Gareth Bale

Re: Is Bale a striker?

wouldn't Bale be cut out for the 'Hulk' role from AVB's 433 at Porto, if that's what we are planning on switching to?

just sign that Colombian fella they had playing up front to play off him and we'll be sorted. . . what happened to him anyway?

Re: Is Bale a striker?

Bale as a #9, I'm not sure about but he does remind me a little of Marco van Basten in his play.

Re: Is Bale a striker?

Bale = CR7, same type of player, winger that drifts into middle, most dangerous when running at opposition.

Don't watch enough of Madrid (or Spanish football in general) to comment, any Madrid watchers that would like to detail how formation wise they accommodate Ronaldo? Certainly not as a "striker" even though he outscores all of their recognized strikers

They start him outwide. The difference is that a] madrid create a shedload of chances/goals and b] ronaldo has been playing a goalscoring winger move for years, so is more versed in the movement required to get goals from a wide position.

Re: Is Bale a striker?

Bale is the closest player there has been to Thierry Henry since he left the premier league (probably in the world too) in terms of his overall style/ability/attributes. Therefore i think he would do very well playing up front on a more permanent basis.

Having said that tho, when Henry was in his prime, most teams including Arsenal played 4-4-2. I think if Henry was around these days, there's a valid argument to suggest that he would be played mainly as a wide forward in a 4-3-3 (or other variations of this formation).
At the end of the day, Bale has phenomenal pace (other than perhaps walcott, i cant think of anyone else in a top league in europe who is faster), hes tall/fairly strong and powerful, and although he probably does not have as much technical ability/touch as the likes of silva/cazorla/modric etc, he is still technically very very proficient, similar to Henry. Therefore, i think is position/role should be selected on a more game by game basis, depending on the attributes of the opponent. but yes, i would like to see him up front more. against certain teams, he could really be effective by being as close as possible to the goal.

a. Spurs creates quite a bit, we just have brick strikers to back up Bale
b. Only time changes that, but Ronaldo went from a decent winger to putting in crazy numbers in a season and a half

Still think it's been clear that both the player and managers (from Harry) have modeled/developed Bale around a Ronaldo mold.

I wouldnt say we create quite a bit, but point taken. Out of interest, do you think Bale is capable of getting crazy numbers with us? coz that united team had tevez and rooney alongside ronaldo, much as madrid have world class players alongside him; could the distraction caused by other quality players contribute to his goal tally?

Re: Gareth Bale

'MIDFIELD - GARETH BALE (Tottenham)

Gareth Bale's 22nd goal of the season for Spurs, against Swansea, tells its own story. The Welshman's form is the main reason why Spurs find themselves third in the table. To think that Andre Villas-Boas could finish above Chelsea in the top flight and win the Europa League is enough to make Blues fans' eyes water.
Did you know? He is the first Tottenham player in Premier League history to score 12+ away goals in a single season.'

Re: Is Bale a striker?

Harry said Bales best position will always be LB. I wonder if he'd change that or more likely deny he ever said it.

I do think Bale can get up there, his goal run has really picked up as the season has gone on, and it's not a stretch to see him finish with 20+PL, 25+Overall, and we really haven't spanked anyone this season. To your second point, if we added a couple of other players who could pull the opposition and give Bale even more room, more chance to isolate defenders, his opportunities would increase.

This summer is critical to us (and in my own selfish opinion, Bale as well), a rest, pre season with a team used to AVB's vision, add a Striker and Creative midfielder, return of Sandro and Kaboul. Give Bale a season where he starts with the team built around him, enough quality to hurt the opposition if they over compensate for Bale, I think you continue to see him develop into a great.

Re: Gareth Bale

Watching an interview on SSN with ZZ, he rather likes Bale and couldnt praise him highly enough, funnily enough he works for Madrid..

The tapping up begins...

Re: Gareth Bale

Zinedine Zidane says of all the players this season he has been most impressed by the "unique" talent of Gareth Bale.

Bale has had a fine season

Bale, 23, has been in inspirational form this term and is being tipped for a big-money move in the summer, with both Barcelona and Real Madrid reportedly interested in the Tottenham man.

Zidane, who could join the coaching staff at Madrid next season, went to watch the Wales international in Spurs' Europa League tie against Lyon in February, and was encouraged by what he saw.

"This year the player who's impressed me most is not actually playing in the Champions League. He's playing in the other cup [Europa League], and that's Bale," Zidane said.

"He's unique. He makes things look easy, his pace is frightening, his acceleration is unbelievable because of his ability to go through the gears in very little space. Plus, he's very good technically which is also important. We mustn't forget that he plays football very well!

"And he's really impressed me. I've seen him two or three times live, including recently at Lyon, which wasn't necessarily his best game, but where every time he got the ball he can surprise you."

Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas described Bale as "world class" after his display during the 2-1 win at Swansea at the weekend. Zidane agrees with the Portuguese, although he does not believe he is at the same standard yet as Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, as some have suggested this season.

"He's perhaps not quite at the level of the other two, but he's different," Zidane said. "So personally I don't think he's far off."

Re: Gareth Bale

Bale now has 22 goals and 12 assists in all competitions for Spurs this season giving him a combined total of 34.

Those goals and assists have come from 3,260 minutes played, giving him an average of a vital goal contribution for every 96 minutes he was on the pitch for.

Bale's goals & assists account for 23.29% of Tottenham's totals for the season so far...

Tottenham Hotspur Detailed Player's Statistics 2012-13

THFC6061 - Can you confirm how you compile your assist figures, as something's been bugging me about the figures given for Bale's assists on most website. They're generally listed as three in the PL, him not being credited for some reason with the two assists that were parried shots knocked in by Dempsey (Utd) and Defoe (QPR). Parried shots are on the Fifa list of what designates an assist. Which one is the sixth? I keep seeing it mentioned on other forums - "Yeah, he's good, but he doesn't get any assists!" If only they'd seen the Defoe misses against Sunderland and Fulham, they might understand a bit more.

Highest praise from the best of all time.

Nice quotes from the great man.

Zizou was probably my favourite player too, made the game look so easy even Berbatov looks like a klutz in comparison.
