If they had signed: Jack Grealish

Going to do one of these every Friday until I become bored of it.

It’s the final days of the Summer 2018 window. We manage to complete the signing of Jack Grealish from Aston Villa for £25M.

At that point we have won our first 3 games of the season (Saudi Sportswashing Machine A 2-1, Fulham H 3-1, Man Utd A 3-0). We are in the Champions League group stage draw in to the group of death with Inter Milan, PSV & Barcelona.

What does Grealish do for us in the 2018/19 Season and beyond?

Where does Pochettino play him with Dele, Eriksen & Son in the side?

How do the clubs fortunes change over the next few seasons?

He goes mental and shoots the other players then himself.

Who knows? We'd have probably got more money selling eriksen early. Played him over son. Son then gets depressed and pushes for a move?

There are plenty of what if's. If clough had come to us instead of going to leeds we wouldn't have had neil.
If moore had joined us.
If souness had stayed.

The sad reality is that it was the 18/19 season that the Dele soft tissue injuries kicked in. Dele had 6 separate injuries that season and missed 110 days. Even when he played he was managing recovery of things like hamstrings. Wanyama was shot at that point. Winksy was struggling with that ankle issue whilst Dembele had that ankle ligament injury in Nov. His last game for the club. Then to add to it all, Dier had his appendix out in December and had a year of complications. Then Kane got injured late season and was a shadow of his brilliant self in the CL final.

So the unfortunate reality is that we wouldn't have had to worry so much about accommodating all of these players and leaving any on the bench. A fit Grealish would have been accommodated into our setup. Probably not the right player in hindsight as Sonny seemed to be the one that was always fit and available. If we had bought the right sided equivalent of Grealish then that might have been more balanced. Ditto with Saka owning the left side and competing with Sonny. Not the right fit either.

Controversially, I will always say that we needed better than Moura in that right channel in those years. We bought him in Jan 2018. Had we found another Sonny, but for the right, that's where I could have seen our history being a little different. Can you imagine if we had got Mo Salah in the summer of 2017? That's when he made the move from Roma to Pool. Bernardo Silva moved from Monaco to City and played in that right channel at the same time. Mahrez moved a little later in 2018 from Leicester C to Man C. We needed to solve for that position and find a right sided attacker who would work within our financial constraints. None of the 3 I mention would have fitted that. There must have been a player out there though.

Great post.
I vaguely recall back in 2016 people being disappointed Monaco beat us 2-1 twice before Xmas, when they had Bernardo Silva, Joao Moutinho, Radamel Falcao etc playing for them.

So many what-ifs it is impossible to say what might have happened, all we know is City absolutely ruined football since 2010 or whatever, and should be decimated back to oblivion. Below League 2, with massive fines, sell all players, transfer ban, chop them up and call them Bury FC. Absolute MotherFarmers have set Spurs back 30 years.

Seek to recall that Poch viewed Grealish as the long term replacement for Dembele.

Think he would have played a lot LW with Son #9 in Kanes absence and in the Dele role though.
