Does anyone else ever wonder why full backs are seemingly never encouraged to try and take on a man when they get forward? It's weird how a right back like Trippier is always looking for the ball, bombing forward into the space in the opposition half but when he receives it and doesnt have a chance to whip in a cross he stops, looks up and simply goes back again just to keep possession, losing the momentum of the attack. On other occasions Trippier would do the obvious right thing and try to lay it into Son (Who then quite often has 1 or 2 defenders on him and has to lay it straight back). I understand the overall benefit of keeping possession and wearing down the opposition or probing for better opportunities but how scary would it be if every time the full backs received the ball early and were 1 on 1 if they just tried to go directly past their man once in a while.
I would never complain if possession ends with Rose trying to get past his man but ends up over dribbling it, or losing possession etc. It's actually refreshing to see sometimes and it gives the opposition defender a tough time and makes them less likely to get forward.

I think the biggest problem with Trippier is that he hasn't got the pace that full backs in Poch's preferred system require to be able to provide all the width while still getting back to cover the opponent's wide forward.

Trippier is still going to play a part this season, but I really can't see him here beyond that. Overall, he's been a very good signing for us but I think his time here is up now.

That for me is his biggest problem he has never been that good as a defender but for whatever reason he has got worse this season, he seems to be unaware who is running in behind him and when he does see them he is slow to react.

This is what I see too. He's often oblivious to the danger behind him. I would also add that he is very easily beaten with any sort of a trick when he is facing someone up. It happens way too often.

Yes, kind of goes to one of my main complaints with him - he doesnt have the pace to stretch the opposition, which means we play in front of them on the right hand side

Rose isn't quite back to his back from 2-3 years ago, but Trippier is a massive downgrade on Walker

I think the point is from reading all the posts is that he can perform well but rarely reaches that ceiling which means long term he isn't good enough to be first choice for a team that want to be challenging for trophies. People said he needs 3 CB's to play well but I don't think his performances vary that much whether we play with 2 or 3 at the back. He gets beaten quite easily and doesn't have the recovery pace, his positioning isn't too sharp either.

It's definitely a weak position for us and will have to be addressed in the summer, too many crosses come from that side and it seems that it's often targeted by the opposition.

Well he has turned into a important player for us so maybe that is a good shout. Trippier is becoming a liability.

In terms of Trippier, I remember in the first half vs the Goons they showed a stat where 60% of our attacks were coming down the right and about 15% were coming down the left.
Yet people moaned because Trippier was not doing enough.

He has his flaws, but when the Goons put 10 men behind the ball on their own 18 yard line, it was hard for ANY of our attackers to do anything - they all looked terrible.

How many times does 'The Bury Beckham' try and take on a player to get a cross in? I think perhaps as much as 'The Leytonstone Trippier' did (that's Beckham, btw).

Amazing how the same player can be viewed so differently.

Agree Trippier has been making too many costly errors in recent games but he's also been doing some good stuff in between. His calamitous OG against Chelsea came towards the end of what was otherwise a very decent performance and for the first 45 minutes against Arsenal I made him one of our best players along with Sissoko.

Successful tackles, excellent first-time passes down the flank into wide open spaces for attackers to run onto, mostly decent crosses and corners that on another day were good enough to find a Tottenham head and, to cap it all, that superb fk that led to Kane's offside goal.

Unfortunately he had a somewhat indifferent second half in Saturday's game which I suspect is what is sticking in your mind, that plus his brain farts in previous games.

So yes he's been making too many costly errors in recent games but to say he's "nothing short of shocking" after otherwise decent performances in two tough games against the Arse on Saturday and Chelsea on Wednesday seems overly harsh imo.

Yep. It was easy for them to defend as we never switched flanks and wasn’t quick enough

Both our fullbacks were ineffective; it was striking that Rose barely had the ability to get in behind as well..

I hope he turns it around. He’s a good lad, just had a rough year. It would be nice to not need to replace him.
