Gedson Fernandes

We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement for the 18-month loan of Gedson Fernandes from Benfica with an option to make the transfer permanent.

The midfielder will wear the number 30 shirt for the remainder of this season.

A product of the Benfica academy, Gedson made his first team debut last season and was named the Primeira Liga's Best Young Player of the Month for August. He went on to finish the season as a league champion, making 22 appearances as The Eagles secured their 37th Primeira Liga title. In total, he has made 53 appearances in all competitions for Benfica, scoring three times.

On the international stage, he has made more than 50 appearances for Portugal, representing his country at every age group from Under-15 upwards, including winning two caps for the senior team to date. He was also a member of the Portugal side that won the UEFA European Under-17 Championship in 2016.
 
Wearing the same number that Sandro wore. Hopefully he can add his energy and aggression and avoid the physio room.
Wonder how long before we see him play?

The lad obviously has talent, lets hope it doesn't take long for him to show it on the pitch.
 
Be interesting to test Poch's theory that players need 6-12 months to be ready for this league with Fernandes.

I know nothing about the lad but good that we have sought to address a problem area early in the window.

The only reason he is here is Jorges Mendes.

His only assets are his speed and ability to dribble. He'll be outmuscled in the Premier League. More Onomah than Sissoko.

There goes another non homegrown squad place.

And that's a ridiculous loan fee. Most to agents no doubt.
 
Hasn't been picked for a league game since October after falling out of favour... doesnt sound too positive. Still, willing to give anyone a chance in CM right now.

Give it 18 months and Daniel will take another run at this £55m!! in this 'contract'. Benfica is broke and has such serious debt problems.

He started quite a lot of games at Benfica the season before though. One never knows all of the reasons why a player is dropped. It could be that he was poor, it could be that the manager wanted to play a different way that didn't suit him, it could be a contractual/agent dispute. It could be anything.

The fact that he got capped by Portugal at such a young age says to me that he must have something about him. Lets see what he is like over the next 18 months. If he doesn't work out then it has cost us very little.
