Hiking/Walking Poles

Dorothy

Willem Korsten
I've got a torn cartilage due to be operated on in late March. In the meantime life must go on and it often involves hiking up and down hills with the a 'heavyish' backpack on. Wondering if anyone has much knowledge of hiking poles? I'm not expecting to use them as crutches but imagine taking some weight of won't hurt and will help when it comes to rehab.

I'm 90kg and require a 120cm pole. I was looking at these: http://www.headtothehills.co.uk/outdoor-clothing-specialist/product.php/1072/leki_micro_vario_carbon
or even the non variable 120cm version. Will they be strong enough?

Torn Cartilage where?

I have a pole that I bought from mountain warehouse last year although they no longer sell the one I have. I originally bought one because I do a lot of walking for my nature photography hobby and have an arthritic knee. It certainly helped take the pressure off. Its been very handy recently as the countryside here is currently like a swamp and the pole is great for helping to pull myself through the mud and also stop me falling flat on my face.

I'd get a cheap one and see how you get along with it, first.

They are good for fending off vicious dogs whilst the owners shuffle up to you saying "he's only snarling because he wants to say hello, he almost never bites"
