Gareth Bale

And that's just the start of it. Every mistake he makes will be scrutinised by the Real Madrid fans. And if he makes one too many... they'll hound him mercilessly. I get his ambition to join a big side, really I do. But he has swapped being the best player in the third or fourth best team in England (hey! I'm a Spurs fan, humour me!) to become the second player (if that!) in the second best best team in Spain? Meh. It's his loss.

Funny to see there is already a mutiny against Bale. His world record transfer fee will always be a big burden for him. Levy is an idiot if he didn't include any clause to buy him back if and when Real sell him.

I hope we never ever pull off anything like that. It was like football's version of "Wall St" starring Perez as Gordon Gecko. We can only hope he gets pulled down, but I doubt it. With disgusting creeps like Sepp Blatter in charge of FIFA, the rich will continue to behave with the level of impunity already seen...if you hope we can pull something like that off mate, you will be hoping for all the filth and the dirt and the **** and the cash and the wreckage that comes with it...nah...they can have it IMO...

Is it too much to ask? It's not like the stage seeps of corruption or anything. And if we've conducted the transfer as honorably as we could, what's stopping us?

Imagine (stupid, but bear with me) one day, we went out and signed...oh, I don't know....yes, Neymar. World-class, world-renowned, arguably one of the top five players in world football. To finance this ,it would need to be done post-new stadium. So, having signed one of the world's best players, and with a futuristic new stadium ready to be filled to the brim with 60,000 happy Spurs fans ready to watch their man juggle a ball for a bit and wave, what do you do as a club? Just unveil him like everyone else, holding a shirt and smiling awkwardly in front of the sprinklers and unclipped bushes at Hotspur Way?

Nah. For once, I'd like us to stamp our mark on the football world.

Sorry mate, you're not telling the truth. No-one writes something like this from a 'limited emotional investment' point of view. You know it. I know it. And this has nothing to do with faith. I never had faith in Bale in that sense, but I loved watching him, I loved his talent,I loved his celebrations and I loved the way in which I allowed myself to believe he had a special place in his heart for our club. And you can never judge who will hit you like that...I think it'd be foolish to try.

You'll fall again mate...

Quite probably. Still, it doesn't hurt to try. So I'll putter along, viewing most games with a cold, analytical eye, until at some point in the next few months Holtby scores and then absolutely sprints to the corner with that great goofy grin on his face as the fans rush to the front of the stands to congratulate him. And then I'll probably go 'Aw, Holtby! The lad loves us! Look how happy he is playing and scoring for us! He even wants to get one over 'Woolwich'!' and put trust and faith in the lad, trust that will then be shattered when he moves to Bayern in 2015 after skipping training and claiming he'll never wear our shirt again.

And then I'll resolve never to get burned like that again, and watch games with a cold, unemotional eye, until at some point Pritchard scores and absolutely sprints to the corner doing a 'heart' sign, and I'll think 'Aw, Pritchard!'........

Someday, club power will return and players won't get dingdonged around by those ****ing agents. Someday, we'll see players thinking about what's best for the club as well as what's best for themselves, and I don't just mean monetarily. Someday.

Sigh. Until then, this damn cycle will keep repeating, I suppose. Still, for now I am cold and analytical - come back in a few months or so. :)

So he's fit and raring to go I read. I guess joining Real Madrid heals all wounds, including nagging 3 month injuries =)

Looking at the comments carefully, I found a gem...

Cristiano Ronaldo Thank you Özil for everything you gave to the club.. We will never forget you, You'll be missed.. Remember that we will be happy to have you back one day. Good luck with the Gunners
You're great

And it's the official Cristiano Ronaldo Facebook. Looks like him and Bale will get on just fine then!

Transfer news: Rafael van der Vaart says Gareth Bale is not worth £85m, and is not on the same level as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo

Dutchman was team-mates with Bale at Tottenham

Rafael van der Vaart, who has played for both Tottenham and Real Madrid, has questioned the price tag of his former team-mate Gareth Bale after his world-record £85m transfer to the Bernabeu, and does not think he is at the same level as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo – yet.

Van der Vaart featured alongside Bale for Tottenham between 2010 and 2012, and played in Madrid for two seasons from 2008 to 2010. He now plays in the Bundesliga for Hamburg.

"€100m (£85m) is a bit much," Van der Vaart was quoted in Dutch news outlet NOS. "You should ask yourself if a player is worth that amount at all.

"I've played with him, but I couldn't see that he was worth 100 million back then. He did develop quite good, but still he has to prove his worth at Real.

The 30-year-old believes that while Bale to not at the same level as the world’s best players yet, he hopes the Welshman will flourish in La Liga.

"You can't compare him with Messi and Ronaldo, because they're from another level," Van der Vaart said.

"If you make so many goals for so many years and win all these prizes they have won, it's not fair to compare anybody else with those guys.

"I've been in his situation, only Real paid a little less money for me back then. I would like to wish him all the best at Real Madrid, because Gareth is a great lad."

Van der Vaart has pulled out of the Netherlands squad to face Andorra and Estonia because of a hamstring injury.

Take it with a pinch of salt. A lot of posters are new RM fans (think Croatian fans when we had Modric). No biggy big.

He is German but ethnically Turkish - Real have ****ed over 3 ethnically players that are Turkish (Altintop, Sahin and now Ozil) so the backlash on FB is natural.

I agree with one of VDV's points, Bale can't be compared to CR and Messi as he has not won everything they have, the caveat being that neither of those players have only played for Southampton and Spurs have they?

It's a silly argument really.
