Fourth - who are we going to beat to it?

It'd be just our luck to finish 4th ahead of Man Utd - but for United to win the Champions League and leave us with Europa League football again.

I was just about to say that will never happen. They'd have to spawn their way to victory and then it all came flooding back.....I need to go to my happy place.

Makes it even more annoying that we couldn't quite win the 3pts against them the other week but hopefully other teams will continue to take points off of them whilst RvP is out...

I think partly this is why Levy has acted now - there is still enough of the season left to finish in the top 4.

Also, we might find out whether AVB was the problem or the solution.

Nice one, clicked on this expecting to see some wise crack saying "shouldn't the thread be changed to 8th?" but actually it's two optimistic posts :)

Good work fellas lets do this

I think Sundays result showed us at last that Liverpool at last have a good side, Chelsea and City will be fighting out the title. So it's the rest we have to beat including the goons. They may be top of the league but I think we can still haul them in, despite our crisis we've only lost two more matches than them. Win the NLD and that ones back, and they have to hit some bad form sometime.

Would love to know a price on us getting top 4 still, I think we are still in with a shout of we get things right

4. Liverpool

IMO. I think the real question should be who we need to beat to get 5th, which I suspect will be Manure and Everton.

I still don't think Liverpool are all that...they have Suarez but we had Bale and it wasn't a top 4 guarantee. Would not be surprised if they tail off a bit in the second half of the season.

True, but neither us nor United have looked very threatening so far this season - and we're almost halfway through. I could very well be wrong, but based on the season so far, I think Liverpool look stronger than us, Manure and Everton.

I don't think Chelsea are all that either - strikers aren't firing and they are conceding goals. Problem is though, they can afford to spend big in January to solve their striker problem.

That's what I think too. He's weighed up all the factors and decided that we have more chance without AVB than with him, and if you ask me he's got it wrong. Turgid football aside it is not as if we were flirting with relegation. Amid all the doom and gloom we were in fact not that far off 4th and it was still a very achievable goal.

AVB has his faults but he is a young man in football terms and could have been 'convinced' to change his almost immovable position with regards to his tactics. I believe he really could have done with a mentor or well respected number 2 to highlight that which is most obvious to the rest of us. There are many ways to skin a cat and if you'd don't adapt your tactics you will fail. It is a shame Sir Bobby wasn't around or even that his relationship with Mourinho hadn't fallen apart. It's his reluctance to admit that his master plan is not in fact perfect that was his Achilles heel. Actually Wenger is/was a bit like that too now that I think about it but his plan A works quite well for the most part.

A change of manager may work if you have the right candidate to step in but it appears we don't have anyone yet. Stupid. Rolling the dice with Sherwood or whomever really is just that, a pure gamble and one which could very easily backfire. If we loose tonight I can imagine the reaction on here later. On top of that the chance that some of our shiny new stars will want out is very much higher. "Who is this Sherwood gringo with the funny accent, eh?"

Surely the better course of action was to reset AVB's targets to include a style more pleasing on the eye and let him finish out the season. Levy could have been working on a suitable replacement in the background in case those targets were not met.

On the other hand, you could argue that's sort of the lamentable point about our squad. If the rest of them had made a full contribution, we probably would have got a CL spot at the end of last season. For me, the current Liverpool side all seem to be pulling their weight, not metaphorically folding their arms while Suárez wins games for them on his own. That's what's likely to make the difference for them, IMO. We'll see, though. A long way to go yet and lots can happen.

Well that sort of points the finger back at the manager then, doesn't it? I don't think anyone doubts that we have a squad full of quality players but for one reason or another, we seem to be less than the sum of our parts.

Indeed, but it is what it is. No point crying over spilt milk, we just have to get on with it and do the best we can.

I'm actually disappointed he is injured as he is by far and away the best player in the league and has no negatives to go with him (unlike others)

We still have a real chance if someone can get the talent we have actually playing, and we're not talking big improvement needed.

Clearly that's what Levy looked at when considering sacking AVB and as with everything it's all about timing. If we have a decent run over Christmas we could be right back in it.

I fully expect Man United to be right back up there too come the end of jan.

I had an argument with a Liverpool fan that United will finish above them and he was so sure about their side... But wouldn't make a bet!! That's me a Spurs fan betting on. United to finish higher than Liverpool
