rather than just playing it safe. That takes character and this lad, every time he’s pulled on our shirt, has shown character. His play needs to be better but he’s still young.
 
@Bishop indeed, he has not had great decision-making skills, and I was hooing with confidence and the backing of a manager who wants him to take his man on more, we might see an improvement. Alas, I am wondering...I think there's a really good player in there, however at a certain point I might have to accept that player will unveil themselves at another club.
@DeanoAustin in the ideal world we'd loan him however I don't think he would take that. I feel he wants a full-time role.
 
I defended him as a player because he’s younger than I think many appreciate. He’s younger than Lankshear. However, he’s not ready to be starting matches for us with the pressure that there inevitably will be on him and the team to perform. He needs to take a backseat on the bench, train hard and earn starting chances that he has to take. For now he needs to withdrawn from the team for his sake and ours.
 
Thought that was his worst game for us in a while unfortunately. Way worse than Brentford. Didn’t seem like the speed of thought was on Markoush’s level. And his head seemed to drop as the game wore on.

I really like him and have defended him a lot, but unfortunately thought he was a weak link today. Porro out of position looked like more of a threat on the right.
 
Love his mentality but hope that our injured senior attackers are able to retake their places in starting team soon, as Tel clearly is far from the finished article and we need to get some PL goals on the board stat!

Oh and I sincerely hope that he lets Porro take the next FK!

And it seems to be forgotten he did some good things still, even though overall was poor.

The mentality he has, not hiding when things aren't going your way is a big thing to have when young. Certainly not writing him off yet, will be better for everyone when he is being rotated rather than automatic first choice as he's not there yet....

Agree 100% with this. He shouldn’t start but if you’re a 21 year old kid who can keep trying to do your thing when you’ve had a bit of a nightmare and 60,000 are groaning whenever you get the ball, you’re the sort of character I want in the squad.
