Internet Speed in potential new house

Spursman

Neil Sullivan
I viewed a house a couple of months ago that myself and finance both loved. We put an offer in but someone else offered cash.

The sale fell through and i have an opportunity to buy it. ( i have first refusal) We love the house and its in a lovely road in the area we want.

However.... as an avid gamer there is no fiber broadband! The average speed in the area seems to be 2-5mb which is crap. ( i am on 100mb currently) i understand that download speed isn't everything and that latency and packet loss is also vital. Fibre is available in the surrounding area it just appears that the developers didnt get it installed a year ago. I have contacted Openreach and Virgin and they cant say if they will ever install it on the road.

If i buy the house and i cant play online that's my social/ relaxing time gone!

Does anyone else game online with a slow speed? whats it like? i have a ps4 and play fifa and call of duty.

I am at odds at what to do!

I just dont get how they can build brand new houses and flats. (4 bed houses round there going for 600k) and no fast broadband!

So you think its will be useless online?

Buy the house and put that before call of duty or games!! I would.

Your life though so do what you feel best.

That's what I do in the evenings etc so if I can't do that I will be bored.

Oooooh this is annoying. I know u are right but gaming and internet are my hobbies.

Buying a house with your fiance is one of the biggest, life-changing decisions you will make in your life. When you say you have found the "perfect" house I would assume it is due to a combination of some or all of location, neighbourhood, proximity to schools/transport/shops/pub, peaceful area etc etc. The question you need to ask yourself is whether gaming is more important to you than any/all of those factors. I will confess I have no interest in gaming so can't really comment on how important a part of your life it is, but we all have hobbies/interests so maybe it is a deal breaker. I am an avid cook and I guess if the "perfect" house didn't/couldn't have adequate kitchen facilities then maybe it would be enough to walk away from it. If I couldn't have Fox Sports would it stop me buying a house .... probably not.

I think you know the answer to your own question mate.....

Do you know anyone nearby with fibre? A directional antenna can share WiFi a long distance but you will probably increase latency.

it's not just gaming, bb is as important as gas or electricity (maybe more important as you could get an oil tank or generator)

you can't do anything without a decent internet connection these days

I used to dream of living in a corridor! But seriously, Frank, if there are plenty of houses in the surrounding area without fiber, Shirley it will be made available sooner rather than later.

Or you could always play

I suffer with this situation at present. You get weeks where it is fine and you have no issues then some weeks it may disconnect or be too slow a few times in a particular week meaning you have to reset the connection. To be honest it isn't as bad as a I thought it would be

I spoke with the neighbours today.

One streams Netflix with no issue but next door said the internet is useless.

The one that streams Netflix invited as in and I asked her to do a speed test. The results were 45 ping 1.8down can't remember what up was. It's rubbish yet she is able to stream Netflix with no buffering and HD quality. Is that even possible? Unless she didn't know what she was doing.

I tested my playstation 4 on my sisters 10mb connection. FIFA was very jittery but cod was fine.

I'd say she doesn't know what she's talking about.

It's probably set to auto quality and she thinks it's hd because it looks better than the shoddy compression on ITV4

I saw it myself and it was in HD. I didnt ask her what she was watching it through. Maybe she was just watching it through Sky plus and thought it was running through the internet! She didnt seem to know much.

House first I would say, despite even myself being an avid gamer, if you love it that much.

As an option, what is the cell coverage like there? Could you not grab a 4G modem or such, that would beat the current net speeds that you have.

Yeh I have a 4g router for work. I tried and the speeds are better. Just concerned how stable the connection would be. Games don't just go by download and upload speeds.

Aye very true, but I would have thought the latency would not be so bad on 4G?

Here on 3G my phone hovers from 20ms if lucky to 50ms and tbf for gaming that is decent really. I would imagine 4G provides better if you have good coverage but yes as you said it would depend on how stable it would be.

That said, COD would be fine upto 133 imo maybe a bit more but you would need to adjust to the lead etc.

we're moving soon, I kyboshed a cottage because there wasn't fibre, the wife wasn't happy

its not gaming, I need it for work

haha i know the feeling. Mrs wasn't happy either.

I also need it for work but a normal connection would have been ok.
