FM 2013: 'Lite' mode streamlines play, adds microtransactions

Football Manager Classic provides less time-consuming experience; Features purchasable add-ons

The next instalment in the Football Manger series will include a new Classic mode - a 'lite' version of Football Manager for those with less time to engage in the game.

Sports Interactive studio manager Miles Jacobson Publisher Sega said the new Football Manager 2013 "marks a seismic shift" in the development of the series.
Football Manager Classic - bundled for free - will allow full seasons to be played out in less than ten hours, marking a significant decrease from the full version of the game. It also includes various arcade-style challenges as well as a new microtransactions model.

For all the new details of the 'full-fat' Football Manager 2013, go here.

Within Classic mode, players also have the option to select a number of challenges designed to test their management skills. Managers can join clubs mid-season in a bid to pull them out from danger of relegation, or to push a mid-table team for European qualification.

Classic mode adds various 'unlockable' features that can ease the difficulty of the game. Players can remove the need for work permits, for example, or add cash to their transfer budgets.

This is where Football Manager adds in a new microtransactions model, with players allowed to either earn the features or pay for them themselves.

"The introduction of Football Manager Classic is a major step forward in Football Manager's evolution," said Sports Interactive studio director Miles Jacobson.

"In recent years it's become clear that there's a large group of people who would like to play Football Manager, but simply can't devote the time required to get the most out of the game - in fact, now that they have families and other commitments, even some members of the SI team have found themselves in this position.

"We decided, therefore, to try to find a way to accommodate players with limited free time, without significantly diluting the experience. We believe that FMC achieves this beautifully.

"I would, however, like to stress to our many, many fans around the world that the introduction of FMC will not impact in any way on the game that they've come to know and love. For those who still want the full, 'hands-on' experience, FM13 offers exactly what they're looking for - a bigger, better and even more immersive version of the world's greatest football management simulation."

Game Information

Football Manager. Always.

Football Manager is the best-selling, most realistic football management series ever made. Football Manager 2013 celebrates 20 years of games from the people at Sports Interactive by introducing an array of new features.

This year’s version allows you to take control of any club in more than 50 nations across the world and includes all of Europe’s biggest leagues as well as database of over 500,000 real-world players and staff.

As well as some landmark new features in the Career Mode, there are now new ways to enjoy your Football Manager experience.

NEW TO CAREER MODE…

Match Engine
The 3D match engine has seen huge improvements this year. Everything on the pitch looks more realistic; from the stadiums, the players’ movement, intelligence, and the way the ball moves through the air.

We’ve also introduced hundreds of new animations to make the game feel more realistic and we’ve made the whole experience more televisual by introducing new camera angles and showing the kick-off and final whistle.

Manager Roles
Another notable difference is the significant restructure of the manager’s staff and a revamp of their roles. The most obvious is that we’ve introduced the position of Director of Football into the game for the first time, which will allow managers to pass on some of their workload, such as contract negotiations, if they choose to.

In addition to this, we’ve also increased the number of specialist coaching roles within the game and given the manager greater flexibility to choose which coaches offer advice and when. The manager can also choose to complain about boardroom interference – although that particular option should probably be used sparingly.

And much more…
A brand new training system, improved international management, tones in press conferences & a new user interface.

NEW WAYS TO PLAY…

Classic and Challenge Modes
Football Manager Classic is a less time-consuming way to enjoy Football Manager. The essence of the game is exactly the same – the manager still takes charge of a squad of players and competes at whatever level he or she chooses – but they will now find that a number of their responsibilities have either been taken over by their support staff or have disappeared completely.

For example, while the player still takes charge of training in FMC, this is carried out at a 'full team' level only – there's no individual player training. And when it gets to matches themselves, there are no team talks or opposition reports... you just go straight to a game using the same 3D match engine as Career Mode. The games are played out in a quicker 'highlights only' fashion, but you can even speed this up by going straight to ‘Instant Result’.

Players who opt for Football Manager Classic will also find that they have a couple of further options in terms of how they play the game; they can either play a full open-ended ‘Career’ or they can choose to play in the new ‘Challenge’ mode.

In Challenge mode they’ll find themselves in a particular situation which will test their management skills over a shorter game time – usually half a season. Can you win a trophy with a team consisting almost entirely of kids? Or could you guide your club to safety despite being bottom of the table at Xmas?

We first introduced Challenge Mode in Football Manager Handheld 2012 and it proved to be so popular that we’ve decided to include it in FMC too.

The game will come with four free-to-play challenges, each of which feeds in to a global leaderboard.

Network Play
The brand new Network Play is fully integrated with Steam’s network functionality which means that players should be able to set up and enjoy games against their friends far more easily than before. The Network Mode also allows people to set-up special one-off leagues and cups and to import their team from their career mode, so you can now end any debate about whose FM team is better.

The deeper integration with Steam will also allow us to manage worldwide leaderboards, so, for the first time you’ll really know how good a manager you are.

Plus over 900 other new features!

The 'Challenge' mode sounds like a good addition, will be interesting to see what sort of scenarios are on there

I'd rather they stopped adding all the features and instead improve the things there currently. Press conferences are brick and repetitive...there's many things that bother me.

The loan revamp and adding Director of Football sounds good though.

I'm interested in classic mode, the game has become too overstuffed past 5-6 years, and I lost interest in it. This might get me back playing season after season

So many things put me off playing FM these days.
Anyone that has played FML knows the huge flaws in the FM match engine, know exactly how it is exploitable and know that SI have made no effort in the last 3 years to improve it as its 'good enough'.
The morale system in FM is easily exploitable. You can easily manage your players to get them all with Superb morale regardless how they are playing. This would be fine but morale is completely overpowered.
SI way of making the game a bit harder for people like I you know it inside out was to introduce 'competition form'. A management game with an a huge deciding random factor over which you had no control.

Then every year SI keep adding in cosmetic feature after cosmetic feature.
SI now have a game that they even admit they don't play themselves any more.

Yeah, I'd like to play as a DOF. Buy the players, manage contracts, hire/fire a manager and coaching staff and sim games. Get through seasons pretty quickly.

Not much to do between transfer windows, except firing the manager.

Bought FM12 on iPad for 6.99 pretty good tbf. Always wanted to try a chairman version with complete control over finances/hiring and firing etc.

Would love a game where you could be a scout for a club. I think it might be boring ultimately but I think it could be a nice little add on to a game like FM. You scout opposition players and say what you think weaknesses the team could have against the upcoming team. Go abroad and scout players and report back after a few months etc.

Or just a coach where you report to your manager what you think would be the best thing to do against the next team etc. ending up becoming a manager.

Haha it just seems better than starting out as Spurs or a big club straight away, hardly realistic :p
