I thought Liverpool were getting a lot of decisions, the one that frustrated me most was towards the end where Saha was taken down and while he's on the floor fatty Adam trips over him and gets a freekick in a pretty dangerous position.

come on... on what evidence can you assume that kick is "clearly intentional." suarez is a clam, but he's also an extremely competitive striker, fired up to score on his return to the side. he nudges parker as parker jumps for the ball and is anticipating that nudge causing parker to miss his header and for the ball to fall to him. its poorly timed, dangerous play, but its not by any means intentional violence. suarez has a history of petulance and cynicism, but not violence. he'd much rather score a goal there than commit a foul//kick parker.

Stuart Attwell demoted

Stuart Attwell has lost his place on the list of Select Group of referees and will return to Football League duty on the National List.

The move, which is said to come by mutual consent, comes after the 29-year-old made a string of high-profile errors after being promoted to the elite group of referees at the start of the 2008-09 season aged just 25.

Only weeks into that season, Attwell attracted heavy criticism for awarding Reading a goal against Watford when John Eustacehad kicked the ball over the byline four yards wide of the goal before it was put back into play by Noel Hunt. Attwell's linesman Nigel Bannister signalled for a goal.

More recently in December, Attwell sent off Gary Cahill, then of Bolton, for fouling Scott Parker only yards over the halfway line, saying he had denied Tottenham a clear goalscoring opportunity. The red card was overturned on appeal.

In a statement on Wednesday, Professional Game Match Officials Limited general manager Mike Riley backed Attwell to improve as a referee and return to the top level.

Dropped

"Throughout his career in the Select Group Stuart has demonstrated great courage and mental strength in responding to the challenges that he has faced," Riley said.

"He has shown many of the attributes of a top flight official but the Premier League is an exacting standard with huge demands. It is imperative that PGMOL deliver the best officiating possible to the English game at all levels.

"This is not the end for Stuart. There are several match officials who have returned to the National List and benefited from it.

"Stuart has a high level of maturity and responsibility and I'm convinced that he has a long-term future as a referee at the very highest level.

"PGMOL sincerely hopes to be welcoming Stuart back to the Select Group in the future."

Attwell said: "I have learned a great deal from my involvement in the Select Group over the last four years and I am now looking forward to building on that valuable experience.

"I strongly believe I have a lot to offer refereeing, and I now look forward with commitment and enthusiasm to the new challenge that I am undertaking.

"This is supported by a determination to continue my career development, and return to the Select Group as soon as possible."

Attwell spent only one year on the national list prior to his promotion to the select group four years ago.

He made his Premier League debut as a referee in the 1-1 draw between Blackburn and Hull in August 2008.

Controversies

Following the Watford-Reading game, further controversies followed when he was accused of "losing control" of a Derby-Nottingham Forest derby, having disallowed two Derby goals in the final stages, booking eight players and sending off Forest's Lewis McGugan.

He has also attracted the ire of Wigan manager Roberto Martinez, who accused the referee of lying about his reasons for sending off Gary Caldwell in April 2010, while Stoke's Danny Higginbotham claimed Attwell could be too easily influenced by players.

Later that year, he awarded Liverpool a highly controversial goal against Sunderland. He had awarded the Black Cats a free-kick inside their own half and Michael Turner touched the ball back to Simon Mignolet, apparently for the goalkeeper to take the set-piece.

But Attwell ruled the ball active, allowing Fernando Torres to steal it and set up Dirk Kuyt to finish into an empty net.

Webb has been much worse than him this season. Attwell has matured well and you will never see him show a bias like referee's such as Clattenburg and Webb show.

Foy should be next. Just out of interest, how exactly are the refs graded? The only reason I ask is because Webb will almost certainly go to the Euros as a representative of England, but on current form he doesn't deserve to go. Is it based on anything other than reputation?

That's the list of controversial decisions they could find for Attwell? You can find double that for Webb's bad decisions against us alone.

That's what I mean about reputations. Webb has made too many **** ups to mention, and yet he's still regarded as our best ref! You'd never see Webb "rested" for a week after a shocking decision.

I never understand demotion.

Are they saying that its ok to cheat teams with tinkle poor decisions because they are in a lower league?

That's all they can find on Attwell? Surely the red card on Cahill - yes it is debatable and probably should've been a yellow - wasn't that controvercial. At least he made a decision and stood by it.

For me it's far worse that stonewall penalties, blatant diving/cheating/shirt pulling, and bone breaking tackles are being overlooked on a regular basis. Foy's performance in the Stoke game alone should be enough to make sure he never gets to referee professional football again. That's pure incompetence.

This, for me, smells of spacegoating. There's been quite a few controversial decisions this season, and debates on the standard of refereeing. By demoting Attwell, the poor sod, "action is taken". I'm sure he'll be back in the PL next season as if nothing ever happened, while the referee association can lean back and say they take the problem of inconsistent and poor refereeing seriously.

Mike Dean conspiracy or fans chatting out of their Arsenal's?

'Watching Match of the Day 2 I noticed referee Mike DeanÔÇÖs odd reaction to Louis SahaÔÇÖs goal. I have to say if I didnÔÇÖt know better it appears as though he wants the ball to go in after it deflects off Vermaelen!

He seems to react much like the Spurs fans did ÔÇö jumping up excitedly as the ball loops off Vermaelen before urging the ball in with his hands as it trickles towards the line. Then he appears to start a little ÔÇÿMr Bean-likeÔÇÖ celebratory jig (watch his right leg) before remembering heÔÇÖs supposed to be impartial and composing himself.

Maybe this explains why he gave Spurs a penalty after that blatant dive by the cheating tosspot Gareth Bale.

Arsenal fans are so annoying it hurts me. ](*,)

i posted the gif's in the OMT - if the ref reacted that way to a goal we conceded against Arsenal (keeping in mind they have not won in their previous 9 games with him in charge) i imagine we'd be making something out of it - imagine if it was Webb against Man Utd for example
