Football Trivia Question of the Day

not the United Kingdom, but under English rule
France as such was never under English rule (unless you think Henry VI actually ruled it in his minority). Parts of what are now France were under Angevin rule that included the Kingdom of England but a lot of that was actually held in fief of the King of France so pedantically to claim it was ruled by England is historically inaccuraate.

I was referring to the reign of Henry VI, i'm guessing he wasn't that active in policy or tithe, but his name was over the door so to speak.

Who gives a brick. Ireland and UK are seperate countries, ergo Paul McGrath is a foreigner in a UK league.

Which five Republic of Ireland players have won 100 or more full international caps?

Ireland is a British & Irish Isles country so as such, players don't qualify as Foreign.

The unique nature of the historical, political and cultural connections of Ireland to the United Kingdom (of which it was a part until the early 1920s) make it a special case, although today, Ireland is a sovereign independent country.

Fair enough, I hadn't realised you excluded all Irish players.

I agree that its reasonable, although unpopular with some, to call Irish people British as they are part of the British Isles. Its just a looser definition than the more common definition of British as meaning part of the current political state known as the UK. The concept of Britain as in the Empire is very much an entity that included Ireland following the union in 1801. Before then most references were to Great Britain, England or Scotland.

I find it funny that at least one Roman historian referred to the island of Ireland as "Little Britain". a natural name for the smaller counterpart to the island of Great Britain.
