Gary Mabbutt Always my Captain

loved watching him play, always gave 100%

saw him driving out of the lane a few years back and he was signing some autographs through his car window. I said " hey mabbs, you're not going anywhere near Barnet on your way home, I need a lift to Hadley Green", I expected him to laugh and tell me to feck off, he said to me "mate, I live in Arkley but I can take you through to Barnet church if you'd like"

didn't take the lift as thought it was a bit too cheeky of me, but what a legend for even considering it

I try and judge my favourite players over a number of seasons, so even though Bale, Klinnsman, Modric , Gascoigne are undoubtedly up there with the best , I go with the ones I've seen regularly through thick and thin .

Mabbs is in my top 5 all the time, with Perryman, Hoddle ,King,
Hughton . Maybe not the best 5 players but definitely the best 5 players I've been proud to say have played for my club.

Was at The Lane for his final day as a player - very emotional. Having Type 1 diabetes myself he has been a total inspiration to me since I was a kid.

Have you read his book, it covers his struggle with diabetes and there is a chapter where some players found him on the floor of his kitchen. Its several years since i read it but i believe it was called " Against all Odds". Great read.

Yeah alright posh boy. I was a Dollis Valley boy myself....

Fantastic! What a tremendous man.

Best player he played with -Gazza 90/91 season
Best player he played against - Marco van Basten

He talked for about 1/2 hour, I could have listened to him all day.

He was told at 17 by three diabetes specialists that he would never play professional football again, so they sought out a 4th opinion and he said "I reckon with the correct diet and medication we can make it work"

When he signed for Spurs Billy Nic phoned him and invited him for a chat, KB was the manager and told him they thought he was a talent (although KB hadn't seen him play, he was signed on Billy Nic's recommendation) but it would be 2 or 3 years before he would be ready - 2 weeks later in pre season someone got injured and Mabbs was asked to play - he did so well he never left the first team.

The first time he saw the first team squad in the flesh was his first day, he had only seen them on tv before and was a bit starstruck - Stevie P, Ossie, Archibald, Ghod, Maxi, Roberts, Chrissie H, etc.

He is a hero in Coventry after the 87 cup final, even has a fanzine named after his knee.

In 87 he was out of contract, he was offered Man U (Ferguson), Liverpool (KD), Atletico Madrid and even George Graham wanted him at Arsenal. He chose to stay because that 87 team was so good he thought we would go on to win more. He has no regrets though - he clearly loves the club, referred to it as "my club" and "us" several times.

He was gutted when Wenger went to Arse, felt he should have come to Spurs as he made Arsenal play the Spurs way (and win!)

Talked at length about the 91 final, Gazza's injury, TV's half time team talk (the best one he ever heard), and how he felt for Des Walker scoring the own goal to give us the Cup.

Gazza had the best football brain on the pitch and the worst brain off it! Loves him to bits and is still good friends with him.
E.g.. Gazza thought the Gaza Strip was one of his old kits!!

He also talked about his recent heart bypass, had some pain, thought it was indigestion, left it a week, went to the docs for a check up on a Friday, by Monday he was being operated on. Considers himself v lucky to be alive.

......didn't get to shake his hand though :( !!
