High Street Betting Shops

The problem with this is that it's a massively flawed system. Let's say your bet is £50. The whole system is based around whether you win the first bet or not. If you win, you bet £50 again, if you lose you keep doubling until you "win" which is simply getting your original bet back.

Without going in to the maths of it if you get the red/black or odd/even wrong 6 times in a row (which will happen more than once every 64 attempts) you need to stump up £3200 just to win back your original £50.

Also if you look long term (i.e. you do this every day for years) you are likely to encounter a stage where you will have to put down hundreds of thousands just to win back your original £50 bet.

Theoretically you are correct, but in reality this system is useless. For anyone with enough money to do it, the amount they would win would be trivial.

If you're just playing to double it you need to calculate exactly how much you need to increase each bet with. Works better with something like roulette, but I doubt you'd be allowed any more than 2 or 3 attempts.

Not all of them, no.

They're getting few and far between in the South though.

Depends what part of the south you're talking about. Seems to be a fair few in Southampton. There's a road, not far from me, with at least 4 betting shops, at least 2 99p/£1 stores and at least a couple of "Cash Converters", which seems to be the other type. The rest is mostly comprised of take away establishments....Classy road!!

Sorry, I meant that high streets without them are few and far between.

In my utopia you can't bet on sport. There would be no bookies. No scratchcards. No cash converters. No pay day loan shops. It is all a pile of feral excrement that spreads misery and prays on the weak. Sport has largely been destroyed by greed and much of the blame lies with the gambling industry.

I'd also plan to ensure that there is availability for independent pop-ups, ideally not those flogging knock off phone covers and other assorted sh*t. Coerce landlords to either use it or sell it. Create a taskforce to manage the process of offering short term lets, pop ups etc. It won't be long before the powers in the East have forced High Streets to largely shut down so they can fill the empty units with takeaways and nail bars.

The only reason property prices are on the rise slightly is because half of Britain is being bought from abroad.

Certainly the case in london where some new builds are for sale in Asia before going on the open market here, i know im a right winger and i never want to become a caricature of myself. But i have to say i find it very odd that we as a country especially a small one with limited space should be making it easier for persons who do not live here to buy here then we do the indigenous population.

Any reason why this should happen? Seems very strange.

Well i guess they are marketing them to the people with money in Asia as an investment in Europe in what has always been a stable country with a strong history of a strong housing market. In the process they inflate the housing market and push out local people trying to get onto the housing ladder.

Is happening and this is not a political type rant, just factual it is actually happening right now in London.

I'm sure Roy can give plenty of examples of how people descend into full blown gambling addicts.

Personally I think people should exercise some personal responsibility. I stick to betting on what I know i.e. football, tennis, Olympics, NFL that kind of thing. I don't **** around with virtual betting or betting machines, it's like throwing money down the drain.

this.

i dont think ive ever used a betting machine in my life.

Apparently large percentages of UK property are never even seeing the UK market. They are now solely being marketed in China among other places. Interesting that at the same time our Government(s) are lobbying to build even more homes on Green belt land. It is just the simple science of economics. We are a group of Islands, our landmass is only shrinking. Our green spaces are only shrinking. Our cities swell, our population grows and every resource in the country will be stretched because of it. Prisons, Schools, Doctors, A&E, Roads, Public Transport, Water, Power, Telecommunications etc ad infinitum. It is a future reality. Still plenty of room but people's quality of life will only degrade as the years pass. \o/

Basically a way to prevent stupid people from having money. They are programmed to not let you win in the long run.

Not necessarily stupid people. A close mate of mine called me last weekend telling me how he went up to a bloke on a FOBT showing his credit of £1300. Telling him to take the money the bloke said to my mate I'm still down, later telling him he had lost £15k..

Now I've used these machines before and know regular users. These machines are known as the 'crack' of gambling for a reason. People lose control and make irrational decisions. Should be banned imo.

All is takes is to be put in the right social situation or being in financial worry for a user to receive their first 'hit'.

No one is forcing them to use those machines. People use them and enjoy them and don't get carried away. Why should they be denied the right to play on a machine because some people can't control themselves?

Because it becomes an addiction.

They nickname these machines as the 'crack of gambling' for a reason.

People are not forced to play these machines, this is true but ask yourself why there's a higher amount of betting shops being opened in poorer areas than that of towns like where Cameron resides? Simple, people financially deprived and in desperate need see gambling as a possible way of accumulating funds and getting themselves out of a tight spot.

I've played on these machine before and luckily I'm fortunate enough to have a well-paid job and so walked away without too much damage. I can tell you from experience however that there were times I would say to myself I would go in and place £20 on an odd occasion to find I would keep on inserting money in the hope of getting that chance to win. It is only after when you have no money left and walk out of the place do you come to the realisation of your actions.

I respect your opinion but unless you have played these machines you are very much on the outside of the box looking in. FOBT have been the subject of reviews from many gambling charities and government funded projects to ban them or at least limit them further. Problem is however is that gambling (especially at the time of recession) brings in a healthy stream of funds to the government’s coffers.

Betting shops also 'play down' the amount of income generated from these machines and do NOT call the police even when someone picks up metal stalls and smashes the screen of one (like I have witnessed) to defend against the negative image they bring.

The truth of the matter is these machines are the biggest earners for bookmakers by far and for reason. At least before you had to make a night out/sign up to go to a casino. Now the casino is on our doorstep.

My two cents.

You're argument is flawed for 2 reasons.

1) they can just gamble on the internet. If someone is stupid enough to think they can gamble thier way to prosperity during tough times, they'll find a way.

2) it shouldn't be the governments job to protect people from thier own bad decisions. IMO an adult should have the right to do whatever he wants provided he isn't infringing on the rights of others to do the same. If someone wants to **** all his money away on cigarettes, alcohol or roulette then that is thier choice

I've never used a FOBT, but I have bet small amounts on Sports in bookies and online..

Richie, are you saying that Fixed Odds Betting is available online? as spursman17's post seems to focus on FOBTs.

I guess my question really is; is there a big difference to the average gambler between using a fobt and going to the william hill website and going in the casino/games/vegas sections?

I can just as easily play slots, blackjack or roulette online, so I'd argue that no there is no difference between FOBTs and online games

Im totally against the opening of betting shops too but we'll never be able to do much about it. We get sent a memo at work every 3/4 months offering 5k if we can recommend n empty property that goes on to be opened as a new WH.

I strted a thread a few months back on the FOBT's I think they are disgusting. However, they account for around 60% of business now. I'm constantly looking for another job and am even prepared to take a small paycut but with a family its bloody hard.
