Giovani Lo Celso

I think the Copa America has been the hold-up

Saw Betis linked to Fekir this morning. Could also be a Lyon/Dembele/Mendes type situation where they want to secure a replacement first.

A couple of weeks back all the noise was that the move was pending, I wouldnt be shocked if it turned out everything was waiting on him coming through the Copa America and them getting in someone like Fekir to replace him.

I wonder whether the sale price going up means we don't quite have the money until we have offloaded a player or two. The fact that Betis have signed players and seem to be continuing to sign players is a good sign. They aren't a rich enough club to afford to do this without recouping fees from sales. If Lo Celso really does have his heart set on us then I think Betis will have to get a bit more realistic with their asking price as the window moves on.

I must confess that I was surprised to see all the positive noises being made about potential big signings for us early in the window. It seemed unusual for us to be spending big money and also spending it early. Then I started to wonder whether Pochettino has asked Levy for significant funds this season to sign a group of young players this season, promising that he will then be able to operate at a reasonably low level of net spend over the next couple of years. From a financial fair play perspective I think we actually have a good opportunity to spend big this summer (Considering both PL and UEFA rules). Our income has increased considerably which will allow us to really ramp up our wage bill and our debt is all directly attributed to infrastructure projects which is allowable (and indeed encouraged) under the fair play rules. It is conceivable that upon completion of the stadium we still had some headroom on the loan facility that that we arranged and the revenue coming in from the now operational stadium is considerably higher than the projections (for example - already securing the rugby matches, along with the huge improvement of food and drink sales compared to Wembley on which the projections were made).

I don't think running afoul of FFP has ever been the issue with us. It has always been Levy's operating model for the club to generate healthy revenues and I believe we will still be constrained by that, albeit not to the extent we were constrained previously, since as you correctly mentioned we have additional revenue streams now.

And I have a feeling that this year we will not wait so much on player sales to fund player purchases. I could see us buying Lo Celso prior to selling Eriksen. I do think the hold-up is a combination of the player's involvement in the Copa America, which means he wouldn't be able to join at the start of pre-season anyway so no rush, and the fact that Levy is trying to get down the price from the extortionate amount Betis are asking.

The English FFP rules can be quite restrictive. Clubs are only allowed to increase their wage bill by a set amount each season (is it £7 million?) plus any increases they make from non PL broadcasting rights. It makes sense to jump the wage bill significantly in a season where non broadcasting revenue jumps up.

The wage thing is £7m, that seasons increase or compared to a base year of 2013, this means we don't need to increase wages in the year that non broadcasting revenue jumps up but have the flexibility to do it at a later date. i.e. if revenue from non broadcasting was 75 million in 2013 but its now 300m we can spend all the 225 regardless of what year it is generated.

I think the Bale/7 signings window we spent out over £100m, before recouping later. It doesn't matter on the books if its in the same financial year. And we're in a position to move money around other Tavistock companies if cash flow is an issue. E.g. we've seen THFC and TH Properties Ltd move money between themselves to help manage lending and tax

I guess we've spend £65m on Ndombele and Clarke, and are looking at another c.£80m on Lo Celso and Sessegnon. £145m outlay with a expected return of maybe £30m from Wanyama, Janssen and Nkoudou combined? It's possible, but would be quite unprecedented in our recent history.

Think you're forgetting the Eriksen sell too GB. We wont be getting Le Celso and keep Eriksen.

A lot of what you describe and what I’ve seen are essentially decision making issues. These decision making mistakes are pretty common for young defenders, especially at CB as it’s quite a difficult and specialist position that takes years to master.

With game time and experience in confident he’ll start to eliminate these kind of mistakes. And then when you couple that with his obvious footballing ability, I genuinely think we’re on to a winner.
That's a pretty measured reply, and I'd like it if we could make good use of his obvious talent. Whether that would be in defense or another position remains to be seen, I have my doubts about him as a CB anyhow.

Both are young, and Sanchez is in no way error-free either, but he has something I like and that we haven't seen amongst our central defenders in a long time: pace. Skill AND speed would allow us to press higher up the pitch in more games. With one more year of proper guidance and mentorship from our top class center backs, that could be a winner indeed.

So by that logic your expecting a striker to be signed to replace llorente.

Who may I ask?

Not necessarily. There are plenty of options to cover Kane - Moura and Sonny for starters, Dele potentially at a push, and maybe Parrott.

Who replaces Eriksen? His skillset is pretty unique and we certainly don’t have a like-for-like for him in the current squad.

As I’ve said, Lo Celso is most probably his replacement. I’m struggling to see why else it hasn’t been concluded, apart from Eriksen not being sold, as we’ve apparently been negotiating for weeks and Argentina’s involvement in the Copa has been done for for a while. I suppose it’s possible he’s on holiday, but that didn’t stop N’Dombele signing for us while he was ‘off’.

Anyway, just my thoughts...

He hasn't signed yet because we haven't agreed a fee.

So your expecting lo celso to only come if eriksen leaves, with no ceballos and no extra striker coming in.

So therefore if eriksen stays you are expecting no lo celso, no ceballos and no new striker.

Doesn't make sense does it.

Lo celso is coming regardless of what happens with eriksen. If eriksen then leaves, ceballos, someone similar or a striker will be signed.

Yep, I’m not expecting Ceballos to come in at all. It doesn’t feel right to me, particularly as it blocks Skipp’s pathway.

And yes, if Eriksen doesn’t go, I’m expecting us to do very little other in midfield / up top than potentially sign Sessegnon.

As I say, I could be wrong...

I agree with @DaveT316. I doubt that we can afford Lo Celso if Eriksen stays. I also agree with him that we may not see a direct replacement for Llorente.

I think a lot people vastly over-rate Skipp's potential, or certainly his current level. Only one opinion but I haven't seen Skipp display one stand-out ability as yet - passing, tackling, shooting, dribbling, pace etc. I dont think he's made mistakes or cost us in game which he's played, but at some point that won't be enough. In my view, Ceballos is more first-team ready than Skipp, with great passing and is very Winks-like in terms of style and development.

Skipp is obviously a few years younger - I think people need to ignore him for a couple years, give him a lot more time and space to see how he develops. I'd like to see him go on loan or play U23s football rather than try to play in a standard which I don't think he's ready for

I was trying to think of CMs who doesnt have any stand-out strengths but who has done well in order to dis-prove myself. I ended up with Jordan Henderson who I dont think has any stand-out talents, but he is physically big, works hard and is a leader. Skipp needs a lot more time and freedom to develop rather than be put into PL football

For me Skipp is a young Scott Parker. A genuine alrounder with a slight defensive bias

One thing about Ceballos is that he seems reluctant to leave Madrid/Spain. So there's a chance that even if we do get him, he'll do a Fabregas at Arsenal and will always be aiming to get a move back. So that might nicely intersect with Skipp hitting 20/21.

I have seen so little of Skipp I could not tell you what sort of player he is. But I do hope he gets more game time next season even if it means leaving on loan. Is important he plays games.

Scott Parker isn't a bad shout; though again, Skipp is only 18 and Parker played say 3-4 years of decent football at Charlton before going to cheatski aged 24. I really dont think that given our level, we should expect him to contribute massively. Send him on loan or something, but dont expect him to play much at all for a year or two

If I was Ceballos, I wouldnt leave Real! 22 years old, Spanish international, playing increasing amounts...why would you leave?!?
