Following on from Markys Eurodisney aka serious relationship thread ;) and seeing as we have a London thread, though *** would be good to have a thread on damn holidays and suggestions etc from others.

I need advice from anyone who has been to Montreal or from the Canadian contingent on this board, now im going to Montreal just before Christmas, always wanted to go, ive been to Toronto (which I loved) and Edmonton but Montreal has always fascinated me. Money is no object (within reason of course) so any suggestions on a conveniently located to stay at? should I stay in the old area or new area? What are some of the sights to go to etc?

Also need some suggestions for a september break, I was thinking Croatia as heard good things but need somewhere quiet like a pause in life. Serenity.
 
off to Latvia for 4 weeks on Friday love it out there right next to the water with amazing beaches. Only problem is we will come back to be homeless haha not my finest hour.

For your september break you sound like you want just a short hall destination I would suggest going to Budapest finding a nice hotel with spa treatments and just relaxing my cuddly friend. Never been but I think it sounds like a nice relaxing break or maybe Vienna, stay in a 5 star hotel have some walks round the city and the weather should be warm but not hot and not so many tourists late September.

We are looking at going to California next summer the boy is so excited he look like he will explode. My dream holiday would be Japan in the spring to see the trees in blossom and then have a look round a country that looks absolutely mental(in a good way)

My favourite place on the planet Marky. Absolutely gorgeous.

When you go back, go to Tranquilo bar in Perissa. Can't beat sitting there of an evening watching the moon come up over the ocean rinking B-52s, listening to chilled out music and eating fantastic food.

Could I have some tips on where to stay, etc please
 
Both times I've stayed it's been in Perissa, on the SE side of the island.

First hotel we stayed in was Hotel Marianna, which I loved. Owners were very friendly and it was close to the beach. - http://www.marianna-hotel.com/
Second one was Smaragdi, which was probably a nicer hotel - but a bit of a walk to the restaurants/bars in Perissa (only 15 mins or so). Also seemed a bit noisier.

As I said my favourite place to chill was Tranquilo bar in Perissa. Amazingly friendly owners/staff, great drinks/food/music.

There's nice restaurants/shopping in Fira and Oia, with stunning sunsets over the caldera.

Also see if you can get one of boat cruises that go around the caldera. They normally stop for an amazing home-made picnic lunch, climb to the top of the volcanic mound and then take you for a swim in the hot springs. The hotels normally have information on these. You can also get a little boat from Perissa around this huge rock/cliff thing to the town of Kamari (where the airport is) which has some nice pubs/bars/restaurants as well. Just don't miss the boat back to Perissa (if you're staying there) or you'll need to get a taxi.

What time of year are you going? We went in mid May which was perfect as everything was starting to open for the new season but it wasn't too manically busy.
 
no holidays for me this summer - am going to Amsterdam to celebrate my 30th though, later on in the year. Amsterdam Dance Event is on at the same time which should be fun :p

I grew up in Vermont in the US, about an hour and 45 minute drive from Montreal. It's a great city that essentially has two parts. The first is the section with the pubs, shopping, and strip clubs, which can be a great night out. The main streets near there if I am remembering correctly are Peel Street., St. Catherine Street., and Rue Sherbrooke West. There is also Old Montreal, which has outstanding stone buildings, gardens, museums, etc. It's almost like there are two distinct cities. There is also a large casino, aptly named Casino de Montreal, which is on an island called Parc des Iles in the middle of the St. Lawrence River just east of downtown Montreal. I'd have to think if you wanted more specific suggestions, but I remember there being a perfectly nice Sheraton near the Bell Center (where the Montreal Canadiens play) that is convenient to sightseeing in the city.
 
**** going abroad these days far too risky getting on a plane nowadays. I'm off to Bournemouth in September that'll do me ta very much.

I arrived in Japan for the first time the night before the earthquake (March 10). Spent 2 weeks there in March this year volunteering. It's an amazing way to see the affected areas and do some good. People are still very much suffering.

Yep thats why im so fascinated, its a cultural yet modern type of city. At first glance reminds me of Melbourne but remains to be seen. The city definitely intrigues me and cannot wait. Been to Toronot and Edmonton, Edmonton not great but loved Toronto and the girls seem to love the Brits which is a bonus haha.

I think I am looking towards the Bell Centre area as I imagine most things are in close proximity.

Im hoping there is a hockey game too that I could go to but not sure of hockey seasons etc.
