Laptop Slowness

Does anyone know some good free tools to run on a laptop to speed it up?

I've got a 2 year old Sony Vaio that has suddenly started to take ages to start up? Can I download something easy to use that could improve things? I've done the only things I know of, defrag, disk clean up and ran an AVG scan.

Also, The fan seems to also be going crazy now, like it's working really hard, even though the only thing I have open (that I know of) is Chrome.

Any suggestions?

Could it be a problem with the cooling? I had a problem with a Compaq where the heat sink came unglued and it slowed (with the fan going like crazy) and eventually failed. I had to refix the heat sink to fix it.

You could check that the air vents haven't become clogged with dust.

Lots of processors step down when their temperature increases. If your calling isn't working then that could explain it.

Run a utility to check the CPU temp. Laptop cooling is often the issue as jts said. Often the fan vents get blocked and because of their size it affects airflow and therefore cooling. Google that. They are relatively easy to clean and there will no doubt be a how-to online. When checking for nasties, always do so in Safe Mode just to be sure.

CCleaner will also show you what services are starting up when the laptop boots - turn off those you don't need (but be careful - laptops have a lot of what looks unnecessary but are anything but), allow you to easily get rid of temp files and the like. Could be worth a go...

Ok, So I have found a YouTube clip on how to open up my model laptop and clean out the fan. I've never done it before but doesn't look too tricky so will probably need to give it a try at the weekend.

Temperatures look fine.

Try running Spybot S&D and MBAM

I often use iobit advanced system care free, it cleans up the registry, checks for disc errors and a whole bunch of other stuff that might cause the PC to be slow. Malware bytes is another good option if you think it could be a virus.

If not, open performance monitor when it's running slowly and see if the CPU, RAM or disk usage is up close to 100%
