Kieran Trippier

Can only assume that Pochettino is expecting the Bury Becks to create hatfuls of chances for Llorente with his prodigious crossing ability... and, as you say, I’d trust Sissoko in a footrace with any decent wide forward more than Trippier anyway...

It’s so obvious recently I’m actually wondering if it’s by tactical design.

Either as it’s seen as a way to push trips up for an attacking benefit, or just because he’s so brick at defending!

Exactly what I was going to say.

I wont go so far as to say Trippier is playing well, but I think him being up field is certainly by design. In a lot of ways it compensates for both of their deficiences.

Good management by Poch IMO.

I dont understand how he keeps getting picked, are the other two that bad?

He was a disaster again yesterday and was sheer luck/poor finishing that meant we did not get punished.

Look at his positioning from the screen grab yesterday....
Maybe because we've won 74% of games he's played this season against 67% when he hasn't?

I think that two headed arrow is Sissoko's shot into the next timezone. Thankfully he's improved at everything else.

The theory may be sound but in practice we are giving up loads of chances down that side. I'm not sure it is working that well as a tactic.

I never said it was!

Much like most of our season, I think its a case of needs must/making do/getting the best of a bad situation.

We know the sort of set up Poch would certainly prefer and have been unable to play that way literally all season.

If we didnt have it the way it is, what is the alternative? Trippier failing as a conventional RB and Sissoko failing to produce as much in attack?

I think this plays to their respective strengths more, but of course think we can also so MUCH better.

This is the key for me. Walker and Rose got and get caught out up the pitch from time to time but their recoveries were better.

Good point, you can say SC was another one who used his pace when he got out of position. The problem with Trippier though is he does not seem to see who/what is happening behind him nad then does not have the pace to get back.

Now you would think that most players would make allowances for their lack of pace but for whatever reason he seems unable to do that. Most of Leicester"s danger came down his side and Gray had him on toast.

Why I prefer Aurier, Im not saying he's as pacy as Walker but he certainly looks better in recovery situations etc Also think Aurier does put in a fair share of good crosses, certainly dont think Trippier for all his apparent delivery quality creates enough opportunities for him to warrant being first choice.....

You have a point. I was a big Trippier fan but his defensive lapses have become one too many for my liking.

Trips is playing winger, with Sissoko sitting in. Clearly Trips is not expected to be both furthest forward AND full back.

Just because Walker and Rose tried to do this, does not mean mere mortals can do it

That’s the way I see it

If Poch thought trippier playing furthest forward is an option then I’m fine with it. It’s onky us fans who seem to have an issue with it, yet Poch keeps on playing him

It’s a team game now more than ever and one player may balance another

My main concern with Trippier is that he consistently struggles against wingers with pace, and Dortmund have a lot of pace

He struggles defensively in general, and his attacking output has been poor for quite some time.

I have no problem with him being up field, but if he is, he needs to cross early and often (especially with Llorente in side), and he needs to run back on the line. Instead, he gets the ball high up, stands on it, then passes back or sideways. And when he gets caught out, he will actually follow the ball into the center, which still leaves his side exposed ..

We have to make sure next season he's second choice, he can be decent cover, but first choice in big games he's simply not good enough.

When we had Walker I remember plenty of criticism about his crossing. Better than Trips in defence, I suppose, but I for one am excited when I see Trips about to put a cross in to the box.

OK, he needs cover behind him, that's what Toby, Davinson and Jan are for, not to mention the DM.

I like Trips, and although there's undoubtedly better out there, Trips is who we have. And Poch trusts him.

COYS.

Strange you say he needs to cross the ball early, I'd argue that crossing early is his one big speciality! Personally I love the way he hooks it first time across the face of the goal. I'd argue he has been doing that all along in recent games, not always as accurately as you'd wish but often enough. Part of the problem imo is the failure of our forwards to get on the end of them.

I watch him closely every game because of the incessant criticism he attracts especially from one or two on here and am amazed at how the good work he does game in game out seems to go unnoticed. I can only think that his overall performance is being judged more harshly these days because of his defensive errors.

As others have stated, If he really has been that poor it begs the question why Poch mostly continues to prefer him ahead of Aurier and KWP. For sure he has been poor defensively at times and I'd also agree he's not been at his best going forward this season but that is not to say he doesn't also do a lot of excellent work in between.

As I have pointed out previously, it's interesting that our overall win % when he plays is better than when he doesn't. Explain that one!

Correlation doesn't prove causation as the old adage goes. It may just be a statistical quirk. I genuinely don't think his influence is big enough to cause us to win more games when he plays. It does seem though, that the more tactically astute managers target him. Managers like Espirito de Santo and Puell. I think Rose is far more influential.
