True legend.
Id put him on a list with Michael Palin as someone's who should replace the monarchy as our head of state. In a world where famous people are often proven to have feet of clay, my whole belief system and faith in mankind would be shattered if Gary Mabbutt was anything other than I believe Gary Mabbutt to be.
An absolute legend and gentleman.
I remember that. Those that were outside spent the whole time respectfully clapping. Was a lovely thing to experienceHe's an absolute credit to the club.
On the subject of praise and a similar-ish topic, back in March I got an email from the club about the 'In Memoriam' thing that they do (I think they've done it in the past?) and if any Spurs fans have passed away in the last 12 months to submit them. I put in my Dad, who died last August, and a photo and thought it would be a nice thing but didn't really think a whole lot about it.
They did the service at half time of the Leeds match and a few days later they sent a video of it being played in the stadium as well as the actual video. About 9 minutes of photos of Spurs fans who've passed. When I saw my Dad on the big screen of the stadium it hit me so much harder than I thought it would when I submitted him. I was absolutely chuffed...he would have been blown away. Him on the big screen at the Spurs stadium. It was only about 3~5 seconds...but man it meant so much to my family and me.
It's something so simple but I have no doubt the 10s, 100s, 1000s of people connected to those who were displayed felt similar emotions, and the club deserve a lot of credit for doing it.
Worth sharing this again too I think:
The team might test us a lot, but I think they do really get it.
My brother has met him and said he is exactly the person you hoped he would be.I briefly met him in the Spurs shop he was there signing together with Ozzie, Ledley and Sandro. I said he was,'my captain' as i grew up and watched him from the stands. He just gave a broad smile - he's my fave, for sure, and such a humble man! Works hard too
Born in the city my son went to uni
I have all the time in the world for this quite simply fantastic human being
